Think of how much better your life would be without neck and back pain, skin irritation and indentations from bra straps, and the self consciousness that can come from overly large breasts.

Women from Decatur, Champaign and Peoria, IL choose breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, to:

  • Reduce the size and weight of larger breasts
  • Increase breast firmness
  • Shrink the size of the areola (the darker skin around the nipple)

Breast reduction results in dramatically increased comfort and confidence, along with a more contoured and proportionate breast appearance. Women choose G. D. Castillo, MD for their breast reduction surgery because he is a leader in breast and body contouring procedures. Dr. Castillo has three decades of experience in private practice helping women look and feel their best through cosmetic plastic surgery procedures. See his results when you visit our photo gallery.

The Procedure

The goal of reduction mammoplasty is to reduce, re-contour and reshape the breasts. The breasts are made smaller, the nipple / areola is repositioned upward and the excess skin is removed. Dr. Castillo will attempt to make the breasts as identical as possible but patients should keep in mind that often some asymmetry remains. There are usually three incisions: one incision around the nipple, a vertical incision from the nipple to beneath the breast that remains visible for some time and an incision in the breast fold. Scarring will fade over time, and patients can choose to have IPL treatments to improve the appearance of post-surgical incisions.

Through the incisions, Dr. Castillo removes fat and glandular tissue and trims excess skin before repositioning the nipple to a higher place on the breast. In most cases, the nipple remains attached to the underlying vessels and nerves, so sensation can be preserved. Dr. Castillo can review the specifics of your procedure after he reviews your case during your consultation.

The breast reduction incision is closed by bringing together the skin below the nipple to create the smaller and elevated breast. Breast reduction procedures generally take three hours and are performed on an outpatient basis.

Another approach to breast reduction is liposuction in Champaign, IL. This technique can be used to reduce breast size, particularly in younger individuals who have not had their family yet and have aspirations of breast-feeding. A breast reduction by liposuction not only provides for a better chance of successfully breast-feeding but also allows the patient to reduce their breast size without scars. In addition, breast reduction by liposuction will result in an easier surgery / recovery process for those who are candidates for this procedure.

In some cases, breast reduction can be combined with other procedures like breast lift and tummy tuck in Bloomington, IL. Dr. Castillo will discuss your options for combining procedures during your consultation.

After Surgery

The initial recovery period following a breast reduction is quite brief. It is important to be patient and allow enough time for final healing and shaping of the breasts. There is some soreness after the operation but there is minimal pain. Generally, the patient may return to work four to seven days after surgery.

Dr. Castillo will provide a full description of the rare complications that can occur following breast reduction surgery during your initial consultation. Laser treatments are available to reduce the appearance of post-surgical scarring, though this is rarely needed.

Breast reduction is an operation that is enjoying increasing popularity. For the proper patient, the results are very gratifying. If you are considering breast reduction, you owe it to yourself to meet with a surgeon and learn all about the benefits this procedure has to offer.
