Ask Our Expert: What Is The Difference Between Liposuction & Liposculpture?

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

Q: What is the difference between liposuction and liposculpture?

A: Though both of these cosmetic surgeries are used for body contouring. Liposuction is a two dimensional cosmetic surgery, while liposculpture is a three dimensional cosmetic surgery. Liposuction and liposculpture can be used to contour any body shape, though we use it primarily for body contouring in individuals who are reasonably fit but have some problem areas.  Removal of fat in specific areas such as the love-handles, waist, thighs, back or arms allows the patient to feel more proportionate and confident in and out of their clothing.

Liposuction can also be used as a volume reduction tool.  We are able to remove up to two gallons of fat during this procedure.  The results of this procedure create an over-all slimmer, more proportionate body shape in an otherwise full-figured individual.

At Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Clinic in Savoy, G.D. Castillo, M.D. FACS performs liposuction or liposculpture  on both men and women from late teens to seniors. In most instances, patients are back to work in four to five days.

Did you know that Dr. Castillo is the Past-President of the American Society of Liposuction Surgery?  He is very proud of honor as he was nominated by his peers (other surgeons) across the nation to represent, lead and teach within the prestigious American Society of Liposuction Surgery.

Protecting Your Children From The Sun

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

Researchers estimate over ONE MILLION NEW CASES of skin cancer will be reports this year alone!

Did you know research has shown two or more sunburns during childhood significantly increases the chance of developing skin cancer during your child’s life time? By taking time to learn more about sun-safety, you will be able to teach your family safe-sun habits that will last them a lifetime. You could even save a life!

Invasive melanoma is malignant, often fatal form of skin cancer.

According to the research of Brooke Rutledge Seckel, M.D., Assistant Professor of Surgery, Harvard Medical School, in 1935, Americans had a 1 in 1,500 chance of developing invasive melanoma, by the 1980, the rate increased to 1 in 250 and 1 in 74 by 2001. That number is estimated to be 1 in every 50 Americans by 2010!

Sun rays are ionizing radiation, no different than the radiation of an atomic blast or a cobalt 60 therapy found in cancer treatment centers. The sun is the number one cause of skin cancer (melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma) in the United States. Even though most people who are diagnosed with skin cancer are adults, skin cancer affects children as well. The sun is also responsible for reducing immune responses and many long-lasting aging effects such as lines, wrinkles, loss of collagen & elasticity, brown spots, freckles & broken spider veins.

Using sun protection any time your child may be exposed to the sun is a must. It will prevent sun damage and reduce the risk of skin cancers and premature aging. Sunburns hurt. They can cause fever, swelling, blisters and pigmentation changes. Sunscreens are meant to be used as a source of protection, not as a reason to stay in the sun for a longer period of time.   Sunscreens are not just for those with pale skin who burn in the sun. Sun protection is a must no matter what color your skin is. Remember, tanned skin is damaged skin!

Later this week we will talk about sunblock and how Cosmetic Plastic Surgery can help you in the fight against sun damage.

Ask Our Expert: Why does Dr. Castillo still recommend liposculpture over newer treatments like Smart Lipo?

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

Ask Our Expert:

Q: Why does Dr. Castillo still recommend liposculpture over newer treatments like Smart Lipo?

A: At Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Clinic, Dr. Castillo investigated newer fat reduction treatments Smart Lipo, Ultrasonic Lipo and others you may have read about.  The simple truth is that we want the very best outcome for our patients.  We have chosen to stay with traditional tumescent liposculpture because it’s the only one that can be used for contouring in 3600, also known as tri-dimensional body sculpting.  Traditional liposculpture offers consistent, predictable, superior results.  Today there is simply no substitute for tumescent liposculpture for accurate results, speedy recovery, lack complications, and it is affordable.

Sometimes newer trends are not as effective.  They are just well marketed.  At this time, the newer fat reduction procedures DO NOT offer ANY advantages to our patients.  They only decrease safety and increase cost, two things we are not willing to compromise on just to keep up with the latest marketing fad.

Ask Our Expert – Stress Acne

Ask Our Expert:  Stress Acne

Q: The only time I seem to get acne is just before an important social event.  Could this really be happening or is it just my imagination?  Is there something I can do to prevent these embarrassing breakouts?

A:  The stress generated from preparing for a social event and wanting to look your best can have a large effect on your skin.  Increased stress can actually have a physical effect on your skin because stress increases the production of cortisol.  Cortisol is a stress hormone that can boost oil production.  Dead skin cells are then pulled into your pores causing acne to form. When your oil glands quickly become over-active, it can not only cause those embarrassing breakouts that you are referring to but often leaves skin looking dull and lifeless.

I would recommend scheduling an appointment at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center about a 7 – 10 before your next stressful event for a Vitalize Peel. For your convenience, Dr. Castillo offers this treatment at his Savoy (Champaign – Urbana) location.  The Vitalize Peel will eliminate much of the dead skin cells before they can be pulled down into pores when you experience that stress-hormone release. It will also leave your skin radiant and refreshed for your big event.  During this appointment we can also talk about  designing a medical grade skincare program around these issues.

No Interest/Low Interest Credit – Is It Right For You?

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

I was having fun opening my mail last night.  The first three envelopes were from different credit card companies, and each envelope contained four ready-to-use, pre-printed, “no-interest or low-interest” checks for my convenience.  Gee, it’s so easy – all I need do is sign my name.   I said to my husband, “look at this…unbelievable!  They’re throwing interest-free money at us again!”  He smiles and we spend a few moments joking about the phantom trips we’ll take, etc., but in all honesty, it hit home for me how great credit offers can turn dreams into nightmares if one doesn’t realize the steps to be taken to insure that good credit offers remain great.

We’ve all heard the expression “there’s no free lunch.” Usually a catch is attached to free offers, i.e., “hey, how about dinner and show on us,” (after you spend the next 4-5 hours of your vacation listening to a timeshare pitch)!  Well, in regard to credit offers the “catch” usually comes in the form of penalties and fees.  Credit companies are in business to make money and they cannot exist on profitless credit for everyone, thus it’s important to both read and understand the fine print.

If you never miss a payment deadline for the entire duration of the repayment process, these offers can be advantageous because you pay no or minimal interest while your savings continue to grow; otherwise, watch out!  That no-interest teaser can quickly become a steep retroactive 26.99% with additional $29.99 to $39.99 late payment fees per month if you don’t take the necessary steps to prevent it.   The good news is that penalties/fees are avoidable and good credit offers can be utilized to your advantage.

Simple suggestions to gleam the most from great credit offers while protecting yourself include:

  1. Pay off the entire balance as soon as you receive the bill.  You’ll gain the billing cycle interest free.  An obvious first choice, but not always practical.
  2. Set up an automatic electronic repayment debited from your checking or savings account. An electronic payment receipt from your bank eliminates any doubt that your creditor is receiving your payment on time and their fees or penalties do not apply to your account.  This also eliminates the possibility of your payment sitting in someone’s in-box and not posting or being lost in the mail prior to your payment deadline.
  3. Set up the electronic payment to be received at least 4 days prior to the actual due date. Paying 4 days early allows the extra time for due dates that occur over the weekend or land on a holiday.
  4. If you do not desire to pay your bills electronically, set up a “tickler” calendar specifically designed with flagged mailing dates to ensure your payment is received a day or so early.  For the best result, follow up this method with a call to your creditor to make sure your payment has been posted to your account prior to your due date.  If they say the check has not been received or posted, you have an opportunity to authorize an immediate phone payment in order to avoid penalties.

Today’s savvy consumer can reap the rewards of their great credit score with offers that are convenient and inexpensive.  We at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery and Skin Rejuvenation – Laser Institute in both Champaign-Urbana accept all major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express) including the no-interest and low-interest credit check offers that come to you in the mail.  We also offer multiple affordable financing options specifically designed for elective medical procedures, and tailored to the individual.
