Best Season For Your Cosmetic Surgery Procedure

Wednesday, December 7th, 2016

Many of Dr. G.D. Castillo’s patient’s in both his Champaign and Bloomington Cosmetic Surgery Practices will often ask if there is a better time of the year is to have the particular surgery they are considering. Truthfully, most surgeries can be performed anytime of the year but each season does lend itself to certain advantages. Hopefully this blog post will give you some points to consideration when finding the best time for you and your daily lifestyle.

FALL:

Fall is known to be a time for change. The leaves change, colors change, temperatures change, daylight hours change, so why not make some changes of your own?

There are many advantages to having surgery this time of year. The kids are back in school. Busy summer schedules and beach days have come to an end (at least here in the Midwest) and life is starting to get back into a more consistent routine after summer. The holidays are coming up and with a little planning you can have surgery and be healed with no remaining tell-tail signs all before your first holiday get-together.

lipo jeans to bigThere are also a few long holiday weekends like Columbus Day, and Thanksgiving. This is a good time to have body contouring with liposculpture or even neck liposcultpure. Breast augmentations, breast lifts or breast reductions, even mini-facelifts are possibilities over long weekends. It is usually cool enough to camouflage with an over-sized shirts, turtlenecks or scarves.

The only real disadvantage to having plastic surgery this time of year is that you are heading into the holiday season. It you have a lot of pre-holiday prep work or demands, than it might be more challenging.

WINTER:

Winter is typically a very popular time to have surgery and for good reason. It is generally a slower, more laid back time. You can extend time off from work by adding vacation days to the beginning or end of holiday time. For this reason, it’s an ideal time to have surgeries that take more than a long weekend to be presentable, like a facelift, forehead lift, eyelid surgery, fat transplantation or a rhinoplasty.

It is easier to hide out for a few days without friends and family getting suspicious of your absence. It’s a common time to be stuck at home with “the flu or a cold” for a few days and since no one wants your flu or a cold; they are likely to stay away 😉

Winter wardrobes make it easy to conceal post-surgical swelling and bruising of the face or body. Scarves, turtlenecks and cute winter hats make it easy to hide lady covered with scarfthe signs of a recent facelift or forehead lift. Big, comfy sweaters can hide slower movements just after breast surgeries, tummy-tucks and body contouring. Since you will need to avoid sun exposure after surgeries like laser resurfacing, winter is also the easiest time to stay out of the sun.

I cannot really think of any disadvantages of having surgery in the winter, though winter sometimes creates procrastination and before you know it, it’s spring and your suddenly in a time crunch to meet your surgical goals.

SPRING:

Spring is probably the most motivating season. It’s a very popular season for 4562 smallscheduling liposuction, tummy tucks, breast surgery and mommy-make-overs. Patients are looking ahead to late spring and summer and want to get their body in check before heading to the beach, going to class reunions, weddings, vacations, or just having less clothing to conceal their areas of concern. It is also a great time for those who couldn’t fit a facelift, brow lift, rhinoplasty into their winter schedule because you can still conceal with a big spring hat, scarf and sunglasses for the first few days if you have bruising or swelling to cover.

SUMMER:

Summer can be a more challenging time to have certain cosmetic surgery procedures, as it is more difficult to avoid sun exposure to lasered skin or new exposed incisions. If you are a gardener, a golfer or work outside, then summer may not be the best season to have laser surgery. Most surgeries will impinge on your summer activities, at least to some extent.

However, if your daily summer lifestyle doesn’t include spending lots of time summer-cute-hipster-beautyoutside and you are accustom to protecting your skin from the sun depending on your lifestyle, if you’re someone who already restricts the amount of sun exposure you get, or if you are willing restrict the time you spend outside for awhile, it can be a good option.

If you have kids at home, summer is a good time to send them off to grandmas or summer camp for a fun-filled week while you concentrate on your recovery. By the time they return, they will be none-the-wiser. Since most people are pretty busy during the summer months, it won’t be too suspicious if you disappear from your social scene for a week.

Procedures like breast augmentations, breast lifts, breast reductions, eyelid surgeries and tummy tucks are good summer surgery choices. If summer is not a good time for surgery but you want a more youthful look for all your summer events, consider Botox, dermal fillers, or facials and skincare to keep you looking fresh until fall.

I think James Taylor said it best when he sang “Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall…all you’ve got to do is call…”

Recovering from Breast Augmentation:

Monday, September 5th, 2016

One of the reasons Breast Augmentation is so popular, well, aside from the obvious “perks,” is that it is a pretty quick recovery. Our goal is to help you recover quickly and get you back to your busy life as soon as possible with a few simple tips:

Bras…To Wear or Not To Wear; This Is The Question!

On the day of your surgery you will return home in a comfy sports bra or wireless bra, pexels-photo-136409compliments of Dr. G.D. Castillo. Unless otherwise instructed, you will wear this bra continuously for the first three days then you can go without or use a wireless or sports bra of your choice until Dr. Castillo gives you the green light to begin wearing underwire bras (which by the way… you – will – no – longer – need!! Whoo hoo!)

NOTE: Because your body has to “make room” for the implants, the implants often sit higher than you expect for a few weeks until they are able sit properly in the pockets. You can help this along by going without a bra. That’s right! You just got a free pass to go without a bra! You can even claim “Doctor’s orders!” Oh the perks!

“I Like To Move It, Move It!”
pexels-photoIf you are a movie buff, you may remember the scene from the movie Madagascar; you know the one where the animals are all dancing and moving their arms to the song “I Like To Move It?” Well that might be a little too vigorous for your first few days after surgery, but you get the idea. No babying those muscles, move it, move it! While we do not want you to raise your hands above the leave of your head for the first week, you can really speed up your recovery and get rid of the soreness much more quickly by gently moving your arms around to keep those chest muscles from getting tighter.

What To Wear, What To Wear…

Buttons and zippers are your new BFF, at least for the first week anyway. I recommend arriving to surgery in a loose button up or zip up top. It doesn’t feel good to try to pull a tight pull over top over your head after surgery. You will want to avoid using pull over tops for about the first week. By the time you are released to raise your arms above the level of your head (6 days), you shouldn’t have any more wardrobe issues, except that your old tops may be fitting a bit tighter these days.

Massage:

Six days after your surgery, you will return to our office for your first post-op visit. You will receive instructions on how to begin massaging your breasts. They are going to be a little tender at first but don’t give up. This is the key to maintaining the free moving, perky, natural looking breasts.

Exercise:

If you are an exercise conscious individual, I realize this topic is an important one. Who wants to loose ground at the gym when you have this great new shape your ready show off! Exercise can really boost your physical and mental state and we want to get you back to the gym as soon as your body is ready. But… your pectoral muscles do need a little healing time first.

You can expect to ease back into our workouts with a schedule that looks something like this:

  • 1ST week – You will be asked to restrict exercise to light activity like walking and moving your arms as described above.
  • 2nd week – You are typically released to go to back to the gym and do most activities such as weight lifting and walking on an incline at 50% of your normal level. Still refrain from running, jogging, weight lifting that involves the pectoral muscles or other pectoral exercises.
  • 3rd week – Typically all restrictions will be lifted at this time. That being said, it may not feel too good when you first get back to running or jogging. I suggest doubling up and wearing two sports bras for the several weeks to give you the extra support you need and prevent too much breast movement.

Now that the hard part is over – making the decision to have breast augmentation, choosing the right surgeon, choosing your implant size, making surgical arrangements… it’s time for a little fun! I hope you enjoy all the perks!

What To Expect After Level III Traditional CO2 Laser Resurfacing

Friday, August 26th, 2016

Recovering from Level III CO2 Laser Resurfacing can be an exercise in patience and faith; but if you’re concerned by wrinkles, it can also be one of the most rewarding decisions you will make for yourself. Knowing what to expect in advance is key to having a more peaceful recovery.

Day 1-7

It’s start with most prominent question first –

WILL I BE IN PAIN AFTER MY SURGERY???

This surgery is not particularly “painful.” You will experience a sunburn sensation that comes and goes over the first few days and your skin will be tender to touch. You can expect some swelling as well. With in 7 days, these sensitivities should be resolved.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING THE FIRST 7 DAYS OF MY RECOVERY?

Once your surgery is complete, you will spend about 1/1/2 hours in the recovery room with your personal recovery staff member (that’s me). You will find yourself in a very comfortable recliner with warm air system to keep you cozy. We will go over your at-home instructions in detail with you and your caregiver and answer any questions you may have.

You will leave Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center in a facial bandage with opening for your eyes, nose and mouth. You will be sent home with a special post-laser ointment. You will apply this ointment to any areas where your skin is not covered by your bandage such as around the lips, nose and eyelids.

24 hours after your surgery you will return to our office to have your bandages removed. We will apply an ointment to your skin and apply a new bandage for another 24 hours.

48 hours after your surgery, you will return to our office for the second post op visit. At this visit Dr. Castillo will remove your bandage permanently. Now that your bandage is off, your main job at home is to keep your skin covered with a special post-laser ointment for the next 5-6 days and of course to avoid ALL sun exposure. We will review your post op instructions again and answer any questions you or your family may have. And remember we are always here if you have a question.

On day 6 or 7, you will return to our office for your third post-op visit. You will be healed at this point but your skin will still be red or pink. But that’s okay… Get ready to fell like a new person!! It’s camouflage day!!!DSC_0465
After visiting with Dr. Castillo, you will be escorted back to our skincare suite – the fun room!!   Here you will meet with me, the skincare and laser specialist at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center. This is an important step in feeling more like yourself! It’s tough hiding out for a week but by the time you leave the office today you will be ready for a lunch date! You will be amazed at how easy it can be to cover any signs of redness with the proper cosmetics and technique. Don’t worry; we will get you set up with everything you need to look fabulous at your next social event!

DSC_0568During this camouflage appointment, you also learn how to prevent future sun damage and how to properly maintain your new radiant, smooth skin in the short term and in the long term. It will be imperative that you avoid sun exposure for the next 6 months, as your skin will be very sun sensitive. This means we recommend you always use a wide-brim hat, UV protective sunglasses and apply Castillo MD Skin Science Prime Defense or Sun Defense sunscreen when going outside or traveling in your vehicle. When applying sunscreen, apply one layer, let it dry, then apply an additional layer before going out.

HOW WILL I CARE FOR MY SKIN AT HOME?

Day 7-15:

  1. MORNING –
  • Moisturize: Remove any Elta, Aquaphor or Bacitracin remaining on your skin from the night before.
  • Apply Calmative Cream by CastilloCalmative Cream MD Skin Science. This product is a moisturizer. You will need to re-apply it to the lasered areas a few times during the day to avoid getting dry.
  • Protect: Before going outside or traveling in your vehicle, apply Prime Defense or Sun Defense Sunscreen, let it dry for 3 minutes, then apply an additional layer.

You will need to re-apply every 2 hours if outside or traveling. You will need to apply every 80 minutes if sweating or if your skin becomes wet.

  1. NIGHT-
  • Cleanse: Apply Gentle Cleanser to damp skin with your fingers. Then wet your sponge and cleanse in a circular motion, removing any dead skin or yellow/green exudate. Rinse, and pat dry.
  • Moisturize: Apply the ointment Dr. Castillo has selected for you, (Elta, Bacitracin, or Aquaphor) to the lasered areas.

When you are ready, generally within 3-5 weeks, I recommend scheduling a skincare check up with me. This allows us to customize your daily skincare routine to your specific skin needs. From here on out, simple maintenance is key!

Level III Traditional CO2 Laser Resurfacing

Friday, August 5th, 2016

I once read that “wrinkles are the road map of one’s life,” but who wants a road map when you can have a GPS! In the field of cosmetic surgery, we would consider traditional CO2 Laser Resurfacing the “GPS” of wrinkle solutions, providing a sleek, modern alternative to a wrinkly road map.

While Dr. Castillo offers 3 different levels of CO2 Laser Resurfacing, Level III Traditional CO2 Laser Resurfacing definitely offers the most dramatic anti-aging results available. This procedure is considered to be a surgical procedure and is performed under general anesthesia. Dr. Castillo has performed thousands of these very effective procedures in his fully-accredited outpatient surgical facility. If you are looking for the best results possible for moderate to severe skin damage, you may want to learn more about this magn4920ificent treatment option.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR LEVEL III TRADITIONAL LASER RESURFACING?

Ideal candidates for this procedure are men and women with advanced symptoms of aging,
skin damage or acne scarring. I am referring to moderate to severe lines, wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, rough texture, brown spots, facial redness, spider veins, enlarged pores, skin laxity, loss of collagen, and acne scars. Their schedule will need to allow for week of down time before returning to work or social events.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

This is a one-time laser procedure. Of course, sadly, it cannot keep you from getting sun damage in the future. That part is up to you. But that being said, we are always here to guide you and educate you on ways to slow the signs of aging and protect your new, flawless skin from the sun.

Fill Your Wrinkles

Wednesday, July 13th, 2016

Most of us grow up understanding that wrinkles are just part of life – at least until it happens to us. Youth has this way of making us feel energetic and invincible, like we can conquer the world. That’s pretty hard to give up. It seems only natural that looking our best makes us feel our best, and feeling our best encourages us to keep conquering whatever comes our way.

Assuming you are one of the millions, NOT welcoming wrinkles with open arms, then you’re probably looking for a few good options for your aging arsenal.

There are many viable surgical and non-surgical wrinkle smoothing solutions that can have you back to daily life asap.  These include anything from Botox to laser resurfacing or a facelift. Sometimes dermal fillers such as Restylane Lift, Restylane Silk, Juvaderm or Radiesse can be a good solution to combat those are earlier stages of aging.

So what causes those pesky wrinkles anyway?

  1. As we get older, we experience a breakdown in collagen and elastin in our skin. We begin to notice appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and textural changes. Of course, this can happen even sooner if you’ve live the life of a sun bunny. UV exposure is the number one culprit for pre-mature aging.4982
  1. As we age, we can loose some subcutaneous fat under the skin. Subcutaneous fat provides the volume needed to maintain a youthful appearance. (Think of dropping a wrinkled raisin into a glass of water, the water plumps the raisin, restoring its volume). This loss of volume creates loose skin, which results in sagging, wrinkles and eventually the desire to seek help from Dr. G.D. Castillo. You may begin to notice nasolabial folds or parentheses from the nose to the mouth, lip lines, marionette lines, sunken in lower lids and disappearing cheek prominence.
  1. As if reasons #1 & #2 weren’t enough of a blow to an aging ego, they are typically followed by the loss of boney structures and underlying tissue support. The loss of boney structure and tissue support creates more sagging and more wrinkling. As this occurs, skin moves downward with the help of gravity like that of a deflated balloon or wilting flower.

How can a dermal filler help improve unwanted facial aging?

Today, dermal fillers are not just used to give you a perfectly pouty lip, fillers can actually provide nice improvements to a mild to moderately aging face. They work by filling in lines and wrinkles and by providing much needed volume. Dermal fillers fill in lines around the mouth, or other areas of the face to create a smoother appearance. They plump up sunken in areas such as the lower eyelids, nasolabial folds and can restore or create a beautifully prominent cheek.

When patients first begin to notice

Create balance with dermal fillers. Lasts upto 18 months.

the signs of aging, they are often looking for a subtle change before they work their way up to a more dramatic change like facial surgery as the signs of aging progress. Some patients find dermal fillers to be an attractive choice because they can do it on a Friday and return to work on a Monday with no one being the wiser.

It is important to recognize that most people who are concerned about unwanted signs of aging will only benefit from fillers for a period of time. Fillers cannot take the place of having facial plastic surgery nor can they give you surgical results. They can only put a band aide on aging for a period of time. That being said, band aides are sometimes desirable. They can be a quick fix to mild lines and wrinkles, until the time is right for procedures like a facelift, a neck lift, or CO2 Laser Resurfacing.

The Characteristics of Beautiful Skin

Thursday, May 5th, 2016

While sitting in a small room in a Champaign office recently, I over-heard an elated young lady boasting about the beautiful diamond she received over the holiday. Her gushing excitement was infectious. I found myself feeling almost as excited as she, yet I couldn’t even see the diamond!

I then began to wonder “what it is that makes diamonds or other precious gems for that matter generate that type of admiration.” I would guess most of us regard diamonds as a thing of beauty… but why? What specifically is it that makes girls go gaga over diamonds? Is it the number of carats? Could it be the shape of the stone that is so enchanting?

To me, it is the clarity and color of the stone. I would much prefer a petite diamond with such superior color and clarity that it shimmers and dances in the light, allowing me can see every curve and every contour, to a cloudy, three carat diamond that lacks life and luster. Would you agree? Now, don’t get me wrong. I am absolutely a fan of big rocks. I’m not trying to fool anyone here. Size does matter! It just falls short without superior color and clarity.

So why am I even talking about diamonds in a skincare blog?

Well, the characteristics that make a diamond sparkle and radiate beauty are very similar to the characteristics of beautiful skin. I mean is there anyone out there who would not be flattered to have their skin compared to a radiant, flawless diamond? Just as clarity and color are mandatory characteristics of a beautiful diamond, clarity and color are also key factors in creating beautiful skin.

Achieving superior skin color means that your skin is free of brown spots, freckles, redness, broken vessels and melasma. Skin clarity refers to skin that is free of rough texture, flakes, dull skin, large pores, acne, keratoses and moles. Superior color and clarity can be achieved through treatments such as traditional CO2 Full Face Laser Resurfacing , CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing, IPL, medical grade bleaching agents such as Castillo MD Skin Science Skin Lightening Complex, medical microdermabrasion, chemical peels and medical grade skincare products.

I would say that most people who are bothered by facial aging are focused on wrinkles. When they look in the mirror, they see an aging face with a custom set of lines and wrinkles that have formed after years of abuse, mainly by sun exposure, and other factors. However, most often, removing wrinkles is only half the battle. It is the brown spots, broken vessels, rough texture and dull, flaking skin that create a less youthful appearance.

The concept of color and clarity is an important concept to understand. One must realize that if you treat only the lines and wrinkles of an aging face whether it be though a facelift, forehead lift, fat grafting, Botox or dermal filler such as Restylane Silk,  you are likely to find yourself feeling more like cubic zirconium than the real thing.

Here’s to wishing you the kind of admiration only superior color and clarity can generate.

Bra Shopping After Breast Augmentation:

Thursday, April 21st, 2016

Ask Our Expert:

Question:  When can I go bra shopping?

Roxanne: This is a great question and actually one of first things Dr. Castillo’s breast augmentation patients want to do after breast surgery! Honestly, I’ve even had patients who want to the mall straight from the recovery room! (Just to be clear, this… is definitely NOT recommended!)

As I am often referred to as a “Professional Shopper”  I can absolutely relate to how anxious you are to rush out and load up on the cutest / sexiest/prettiest bras you can find. Who could blame you for wanting to showcase your beautiful new breasts? BUT… here is the thing… you really need to wait for 6-8 weeks to break the bra bank.CPS Blog Photo 4578

Your final breast augmentation https://www.cosmeticplasticsurgery.com/cosmetic-surgery/breast-enlargement.cfm results will take time because there are a few things that need to happen first. Your breasts are going to go through a few stages and changes before they settle on their final shape / position. These changes will effect how your bras fit and ultimately, how you feel in them.

While most of your swelling will be gone within the first 10-14 days after your breast surgery, you will have a bit of residual swelling that will need to resolve over time. At first, your breast implants may also sit a little higher than you expected. This is because the chest muscles need to make room for the implant. Once there is more room in the pocket, your implants will assume their intended position, and then… look out Vicki SecretsCPS Blog Photo 5075, there’s a girl on a mission!

So what’s a girl to do in the mean time?

You will wake up from surgery already wearing a comfortable sports bra, compliments of Dr. Castillo https://www.cosmeticplasticsurgery.com/cosmetic-plastic-surgery/ and Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center. With in 3-7 days, you will be able to go braless, wear a wireless bra or preferably a sports bra. My best advice is to harness our inner-restraints and buy just one or two sports or wireless bras to get you by until Dr. Castillo lets you know the time to go shopping has finally come!  Then grab a girlfriend and make a day of it. You deserve it after exercising all that re-straint!

Happy shopping!
