On one hand, I can’t get enough of it. I wear lip color in some form every single day; lipstick , lip crayons, lip liners, lip gloss, lip tint…I’ve even been known to throw a little cream blush on my lips now and then if the color is right.

The right shade of lipstick can totally change my mood within the second it takes to put it on. Doesn’t it just make you feel…like a girl?  Of course on the other hand, there have been times when lipstick has just plain done me wrong!

Ever catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror to find that your once perfect lipstick application has left you looking like you just stepped off the crazy circus train? I hope you have girlfriends like mine who love you enough to tell you straight away!

In the words of Madeline Albright, “There is a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women.” So in the spirit of Madeline, here are a few quick and easy solutions for some common lipstick problems:

PROBLEM #1 – Cakey looking lipstick:

 SOLUTION:

  • The rules of applying lipstick are no different than applying a foundation to your face; you have to start with a smooth canvas. Exfoliate your lips. This will create a smooth surface to apply your lipstick. Then follow with a good lip hydrator. Just like any other skin surface…it’s pretty impossible to make dry, flakey skin look flattering.

PROBLEM #2 – Lipstick bleed:

SOLUTIONS:

  • For a quick no fuss solution, try using a lip crayon, preferably in matte rather than gloss. I find them to have more staying power due to their thicker consistency and more intense pigment. I like the Suede Matte Lip Crayons by Glo Minerals. They offer colors and intensities for every mood and their staying power is remarkable.
  • Apply a make-up primer to your lips before applying your lipstick. This will increase the time your lip color will stay put and fill in any lines for a smooth appearance.
  • Apply a concealer around the perimeter of your lips using a small concealer brush. The concealer will act as a bleed barrier to hold your lipstick in place.
  • Before apply your lipstick or lip crayon, fill in your entire lip with a lip liner of similar color. As a side bar here, there a few modern guidelines for lip liners…
  1. Lining the perimeter of your lips with a dark liner, then using a light lipstick to fill was socially exiled a few decades back…so…stay strong and resist the temptation.
  2. If you are old enough to wear lipstick, you old enough to color within the lines. If it is larger lips you desire, try a lip plumper or visit your local cosmetic plastic surgeons office to discuss dermal filler options  (exiting my soapbox now…and going back to our regularly scheduled program.)
  • My favorite trick… just a touch of translucent power. After you apply the lip color of your choice, place s single ply layer of tissue over your lips. Using a powder brush, dust just a touch of silica based translucent powder over the tissue. This will set your lipstick for an all-day stay!

PROBLEM #3: Lipstick on your teeth: Uhggg!

SOLUTIONS:

This post wouldn’t be complete without addressing this one. Who hasn’t had lipstick on their teeth? I know I have. Just ask my daughters. I have countless memories of them making desperate hand motions indicating another embarrassing lipstick on my teeth episode! Years back I read a great tip somewhere that I will pass to you. It is a simple, no-cost, product-free solution. All you need is your index finger and moment of privacy. Just after you apply your lipstick, make an “O” shape with your mouth. Stick your pre-cleaned J index finger in your mouth. Close your lips around your finger and pull your finger out. Wha-la, all the excess lipstick is now on your finger and not on your teeth!

Don’t forget to smile!

LOVE YOUR BODY NOW

LOVE YOUR BODY!

Body bulges can create such a frustration, even for most dedicated gym rats. While body bulges may appear as a result of too much eating mixed with too little exercise, it’s not the only reason for fatty bulges. Sometimes, it is simply the body you were born with. Some bodies, even when at a “normal” weight, with good diet and exercise habits, do not change easily and being disproportionate can be a constant struggle, affecting ones self-image.

I have performed thousands of liposuction /  liposculpture procedures in my Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center in Champaign, through out my career as 4523a Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon. I have seen countless cases of men and women who struggle with bulges whether they are over weight or under weight. If you where born as an apple or pear shape and you fight constantly to maintain or obtain the body shape you want; if fat bulges of the hips, knees, buttock, or thighs etc. are related to lack of proportion, there is a successful, predictable solution at hand.

CPS Blog Photo Nude body5007Traditional liposcultpure is the best solution for contouring your body into a shape that is pleasing to you, leaving you looking and feeling fabulous in any outfit! Suctioning a significant amount fat cells from the appropriate areas can have a magical effect, creating slender, graceful and vivacious female contour or a lean, fit and muscular male form. It is safely performed under general anesthesia in my Joint Commission accredited out-patient surgical facility, with a four day recovery.

There are so many terms used to describe options of fat removal today that it is sometimes difficult to keep them all straight.   Media loves to romanticize new fad techiques like Cool Sculpting or Smart Lipo for example so don’t let them woo you! Just because they are new, does not mean they provide the best or safest long-term solution void of issues.

I believe that traditional liposculpture offers my patients best results. It is a modern and proven technique that in the hands of an experienced, board-certified cosmetic surgeon offers long-term, predictable, smooth results with thousands of ecstatic patients who now love their body

Preparing For Your Breast Augmentation

Thursday, January 28th, 2016

Preparing for your Breast Augmentation:

4309

Whether you have already scheduled your breast augmentation at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center or are just thinking about enhancing the size and shape of your breasts, here are a few things you should know about preparing for your surgery.

Personal Arrangements to consider:

  • You will need to arrange for a friend or family member to drive you to and from surgery.
  • Arrange for a responsible adult to stay with you for the first 24 hours.
  • Arrange child care for the first day if needed.
  • Fill any prescriptions prior to your surgery day.
  • If you are coming from a distance and want to stay over night in a hotel, Dr. Castillo has an arrangement with a local Hotel (I-Hotel) that offers a special package including transportation to and from the office from the hotel, dinner and breakfast for you an your care giver and accommodations. Our staff will be happy to assist in those arrangements.

10 days before surgery:

Now is the time to discontinue taking all NSAID medications including aspirin, Ibuprophen, Aleve, Motrin, along with fish oil and Vitamin E. This needs to be done 10 days prior to your surgery. These are all blood thinners and can create unwanted bleeding. If you are unsure if a medication or vitamin supplement contains any of these ingredients just make a simple phone call our office or your pharmacist for clarification.

Pre-Op Visit 7-10 days before breast augmentation surgery:

You will come for a pre-operative visit about 7-10 days prior to your surgery. Dr. Castillo will draw some lab work, perform a brief history and physical and take your before and after photos. You will be given any needed prescriptions duSS Pre-OP exam copy2ring this visit so that you will have time to fill them prior to your surgery and you will be given plenty of time to ask any final questions.

3 days prior to breast surgery:

It is time to begin using the Betadine skin cleanser you received at your pre-op visit. You will use this cleanser once each day and again the morning of surgery to cleanse from your neck down to your belly button just as you would use your regular body cleanser. Then rinse it off. Don’t worry, though this is a Betadine product, it will not stain your skin.

One day before your breast surgery:

It is time to begin taking the antibiotic you received at your pre-op visit. You will take a total of four capsules today, one at breakfast, lunch, dinner and bedtime. You will not be able to eat or drink after midnight so have a nice, relaxing dinner and plan for a peaceful, stress-free evening.

Please remove any fingernail polish (from at least one finger and toe) as it can interfere with our monitor.

Surgery Day:

Today is a big day for you so it’s normal to be a little nervous and excited all at the same time. Just remember that you are in very experienced hands and within in a few short hours you will be recovering in the comforts of your own home.

Remember not to eat or drink anything, including water, the day of your surgery. The only exception to this of course is your antibiotic. You will need to take one more antibiotic before leaving you home with a small sip of water. If you take other daily medications, Dr. Castillo will let you know at your pre-op visit if you are to take those medications before arriving for surgery as well.

You will need one last shower using the Betadine skin cleanser before arriving for surgery. Do not apply body lotion or oils, as it will interfere with our monitor leads. We also ask that you arrive to surgery free of all make-up and jewelry.

Your driver is welcome to wait in the lobby or they may leave a phone number with our staff and we can call them when you are in the recovery room.

What to wear the morning of surgery:

Planning this ahead of time is more important than you might think. Wear loose comfortable clothing that is easy to slip on and off. Buttons and zippers are definitely your friend and will be over the next week! Avoid pull-over tops as it may be quite uncomfortable for you to raise your arms high enough to get your shirt on and Dr. Castillo will ask that you do not raise you hands above your head for the first week after surgery. Select a pair of shoes that do not have a heel. The affects of anesthesia can make it tricky to walk in heels without injuring yourself.

Don’t worry about bringing a bra to fit your enhanced breasts. We have taken care of that for you!

When you arrive at the office, we will collect a urine specimen for our standard pre-surgical pregnancy test. Once your surgery is completed you will rest comfortably in our recovery room for about 1 ½ hours with your own personal staff member to care for all of your needs. You will then be released to go home with a full set of post-care instructions. Once you are home, you will be able to eat and drink and will finish out the rest of your antibiotics.

Rest at home on the day of surgery but you can get up as move around as tolerated. You can even take a peek at new and improved breasts!

Facial Plastic Surgery IS the new BLACK.

Friday, January 15th, 2016

ORANGE  isn’t the new BLACK  this season!  It looks like Facial Plastic Surgery IS the new BLACK in 2016.

2015 and heading into early 2016, facial plastic surgery has gained a tremendous popularity; what’s more, it seems to be a very open topic. Patients, especially women aren’t hiding anymore. Even in Dr. Castillo’s mid-west conservative Cosmetic Plastic Surgery practice, it seems to me that “don’t ask, don’t tell” has changed to “hey, I just told my girlfriend about my facial plastic surgery experience and she will be in your office next week for a consultation.” Over the past year, facelifts https://www.cosmeticplasticsurgery.com/cosmetic-surgery/face-lift.cfm have become our most popular surgery. We are currently doing more facial plastic surgery than breast augmentations!

So why has facial plastic surgery become the hot ticket, mainstream item of today? Why is facial plastic surgery more acceptable in 2015-2016 then in the past? Why are more patients willing to share the very information we as Cosmetic Plastic Surgery professionals go to great lengths to keep confidential for them? So confidential in fact, that in the high-tech year of 2016, we still use only paper charts. We do not keep any patient records online as other healthcare facilities do today.

Well, I’m not a behavioral expert, so I can only speculate… Of course, there is the idea that baby-boomers make the largest segment of the population and they fall within the age category for most face lifts, but I think that is only a small part of the equation as the baby-boomer factor has been relative for years and this seems to be a new phenomenon.

I think that women are more empowered today than they were even 10-15 years ago. They hold high-powered positions in the work place, they are now often the bread-winner, and are more regarded as equals then ever before.   I think this has given many women the voice to openly discuss and go after what they want and need to improve their quality of life. They have gotten a taste of what a self-improvement can do for their quality of life whether it be obtaining a personal exercise coach, dental work, hair color or a face lift. Instead of trying to hide their decisions, they are now speaking out to say “I love my results and I’m so happy I did this for myself!” They want to share their personal joy and are willing to let their friends in on their secret so they too can reap the rewards of self-improvement.

We also have to consider the power of media. Plastic surgeons are being interviewed and quoted in top magazines regularly, discussing the latest advances in procedures and techniques. Celebrities are more open about having cosmetic procedures. There are multiple TV shows about cosmetic surgery (though some a little unrealistic for my taste) that take the viewer through the journey.

Caitlyn Jenner, although not your typical plastic surgery case, has brought much attention to cosmetic surgery and the changes that can be accomplished to help one meet their goals. All of these things make it more relative to the average person just wanting to look and feel their best. It show’s us that there are numerous surgical and non-surgical options and we can have some say on how we age and how we take care of our body, our health, our skin; our over-all appearance.

Dr. Castillo’s patient’s appreciate the natural, “less-obvious,” well-rested, youthful look that he has built his reputation on. Patients often tell me that they are so amazed that no one has figured out that they had facial surgery (that’s the sign off really good surgery by the way!). There friends just notice how great or well-rested they look. Most just assume they got a new hair cut or a new mattress. Recently, I have had several patients share with me the idea that they had no intension of telling anyone about their surgery or skin rejuvenation procedure, but after surgery, they found themselves so happy with their decision and results and have gained so much self-assurance that are now confidence enough to share their story with their friends and say “yes, I had a facelift and if your interested, I’ll be happy to give you the name of my surgeon.”
