My Airbrush Tanning Experience

Tuesday, July 11th, 2017

Unless you’ve been avoiding television, magazines, newspapers and social media for the last decade, I think it’s safe to say you’ve heard that UV radiation from both sun exposure and tanning beds are known to cause pre-mature skin aging, skin cancer, even death.

Tanning beds are known carcinogens!

The three things that skincare patients will always here from me are:

  1. “If you do nothing else for yourself or for the health and beauty of your skin; wear medical grade, physical sunscreen every single day, 365 days a year, for the rest of your life.
  2. Re-apply your sunscreen often and generously.
  3. Avoid sun exposure whenever possible.”

If you’ve spent anytime in consultation with me at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center, then you know I am a proponent for healthy skin. I spend my days helping others turn their sun-damaged skin into a smooth, clear, healthy canvas featuring their natural skin tone, free of pigmentation with a high level of light reflectivity and smooth texture.

Signs of sun damaged skin: brown spots, lines, wrinkles, sagging, dullness, rough texture

UV radiation from both tanning beds and the sun will rob that natural beauty by leaving it’s unflattering signature behind in the form of unwanted pigmentation or brown spots, lines, wrinkles, sagging, broken vessels, facial redness, rough texture and sometimes cancerous skin lesions. These signs may not show up right away but if you are not protecting your skin, they will catch you off guard at some point, no matter your skin type.

Through the use of Castillo MD Skin Science skincare products, sun protection and in-office skin rejuvenation treatments, our patients are seeing for themselves that well cared-for, clear, even toned, smooth, radiant skin can be more beautiful than tanned skin and is worth protecting!

If you are one of those people who think tanned skin is more attractive than natural-toned skin, a spray tan is a way to accomplish that look without putting your skin’s health at risk. Many past sun worshipers are now searching for alternative ways to appear sun-kissed when they have a special event coming up. They frequently ask for recommendations for self-tanners or spray tans for upcoming weddings, vacations, and class reunions.

I decided to investigate to options of self-tanners on the market and spray tans available in our area. Truthfully, once I researched the self-tanners for at home use, I couldn’t bring myself to try them. It seemed WAY too complicated with lots of opportunity for error considering my inexperience! I didn’t want to risk being blotchy or streaked, or umpa-lumpa orange.

That left spray tan booths and airbrushed spray tans to consider. In recalling my single experience with a spray tan booth about 15 years ago, I was reminded why I never opted for another spray tan. I was in a spray booth, cold, naked and alone without professional direction. It is impossible to hold your breath the whole time, so breathing in some of the solution is unavoidable, unless maybe you’re a fish. As I gasped for a quick breath, I got a mouth full of spray tan solution! Not good! My “tan” was blotchy in areas, which may have been a result of improper exfoliation in certain areas were my skin was drier (between fingers, ankles, the underside of my writs) but also on my lower legs which was not expected :-(. So… I ruled out volunteering for a duplicate of that experience, even though I realize it’s quite possible booths have improved over the years.

Airbrush tan it is then! I spoke in depth with Kristen, the owned of Body Bronze in Champaign. I decided to try a professional airbrush spray tan instead. I liked that the spray is controlled by a technician, similar to being spray-painted. They can give you direction along the way, “turn this way, hold your breath, breath now…” which put my worries to ease. I did not ingest any mist.

The rooms were equipped with ventilation systems to remove the mist immediately. Kristen explained that their FDA-approved solutions are all gluten-free, paraben-free and non-comedogenic and come in different shades to meet the needs of each individual. Together we determined that the sun-kissed to light, quick dry application would best meet my goals.

It was a quick, easy, process, a little chilly. I was given a specific time to shower (which you will definitely want to factor in before making your appointment!) and away I went. I felt a little sticky afterwards and was alarmed (though Kristen warned me) by how dark I appeared as the solution was setting. She assured me that when I showered, the dark color would rinse off and it did. By morning, I had a nice, even sun-kissed glow just in time to catch my plane for Hawaii.

I was concerned about whether or not the tan would fade evenly as I would be on vacation for 10 days. Kristen recommended I take a small bottle of Body Blendz Touch-Up spray with me just in case. My tan faded quite evenly so I did not need to use it. However, it’s nice to know there is a touch-up spray available.

While I remain a firm believer that well cared for, protected, original skin tones (color) are most beautiful, it was fun to change things up and experience a sun-kissed glow for a few days.

Stay tuned to my blog as I will share the lessons I have learned during my adventure with spray tanning and discuss the things you should know before your next fake bake.

Post-Abdominoplasty: A Case Of The Missing Navel!

Friday, February 3rd, 2017

While all cosmetic or plastic surgeons have their own style and artist preferences, there is certain criteria that needs to be met to say you have delivered a good surgical result for your patient. We have been seeing a very strange occurrence in our office lately, one that I believe warrants discussing.

Over the past 1 ½ -2 years, Dr. Castillo has seen a number of individuals who are seeking a second opinion on their tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), which they had done elsewhere. These patients share that they are unhappy with the results. “Something just doesn’t look right,” they say. While they may not know exactly what they are unhappy with, they KNOW something isn’t as expected.”

With one professional peek at their tummy, it’s shockingly obvious. They are missing the “crown jewel” of any good tummy tuck – the navel!! We have also seen a few patients with poorly re-constructed, misshapen or poorly placed umbilicus as well. Either way, it would make it difficult for a person to feel good about the new look of their tummy.

The navel (umbilicus) is the focal point of any abdomen. It is the single most important anatomical component and without one, an abdomen can look like something straight out of Alien! Acute attention to the details of placement, size, shape and depth are paramount in the final appearance of an abdomen. That deserves repeating…. Acute attention to the details of placement, size, shape and depth are paramount in the final appearance of an abdomen. The navel immediately reveals the age of an individual by the location, shape and size of it. Compare your current navel to that of a picture of your navel as a teen. You are likely to notice some changes.

So my best advice to anyone considering a tummy tuck is ask lots of questions about what you are getting and what your surgeon’s vision of a proper abdominoplasty is. Look closely at his before and after photos. Carefully examine at the position, shape, size, depth and proportion of the navels he has created. This is not the time ignore the proverbial “elephant in the room.” Demand a proper navel!

Best Season For Your Cosmetic Surgery Procedure

Wednesday, December 7th, 2016

Many of Dr. G.D. Castillo’s patient’s in both his Champaign and Bloomington Cosmetic Surgery Practices will often ask if there is a better time of the year is to have the particular surgery they are considering. Truthfully, most surgeries can be performed anytime of the year but each season does lend itself to certain advantages. Hopefully this blog post will give you some points to consideration when finding the best time for you and your daily lifestyle.

FALL:

Fall is known to be a time for change. The leaves change, colors change, temperatures change, daylight hours change, so why not make some changes of your own?

There are many advantages to having surgery this time of year. The kids are back in school. Busy summer schedules and beach days have come to an end (at least here in the Midwest) and life is starting to get back into a more consistent routine after summer. The holidays are coming up and with a little planning you can have surgery and be healed with no remaining tell-tail signs all before your first holiday get-together.

lipo jeans to bigThere are also a few long holiday weekends like Columbus Day, and Thanksgiving. This is a good time to have body contouring with liposculpture or even neck liposcultpure. Breast augmentations, breast lifts or breast reductions, even mini-facelifts are possibilities over long weekends. It is usually cool enough to camouflage with an over-sized shirts, turtlenecks or scarves.

The only real disadvantage to having plastic surgery this time of year is that you are heading into the holiday season. It you have a lot of pre-holiday prep work or demands, than it might be more challenging.

WINTER:

Winter is typically a very popular time to have surgery and for good reason. It is generally a slower, more laid back time. You can extend time off from work by adding vacation days to the beginning or end of holiday time. For this reason, it’s an ideal time to have surgeries that take more than a long weekend to be presentable, like a facelift, forehead lift, eyelid surgery, fat transplantation or a rhinoplasty.

It is easier to hide out for a few days without friends and family getting suspicious of your absence. It’s a common time to be stuck at home with “the flu or a cold” for a few days and since no one wants your flu or a cold; they are likely to stay away 😉

Winter wardrobes make it easy to conceal post-surgical swelling and bruising of the face or body. Scarves, turtlenecks and cute winter hats make it easy to hide lady covered with scarfthe signs of a recent facelift or forehead lift. Big, comfy sweaters can hide slower movements just after breast surgeries, tummy-tucks and body contouring. Since you will need to avoid sun exposure after surgeries like laser resurfacing, winter is also the easiest time to stay out of the sun.

I cannot really think of any disadvantages of having surgery in the winter, though winter sometimes creates procrastination and before you know it, it’s spring and your suddenly in a time crunch to meet your surgical goals.

SPRING:

Spring is probably the most motivating season. It’s a very popular season for 4562 smallscheduling liposuction, tummy tucks, breast surgery and mommy-make-overs. Patients are looking ahead to late spring and summer and want to get their body in check before heading to the beach, going to class reunions, weddings, vacations, or just having less clothing to conceal their areas of concern. It is also a great time for those who couldn’t fit a facelift, brow lift, rhinoplasty into their winter schedule because you can still conceal with a big spring hat, scarf and sunglasses for the first few days if you have bruising or swelling to cover.

SUMMER:

Summer can be a more challenging time to have certain cosmetic surgery procedures, as it is more difficult to avoid sun exposure to lasered skin or new exposed incisions. If you are a gardener, a golfer or work outside, then summer may not be the best season to have laser surgery. Most surgeries will impinge on your summer activities, at least to some extent.

However, if your daily summer lifestyle doesn’t include spending lots of time summer-cute-hipster-beautyoutside and you are accustom to protecting your skin from the sun depending on your lifestyle, if you’re someone who already restricts the amount of sun exposure you get, or if you are willing restrict the time you spend outside for awhile, it can be a good option.

If you have kids at home, summer is a good time to send them off to grandmas or summer camp for a fun-filled week while you concentrate on your recovery. By the time they return, they will be none-the-wiser. Since most people are pretty busy during the summer months, it won’t be too suspicious if you disappear from your social scene for a week.

Procedures like breast augmentations, breast lifts, breast reductions, eyelid surgeries and tummy tucks are good summer surgery choices. If summer is not a good time for surgery but you want a more youthful look for all your summer events, consider Botox, dermal fillers, or facials and skincare to keep you looking fresh until fall.

I think James Taylor said it best when he sang “Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall…all you’ve got to do is call…”

LOVE YOUR BODY NOW

Friday, February 12th, 2016

LOVE YOUR BODY!

Body bulges can create such a frustration, even for most dedicated gym rats. While body bulges may appear as a result of too much eating mixed with too little exercise, it’s not the only reason for fatty bulges. Sometimes, it is simply the body you were born with. Some bodies, even when at a “normal” weight, with good diet and exercise habits, do not change easily and being disproportionate can be a constant struggle, affecting ones self-image.

I have performed thousands of liposuction /  liposculpture procedures in my Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center in Champaign, through out my career as 4523a Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon. I have seen countless cases of men and women who struggle with bulges whether they are over weight or under weight. If you where born as an apple or pear shape and you fight constantly to maintain or obtain the body shape you want; if fat bulges of the hips, knees, buttock, or thighs etc. are related to lack of proportion, there is a successful, predictable solution at hand.

CPS Blog Photo Nude body5007Traditional liposcultpure is the best solution for contouring your body into a shape that is pleasing to you, leaving you looking and feeling fabulous in any outfit! Suctioning a significant amount fat cells from the appropriate areas can have a magical effect, creating slender, graceful and vivacious female contour or a lean, fit and muscular male form. It is safely performed under general anesthesia in my Joint Commission accredited out-patient surgical facility, with a four day recovery.

There are so many terms used to describe options of fat removal today that it is sometimes difficult to keep them all straight.   Media loves to romanticize new fad techiques like Cool Sculpting or Smart Lipo for example so don’t let them woo you! Just because they are new, does not mean they provide the best or safest long-term solution void of issues.

I believe that traditional liposculpture offers my patients best results. It is a modern and proven technique that in the hands of an experienced, board-certified cosmetic surgeon offers long-term, predictable, smooth results with thousands of ecstatic patients who now love their body

LOOK YOUNGER WITH CO2 MICRO-FRACTIONAL LASER RESURFACING

Friday, May 22nd, 2015

Finding non-surgical ways to look younger isn’t exactly a novel idea, in fact it’s growing by leaps and bounds. Men, women, scientists and clinicians alike are seemingly on a constant search the latest answer to aging.I’m not sure I would put to much stock in most of the options being presented today but there are indeed a few good options for looking younger in situations when surgery is not necessary.

Although dermal filler may get all the media hype, I would say the biggest non-surgical development came about a few years back and is holding strong as the front-runner for non-surgical facial rejuvenation.

“COMICRO-FRACTIONAL LASER RESURFACING”

I have performed well over 500 COMicro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing procedures at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center in Champaign and have yet to have a patient who doesn’t walk away looking younger at their one week appointment and even younger yet at their 3 month appointment. It really is a tiny little bit of magic when it comes to looking younger fast.

CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing https://www.cosmeticplasticsurgery.com/cosmetic-surgery/laser-skin-rejuvenation.cfm is my favorite procedure to perform because I know I will put a smile back on my patient’s face when they look in the mirror and see a reflection looking back at them that they are happy with and can feel confident with. That makes what I do very rewarding on a personal and professional level.

CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing is a non-surgical treatment for:

•lines      •wrinkles               •blotchiness          •brown spots        •builds collagen and elastin

•acne scarring      •rough texture     •Aging skin           •dull, lifeless, sun damaged skin

You will notice more light reflectivity within a week after treatment which creates a softer, more radiant, youthful appearance. It even continues to create more collagen and elastin formation for up to year. That is not to say that you lose results after one year, I’m saying that the treatment actually continues to produce more and more results for up to a year. Now that’s a treatment that keeps on giving!

The beauty of this treatment (sorry, no pun intended) is that BOTH the epidermis (outer layer of skin) and the dermis (middle layer of skin) are treated and affected at the same. The epidermis is where the damaged, color producing cells are located that are responsible for the unwanted appearance of brown spots and tone changes. The dermis is made of elastin and collagen which provides the skin with structure; in other words, they make up the skins pliability, strength, form… When sun exposure and natural aging compromise the dermis; collagen and elastin break down and those dreaded lines and wrinkles start to form.

CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing is performed while you are awake in the privacy and comfort of Dr. Castillo’s state-of-the-art skincare and laser rejuvenation suite. Most patients are ready to re-apply cosmetics with in about four days after treatment. Some more aggressive treatments may take a few days longer.

If you are thinking about non-surgical facial (or body) rejuvenation for any of the above signs of aging, I would definitely recommend considering CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing. I think you will find that you get a great return on your investment!

Middle-Age Muffin Tops

Monday, February 23rd, 2015

Middle-age for most of us brings about change in one way or another. It typically shows up on your doorstep with an under-handed series of hits to the ego that completely blind-side you.   Suddenly, you find yourself in the “it’s time for your colonoscopy” category, which let’s face it, I’ve yet to meet another human who is excited about that promotion.  You trade-in sinusitis for arthritis, begin to complain about lack of wholesome television programing today.  You find yourself searching for the nearest teenager to explain this modern social technology, wondering “why anyone with any good sense would waste their time with Tweeter, Snaptrist and the rest of them. Doesn’t anyone protect their privacy anymore?”

Along with these delightful changes, middle-age often brings about some physical changes too.  It’s like you wake up one morning to find that your abs of steal or lady curves have been replaced with a bulging, muffin top. There are several factors that contribute to the development of the muffin top that moves in and obliterates what was once an hour-glass waistline or fit male physique.

  • Heredity
  • Hormonal changes (that topic deserves it’s own blog post, maybe two or three!)
  • Lifestyle or life choices.

Many of Dr. Castillo’s patients arrive for consultation at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center in Champaign or Bloomington, asking if liposuction can help reduce their “middle-age muffin-top.”  Liposuction or liposculpture is often the solution to many muffin-top issues without the need for more extensive surgery such as an abdominoplasty or tummy tuck.  However, in most cases, it is important to understand that removing fat only from the abdomen and ignoring the bulk of the surrounding torso will not give you the results you envision.

Excess fatty tissue in the abdominal area is most often accompanied by excess fatty tissue (even if at a lesser degree) of the hips (love handles), back, waist and sometimes the lateral thighs.  As Dr. Castillo once told me, “during liposuction, its not the fat you take that counts, it’s what you leave behind.” I think that applies here.  In order to sculpt out the sensuous, proportionate curves of an hour-glass shape, you must also address any bulk of the hips, back and waist that exist.   For our male patients, the same applies.  It is difficult to create the fit, well-proportionated contour of a male physique when excess fatty tissue in surrounding areas is left untreated.

Patients who choose liposuction or liposculpture to restore and define their slim waist of youth often report not only being happy with their new body shape but find that it is a great source of motivation to lead a healthier lifestyle with better exercise and diet choices, increasing their over-all quality of life.

ASK OUR EXPERT: Why is breast fat transplantation more expensive than implants?

Friday, May 16th, 2014

QUESTION:  Why is it that breast augmentation through fat transplantation is more expensive than breast augmentation done with implants?

ASWER:  In order to augment the breast with implants, one needs only to select a desired volume for the implant, place the implant in a pocket, typically created behind the pectoral muscle and…voila…there is a new breast in the size the person always dreamed of.

In contrast, augmentation of breasts with fat transplantation is quite laborious.  The surgeon needs to first harvest the fat via liposuction.  Then the harvested fat must be prepared for transplantation.  Once prepared, the fatty tissue is carefully and strategically placed in many areas throughout the whole breast in order to accomplish a relatively small increase in breast size of approximately 3-4 ounces.  This procedure is time consuming for the surgeon because he/she needs to place this fat through many repetitious passes with a special instrument that deposits the fat within the tissue in small amounts and allows it to be able to be incorporated by the breast into living tissue.

Therefore, the operative time for a regular augmentation through implants is approximately 1-1/2 hours, while to do a breast augmentation through fat transplantation, the operative time required is approximately 3-1/2 hours.  So the procedure becomes longer and more expensive for both the surgeon and the patient.  In addition, for a patient looking for larger volume improvement like that produced by breast implants, https://www.cosmeticplasticsurgery.com/cosmetic-surgery/breast-enlargement.cfm  the procedure would need to be repeated several times in order to accomplish a larger volume.

ASK OUR EXPERT: FAT TRANSPLANTATION

Wednesday, April 30th, 2014

Question:  Can Dr. Castillo take fat from my hips or stomach and put it into my breasts?

Answer: The short answer to that question is yes; though, it is not as simple as it sounds.

Fat transplantation to the breasts has been done for many years, starting in earnest around the mid 1980’s by many cosmetic surgeons. At that time, we did not have answers to important questions like:

  1. What, if any changes would fat create in breast tissue?
  2. Will these changes be misdiagnosed as disease and/or cancer in the future?

Due to the lack of information available at that time, the use of fat transplantation to increase breast volume was never truly accepted or recommended.  However, early results indicated that it did work.

Today we know that we can remove fat from anywhere in the body and transplant it to anywhere in the body with results that will accomplish

  1. an increase in volume
  2. an improvement in the skinFor example, if fat is transplanted underneath scar tissue, the scar tissue tends to remodel and turn into better skin.  In so far as increasing volume, fat transplantation needs to be done with quite a bit of care and by an experienced surgeon because if fat is placed in large lump quantities,  not only will the procedure be ineffective but it  is likely to create issues. Fat needs to be transplanted in very small amounts and in many areas within the breast and surrounding tissue in order to accomplish an increase in the volume of the breast. We can increase the volume of the breasts by approximately 120 cubic centimeters maximum. This is related to a limitation with the rate in which the body will incorporate this fat into the tissue. Fat that is placed in a new area needs to be colonized by small blood vessels and made into living tissue in whatever area it was transplanted.  This can only happen when it is transplanted in small amounts that are small enough to be able to be sustained by the microcirculation of the area.

Fat transplantation is best utilized for patients who are seeking small adjustments to their breast proportions.  If you desire to go from an A to a C cup size breast, fat transplantation will not give you your desired outcome.  To increase breast volume in a more significant way is better accomplished with breast implants. https://www.cosmeticplasticsurgery.com/cosmetic-surgery/breast-enlargement.cfm.
