Barefoot Beauty

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

There are two things a girl should never miss; a great shoe sale, and her nightly skincare regimen.  My most prized possession on earth, without a doubt, is a serious collection of must have heels. There is just something about shoes…oooh…they are just so good for my soul! (I didn’t say “sole,” as that’s a whole other story) I find that even on the worst of days, I can walk in to my shoe closet and find something to put a little sass in my step. As Marilyn Monroe so eloquently put it… “give a girl the right pair of shoes and she can conquer the world.”  So true!

However, if I ever had to choose between giving up my skincare regimen and giving up my beloved shoe “investment,” I would be going barefoot; sad, but barefooted;  And…well…shorter.     ….But I’d have beautiful skin!!

Now I know we’re all inundated with cosmetic commercials telling us that all we have to do is apply their make-up and “wha-la,” you will have flawless, radiant, model-esk skin and everyone will sit up to  take notice as you enter the room. But the reality is flawless radiance doesn’t begin with cosmetics.  It begins with skin and how we take care of it. Proper care and maintenance is the only path to achieve that. The best make-up in the world won’t give you the flawless, smooth complexion you’re looking for if you’re battling dull, dry, flaky, sun-abused skin. A consistent, daily skincare regimen will improve the texture of your skin, getting you yet another step closer to your goal.

So start with the basics … And remember… success can ONLY be accomplished if the basics are part of your DAILY routine…

  1. Cleanse – Clean your skin with a cleanser for your skin type.  The right cleanser should not leave your skin feeling dry and tight. It should feel fresh and clean.  I know this next part is tempting after al one day but – do not go to bed with your make-up on. Pinky swear?!
  2. Exfoliate – Proper exfoliation is a must.  If you develop a dead skin build up, your skin will look dull and develop a yellow tinge. Lines, wrinkles and poor texture will become more noticeable and your make-up will not lay properly on your skin.  You can accomplish this task in several ways.  I recommend monthly medical microdermabrasion treatments to remove dead cells and brighten your skin along with a nightly application of Retexturing Complex  or Retinol Serum PM by Castillo MD Skin Science.  I also love, love, love  to use a weekly application of the Dr. Castillo’s Microdermabrasion Scrub.  It leaves my skin so smooth.
  3. Hydration – Choose a moisturizer for your skin type.  Proper hydration is imperative when it comes to creating smooth, fresh, supple skin.
  4. Protection – The first three steps on your path to sensational skin will mean nothing without providing UVA/UVB sun protection, 365 days per year.

I referred to steps 1-4 as the basics.  That is because in some cases, you may need to add a treatment to your skincare regimen as well.  This may be in the form of particular active ingredients to enhance your basic routine such l. It could also include of series of IPL (Intense Pulse Light), Medical Microdermabrasion or even CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing, just depending on the severity of your skin concerns and your goals.

Taking your skin to new heights!

Deadly Decisions

Wednesday, May 9th, 2012

Surely by now, you have heard that there is lobbyist action petitioning to restrict teenage use of tanning beds. How do you feel about your teenager using a tanning bed? Would you allow it? Would you drive them to the appointment? Would you pay for their tanning package?  This is a hot topic of teen desires vs. parental responsibilities that is causing a lot of controversy.

I bring up this topic as Prom and graduation are almost here. As our beautiful girls prepare for the events they have been dreaming of, achieving that ideal appearance often means several trips to a tanning salon to give their skin the golden glow they desire. Unfortunately, more and more young women are getting more “color”  than they bargained for in the form of Melanoma – the deadliest form of skincancer today.

Since the days of CoCo Channel, we, as a culture, have been groomed to believe that tanned skin is beautiful skin. I would bet it is one of the longest-running, certainly the most deadly fashion trend to date. Tanning beds (or cancer beds as I often refer to them) have become intensely popular among teenagers and I have to believe that it is our duty as parents to not only protect them from harm’s way but to educate them on the risks of tanning so they are able to make informed decisions about their safety when they are on their own.  Alarming increases in diagnosed skin cancers among people under 30 who use tanning beds has caused organizations including the American Academy of Dermatology to lobby for laws limiting minor’s access to tanning beds.

At Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center, too often Dr. Castillo or I will see a patient who is fearful of a suspicous spot or fighting a brutle battle with skin cancer.  The stories are always heart-breaking.  As a mother of two beautiful daughters who fill my house with their friends on a regular basis, it has become my mission to discuss the dangers of tanning bed use (and exposure to the sun’s UV radiation) with all of my daughter’s friends. The response that I have received from most of their friends has actually surprised me. I expected the typical teen “yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, but it won’t happen to me” response.  Instead, these teenage girls sat down with me, and they listened, like sponges.  (Now I know I just used the term “teenagers” and “listened” in the same sentence, so I will give you a minute to try to re-gather your composure and then we will move forward).  Ready?

Most of them had no idea that they could get cancer from tanning beds and certainly didn’t realize that it could take their life. The amount of misconception I heard about sun exposure and tanning beds was extensive to say the least. I think that is true of a lot of adults out there as well.  I’ve even gotten a few phones from my daughter’s friends that went something like “Roxanne, I’m at Walgreens buying a sunscreen.  There are so many, can you help me pick out the right one?” Now, unfortunately one of these phone calls came in 2 hours past my bedtime… but that’s a teen for you, right?

So I am blogging today to encourage you to become educated on all the recent updates and valid studies surrounding the dangers of tanning beds and UV radiation and to share your knowledge or even this blog with anyone in your life who may be using a tanning bed.  You can find proven informaiton at sites like http://www.skincancer.org/   and http://www.cancer.org/  You never know when this information could save the life of someone you love. Let me arm you with a few proven statistics to get started.

Did you know your risk of melanoma increases by 75% when you use a tanning bed before the age of 30? According to the American Skin Cancer Foundation, it also increases your risk of being diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma by 2 ½ times and makes you 1 ½ times more likely to be diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer shifted indoor tanning devices to the highest cancer risk category: “carcinogenic to humans.”  That means time spent is a tanning bed is as dangerous as Arsenic.  Would you allow someone you love to knowingly expose themselves to arsenic?

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the USA today.  According to the American Skin Cancer Foundation, there are more than 3.5 million skin cancers and  two million NEW skin cancer cases diagnoses annually.  One in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime. Just to give you an idea of the rapid increase in skin cancer diagnoses today, I wrote an article in March of 2009, titled “One Million Reasons to Protect Your Children.” https://www.cosmeticplasticsurgery.com/blog/?p=31 Just three short years later, it would have to be titled TWO Million Reasons to Protect Your Children! That is a pretty sobering thought, isn’t it?

There are now good alternative out there that can satisify the needs of both teens and parents.  Tanning lotions and spray tans can give the popular sun kissed look your teen desires while providing peace of mind that they are not being exposured to life-threatening UV radiation.

Below are three other past blog articles that will give you more information about UV radiation and the damage it can cause.

Ask Our Expert: Chapped, Dry Winter Lips

Monday, February 20th, 2012

Q: My lips get very dry.  They peel and crack and the skin around my mouth gets chapped and sore during the winter.  What can I do to stop this?  I have tried several brands of chapstick without getting relief.

A: Just like the rest of your skin, your lips suffer during weather changes too.  It is important to protect them from the sun and keep them well moisturized.  Protect your lips from sun exposure all year long, not just in the summer.  Remember that UVA rays are present 365 days per year.

I have a few recommendations for you:

  1. Use a medical grade broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunblock on your lips-

When choosing a sunblock, look for one that says broad or full spectrum UVA/UVB protection on the label.  Then look at the ingredient listing on the back.  It needs to list either titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, preferably 7% or higher. I recommend TiSilc 60.  TiSilc 60 contains a high percentage of Zinc oxide to reflect dangerous UV radiation.  Using sun protection is even more important for cracked, dehydrated lips as they will be damaged more easily than well hydrated skin. TiSilc 60 also contains soothing Green Tea Extract, antioxidants and is a moisturizer.

  1. Avoid licking your lips-

The re-wetting of your lips will not only chap your lips but the wetness will also break down your sunblock.  Remember, there is no true “waterproof” sunblock.  They are just water-resistant (good for up to 80 minutes once wet).

  1. Drink more water –

Remember, dry lips are a sign that you are not drinking enough water.  If your lips are dehydrated, increase your water consumption.

  1. Apply a hydrating lip treatment or balm on top of the sunblock-

Using an ointment or balm will prohibit moisture from escaping, keeping your lips hydrated.  This can be as simple as applying Vaseline at bedtime or throughout the day.

We carry two great options at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Skin Restoration and Laser Institute. I recommend one of two options:

The first option is Glo Minerals Lip Balm:

Glo Minerals Lip balm is available in Mint and Cherry.  Glo Minerals Lip Balm works well to re-store moisture and relieve irritated, chapped skin around the mouth. It protects lips with broad-spectrum SPF 15 while nurturing botanicals of hemp seed oil, meadowfoam and mango seed butter soothe and heal. You will begin to notice smoother, softer lips within a few applications. You can even apply it to the skin around your lips (before you put on your make-up).  It is clear so it will blend in. It can be used by itself, with a lip liner or under your lipstick. This treatment can be applied multiple times per day.  Remember to re-apply this treatment at bedtime for increased hydration.  Cost $12.50

Option #2: Exfoliating Lip Wand

With the new Exfoliating Lip Wand, you can tranform your lips in one easy step! Nourishing wax microcrystals derived from jojoba seeds slough away dry skin and then melt on contact to deliver soft, smooth and hydrated lips. It is enhanced witha light peachy scent that is simply delicious! Cost: $16.00

Option #3 – TNS Lip Plump System

This is a 2- step system that provides increased lip volume while gently exfoliating dry skin and providing much needing hydration.

TNS Lip Renewal

This  treatment cream combines the rejuvenating strength of the patented growth factor blend TNS® and collagen-filling spheres to enhance the fullness of the lips and smooth surface imperfections.

  • Rapid-action skin smoothing and softening effect
  • Improvement of lip texture and condition
  • Increase of lip volume

Lip Plumper

This clear plumping gloss with niacin enhances the natural color of lips.

  • Enhances natural lip color
  • Give lips fuller, more youthful look
  • Increase of lip volume
  • Rapid-action skin smoothing and softening effect
  • Improvement of lip texture and condition
  • Increase of lip volume

Cost:$52.00

Budgeting for Beauty – Part 3

Roxanne, Skincare and Laser Specialist

If you’re still under the impression that Dog is man’s best friend, then you haven’t experienced Botox Cosmetic®. Botox Cosmetic® is the most performed cosmetic procedure in the United States for a reason. It works! Better yet, it takes 5 minutes and then you are off to drop the kids at soccer practice. No one wants to be the oldest looking mom or dad at play group, but taking time out for ourselves can sometimes be a challenge. Botox® is a great solution that requires no down-time, little investment and offers great improvement. Over the years, the media has wrongfully mislead the public about Botox Cosmetic®. I think it would be best to start by discussing the facts about Botox®.

Botox® https://www.cosmeticplasticsurgery.com/cosmetic-surgery/botox.cfmhas been FDA approved and utilized in the US and Canada for over 19 years. Botox® was first used to treat muscle spasms. Canadian ophthalmologist, Dr. Jean Carruthers noticed that it had a side effect of reducing wrinkles. She and her husband, a dermatologist, began using Botox® off label for wrinkle reduction with impressive results. In2002, the practice of utilizing Botox Cosmetic®  for wrinkle reduction became widespread in the US when the same formulation received FDA approval for the treatment of facial lines.Botox Cosmetic® is purified protein that is injected with a very small needle directly into over-active muscles. It relaxes the muscles, creating a smoothing out of lines created by repetitive expressions or motions.Botox can be used to improve the appearance of frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet. Injected properly, it can even raise the eye brow, giving the patient a bright-eyed, well rested look. Because the needle so small, there is very little to no pain involved. These injections to do not require down-time and you can return to your daily activity without any visible signs of treatment. Treatment performed by a trained professional should never create an “expressionless or “frozen” appearance. That being said, please do not receive Botox injections at a Botox party at your girlfriend’s house. Authentic Botox is ONLY available through a physician’s office. The effects of Botox lasts 3-4 months. In my opinion, the biggest downside to using Botox is once you see the results, you will want to continue using it!In our office, Botox Cosmetic ranges from $300 – $400 per visit. This is a very low cost way to obtain a more youthful appearance. We offer additional discounts to established patients making it even more affordable.I would like to leave you with this thought today. When your budget is forcing you to make tough decisions how to best invest you money and you are trying to decide whether to purchase a new outfit with shoes and accessories to match or invest in a skin care treatment, remember this:(coming from a fashion enthusiast!! ) while you may get a couple season out of your wardrobe purchases, but your skin will stay with you through out every season of your life.Continue to check back with us, as we will continue to review technologies available, letting you know which ones are worth your investment.

Beautiful Skin…It’s NEVER Too Late

Monday, October 17th, 2011

Beautiful Skin

Awhile back, I was exiting the movie theater in Savoy, Illinois when I heard a woman’s voice.  “Excuse me, Miss.  Miss, excuse me.”  I turned around as a lady put her hand on my forearm and said “I’m sorry to bother you but I just had to tell you that you have beautiful skin.”  Clearly an extremely intelligent woman, she then turned to the gentleman whose arm I was on and said “and you sir, are very lucky!” I couldn’t have paid for a moment as fabulous as that one (lol)!  I still smile and giggle a little every time I think about it.

In that instant I knew that all the nights I had stayed up an extra five minutes taking care of my skin instead of just hopping into bed had paid off.   Just last week I was pushing my shopping cart through Meijer’s when a gentleman stopped, looked at me and said very sincerely, “you have the most beautiful skin.”  I blushed, thanked him for his compliment and went back to the mundane task of grocery shopping, only now with a lifted spirit and smile on my face.

So am I one of the “lucky” ones, just born with great skin?  I don’t think so.  I had thin, dry skin most of my life.  In fact, as far as luck goes, I don’t believe there is such a thing.  I have always believed that “luck” is the bi-product of being prepared.  It is about applying effort to those things that are important.  Having “beautiful” or healthy skin is no different.  I am telling you this story because I want you know that if you are bothered by the condition of your skin, it’s not too late to make an improvement that can really make you feel good about yourself.

There was a time when like many others, I wasn’t so nice to my skin.  As a child and teenager (when we are exposed to much of the sun damage that haunts us later in life) I spent most of my summers at the lake or outside riding horses or playing sports. I have two older sisters that I looked up to.  When I saw them putting baby oil on their skin to get the darkest tan, I followed right behind them.  I even followed them into the tanning salon.  I abused my skin, not knowing what kind of consequences it could cause later in life.  You know, dull, lifeless skin with pre-mature wrinkles, brown spots, broken blood vessels of the face, neck, chest and legs, sagging skin that makes us resemble our mother much earlier in life than we are ready for.   And let’s not forget…skin cancers.

Decades later, science has armed us with the knowledge of the kind of destruction sun exposure will cause.  We now know that most of the symptoms of aging skin (lines, wrinkles, broken blood vessels, brown spots, larger pores, rough texture, even freckles) are caused from sun damage not chronological aging.   We have had exciting advances in technology that allow us to now turn back time and correct some of sun damage we are marked with.  Thank you science!

So how did I change my once dull, lifeless, flaking skin into skin that makes complete strangers feel compelled to stop me just to tell me I have beautiful skin?  I did it with diligence and patience.  I give my skin a few minutes every morning and every night and in return it has given me back years.  So much so that most of our patients would tell you they are shocked to find out I have a daughter who is a Freshmen is College.

First and most importantly, protect your skin from the sun by using a medical-grade, physical sunblock such as Tisilc 60 and limit your sun exposure.  I’m not saying you can never see the light of day. Enjoy spending time outdoors, hiking, skiing, biking etc., just take advantage of opportunities to seek shade, wear a nice hat and re-apply your sunblock. Protect your skin every single day, not just in the summer, not just when it’s hot, but 365 days a year.  For those of you who are reading this and are thinking “but I have to get some color on my face”…try applying a bronzer instead.

Second, depending on the condition of your skin, you may need a skin rejuvenation treatment. A qualified Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon such as G.D. Castillo M.D. can help you decide which choice is right for you.  For me, it was CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing of the face. This procedure took my skin to a whole other level, erasing lines, pigmentation, restoring collagen and smoothing out the surface of my skin to a point that it feels much like the skin of a new born baby.

Third, MAINTAINANCE! Say it with me,” MAIN-TAIN-ANCE!”  This is where consistency and dedication come in.   This will require daily applications of medical-grade skin care products and possibly an occasional microdermabrasion, chemical peel or other facial treatment when needed.  Apply your medical grade skincare products consistently, every morning and every night.  Be sure to follow the regimen your medical skincare specialist and cosmetic plastic surgeon design for you.  You must be patient!  Quality, scientifically proven skincare products need time to make real changes in your skin.

Now, of course as a Medical Skincare and Laser Specialist, I have an advantage. Without the knowledge I have gained about the right combination of medical- grade skincare products and treatments needed to accomplish results, I would be as frustrated as most of the men and women that walk into both the Savoy and Bloomington locations at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Skin Restoration and Laser Institute. The key to successful maintenance is applying the right combination of medical grade skincare and sticking with it.  Avoid skipping around from product to product. This action is sure to set you for failure.  Your skin needs consistent applications of scientifically proven effective medical grade skincare.

Many of our patients at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Clinic have expressed concern that it’s too late to improve their sun damaged, aging skin.   You can’t take back to hours and hours of sun exposure but your skin has an amazing ability to regenerate and repair itself with a little help from science, technology and professional experience. Most importantly, you don’t have to go on a mission of trial and error to discover how to obtain beautiful, radiant skin that make people stop you on the street.  The steps are laid out right here in this blog.

It’s NEVER too late.

Protect Children From The Sun

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

Researchers estimate over ONE MILLION NEW CASES of skin cancer will be reports this year alone!

Did you know research has shown two or more sunburns during childhood significantly increases the chance of developing skin cancer during your child’s life time? By taking time to learn more about sun-safety, you will be able to teach your family safe-sun habits that will last them a lifetime. You could even save a life!

Invasive melanoma is malignant, often fatal form of skin cancer.

According to the research of Brooke Rutledge Seckel, M.D., Assistant Professor of Surgery, Harvard Medical School, in 1935, Americans had a 1 in 1,500 chance of developing invasive melanoma, by the 1980, the rate increased to 1 in 250 and 1 in 74 by 2001. That number is estimated to be 1 in every 50 Americans by 2010!

Sun rays are ionizing radiation, no different than the radiation of an atomic blast or a cobalt 60 therapy found in cancer treatment centers. The sun is the number one cause of skin cancer (melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma) in the United States. Even though most people who are diagnosed with skin cancer are adults, skin cancer affects children as well. The sun is also responsible for reducing immune responses and many long-lasting aging effects such as lines, wrinkles, loss of collagen & elasticity, brown spots, freckles & broken spider veins.

Using sun protection any time your child may be exposed to the sun is a must. It will prevent sun damage and reduce the risk of skin cancers and premature aging. Sunburns hurt. They can cause fever, swelling, blisters and pigmentation changes. Sunscreens are meant to be used as a source of protection, not as a reason to stay in the sun for a longer period of time.   Sunscreens are not just for those with pale skin who burn in the sun. Sun protection is a must no matter what color your skin is. Remember, tanned skin is damaged skin!

Later this week we will talk about sunblock and how Cosmetic Plastic Surgery can help you in the fight against sun damage.

Ask Our Expert – Stress Acne

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

Ask Our Expert:  Social Acne

Q: The only time I seem to get acne is just before an important social event.  Could this really be happening or is it just my imagination?  Is there something I can do to prevent these embarrassing breakouts?

A:  The stress generated from preparing for a social event and wanting to look your best can have a large effect on your skin.  Increased stress can actually have a physical effect on your skin because stress increases the production of cortisol.  Cortisol is a stress hormone that can boost oil production.  Dead skin cells are then pulled into your pores causing acne to form. When your oil glands quickly become over-active, it can not only cause those embarrassing breakouts that you are referring to but often leaves skin looking dull and lifeless.

I would recommend scheduling an appointment at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Clinic about a 7 – 10 before your next stressful event for a Vitalize Peel. For your convenience, Dr. Castillo offers this treatment at both his Savoy (Champaign – Urbana) and Bloomington locations.  The Vitalize Peel will eliminate much of the dead skin cells before they can be pulled down into pores when you experience that stress-hormone release. It will also leave your skin radiant and refreshed for your big event.  During this appointment we can also talk about  designing a medical grade skincare program around these issues.
