How Can I Protect Myself From Melanoma?

Thursday, April 29th, 2021

If we have learned anything over the past year, living life “unprotected” can have serious consequences.  Since the pandemic has decreased our social options, many of us are spending more time than usual outside; this means more opportunity for sun exposure.  With the potential for removing masks in the very near future, I expect the time outside to continue to increase as we are able to loosen the social reins. It’s important to think ahead about protecting our skin from UV rays.  Skipping this simple step will not only cause pre-mature skin aging but can also lead to a devastating diagnoses of Melanoma.

Use multiple tools to help decrease sun exposure like applying and re-applying broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen every 2 hours, seeking shade, wearing a wide-brim UV protected sun hat and sunglasses, and limiting high-sun exposure time because it’s easy to over-look your next sunscreen application and end up with unintended sun exposure, especially when you are working outside or  having a great time with friends.  Did you know, according to the CDC, the occurrence of melanoma has doubled within the past three decades in the United States? One person now dies of melanoma every hour of every day.

May is Melanoma Awareness Month. Melanoma Month was put into place to encourage efforts to increase awareness about melanoma, the dangers of UV exposure, how to identify suspicious skin changes, and how to protect yourself and your family. UV exposure cannot only cause pre-mature aging such as wrinkles, lines, rough, uneven texture, brown spots and spider veins, but it primarily responsible for all forms of skin cancer.

What is Melanoma?

Melanoma is the most-deadly form of skin cancer.  It develops in pigment producing cells called melanocytes. While basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are more common forms of skin cancer, melanoma takes more lives because it can quickly spread to other organ if it is not diagnosed and treated in the early stages.

What does melanoma look like? What should I look for?

  1. A spot, lesion, bump or mole that becomes painful, tender, itchy, or bleeds and doesn’t heal.
  2. Visual changes on the skin such as shape, color, size, flaking or bleeding of a new or existing spot.
  3. A spot, lesion, bump or mole that looks shiny, waxy or pale in color.
  4. Red bumps that become crusty and / or bleed.
  5. Red, flat spot that has a rough texture, is dry or scaly.
  6. One half of a mole or a pigmented spot that is an uneven shape (asymmetrical) or has irregular or ill-defined borders.

***This is just a list of SOME of the signs of melanoma, but it could appear differently on a case to case basis. See your doctor with any suspicious signs.

Which factors can put me at a higher risk for melanoma?

  1. Sun / UV exposure – Skin cancers are mostly the result of UV exposure, that includes both sun exposure and UV exposure from tanning beds and other tanning devices.
  2. Family history – If you have a family history of skin cancer, visit your dermatologist for frequent skin checks.
  3. Skin type – while skin cancers are diagnosed much more frequently in lighter skin types, it often proves more deadly in darker skin types as the signs of skin cancer often do not appear on dark skin types until the later metastatic stages.

How can I protect myself from melanoma?

  1. Make UV protection a priority! Apply a broad-spectrum, UVA/UVB physical sunscreen generously every day of the year. Re-apply every two hours as needed when exposed. If you are swimming or sweating, re-apply every 80 minutes. Be generous with your sunscreen applications.  It takes one shot glass of sunscreen to cover the average body appropriately.
  2. LIMIT your sun exposure time. Applying sunscreen is not meant to be a free ticket to all day exposure.
  3. Wear GOOD UV protective sunglasses! UV exposure has also been linked to cataracts and other eye conditions.
  4. Wear a wide-brimmed, UV protected sun hat and seek shade.
  5. Wear UV protective clothing.
  6. Avoid sun exposure between 11am-3pm.
  7. Do frequent self-checks and visit your dermatologist with any suspicious changes.

Help us improve community knowledge about the dangers of UV radiation and decrease the number of lives effected or lost to melanoma by sharing this post on your social media platforms and sharing this knowledge with your friends and family.

Stop Committing These Seven Sins Of Skincare: Get Solutions Now

Friday, February 10th, 2017

Fabulous skin is in at any age!  While most of us  want to look our best and avoid pre-mature skin aging, sometimes we commit skincare skins that defeat our goals without even realizing it.  Here are a few skin sins that we share with our skin rejuvenation patients at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center.

  • Sin #1 – Unprotected sun exposure:

Apply a physical suncreen– every single day, without fail, that’s 365 days a year… every year.  You get the picture 🙂  UV radiation is non-discriminatory.  It will hunt down your skin winter, spring, summer and fall.  It doesn’t care if its sunny or cloudy so daily protection and re-application are key.  Treat this step as part of your daily morning routine, just like brushing your teeth, even when you are not going outside.  This will help establish a habit so that on busy mornings you will be less likely to forget.

  • Sin #2 – Not cleaning your skin after a workout:

Clean your skin after exercising – Washing your skin right after your work-out will help to prevent clogged pores, break-outs, and irritations. If you are  like many people who do not shower at the gym, then keep a tub of Clear Skin Pads by Castillo MD Skin Science in your gym bag. Whisk one across your face at the end of your workout. These triple-action, maximum-strength corrective pads help rid your skin of pore-clogging oils, sweat and debris after your workout. This decreases blackheads and whiteheads and help prevent future breakouts.

  • Sin #3 – SMOKING:

Stop smoking – Among other health concerns, smoking reduces circulation and the oxygen levels in your blood which also effects your skin. It can result in pre-mature aging. Smoking can effect the smoothness, texture and tone of your skin, producing wrinkles, rough texture, and a grayish dull tone. Be sure to avoid second hand smoke as well as it is also very damaging to your skin.

  • Sin #4 – Picking at blemishes:

Do not pick! – I repeat, DO NOT pick at blemishes.  At Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center, we suggest our patients begin a custom regimen of medical grade acne skin care products to reduce or rid their breakouts, thus removing the temptation to pick! Picking can create permanent scarring or changes in pigmentation. Our patients have great success with Castillo MD Skin Science acne products like the  Medicated Cleansing Mousse, Acne Control Serum and Clear Skin Pads.

  • Sin #5 – Dead Skin Build Up:

Exfoliate your skin – Exfoliate your skin 1-2 times per week with a microdermabrasion shower scrub.  Treat yourself to a medical microdermabrasion once a month to keep your complexion free of dead cells and looking smooth and bright.

  • Sin #6 – Mistreatment of your hands:

Be nice to your hands -Treat your skin and nails with care.  Wear gloves when lifting heavy objects or working outside.  Avoid using your nails or fingers to do things like open box tops.  There are actually special tools for that! Avoid washing your hands to hot water.  Wash with warm water instead.  Hot water can be very drying to your skin. Apply moisturizer after each wash.  Remember to apply sunscreen to your hands daily; just driving in the car exposes them to a significant amount of UV radiation which can cause brown spots and pre-mature aging of your hands.

  • Sin #7 –  Going to bed with your make-up on:

At the very least, cleanse and moisturize before bed – It is so easy to just crawl into bed without removing your make-up after a long day when your energy is zapped but your skin begs of you to resist the temptation.  Going to bed with your make-up on makes it nearly impossible for your skin to perform its nightly duties like natural sloughing, repair and regeneration. Remember that your skin has had a busy day too.  If you are good to your skin; your skin will be good to you!

What Causes Wrinkles? Can Dermal Filler Really Help?

Wednesday, July 13th, 2016

Most of us grow up understanding that wrinkles are just part of life – at least until it happens to us. Youth has this way of making us feel energetic and invincible, like we can conquer the world. That’s pretty hard to give up. It seems only natural that looking our best makes us feel our best, and feeling our best encourages us to keep conquering whatever comes our way.

Assuming you are one of the millions, NOT welcoming wrinkles with open arms, then you’re probably looking for a few good options for your aging arsenal.

There are many viable surgical and non-surgical wrinkle smoothing solutions that can have you back to daily life asap.  These include anything from Botox to laser resurfacing or a facelift. Sometimes dermal fillers such as Restylane Lift, Restylane Silk, Juvaderm or Radiesse can be a good solution to combat those are earlier stages of aging.

So what causes those pesky wrinkles anyway?

  1. As we get older, we experience a breakdown in collagen and elastin in our skin. We begin to notice appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and textural changes. Of course, this can happen even sooner if you’ve live the life of a sun bunny. UV exposure is the number one culprit for pre-mature aging.4982
  1. As we age, we can loose some subcutaneous fat under the skin. Subcutaneous fat provides the volume needed to maintain a youthful appearance. (Think of dropping a wrinkled raisin into a glass of water, the water plumps the raisin, restoring its volume). This loss of volume creates loose skin, which results in sagging, wrinkles and eventually the desire to seek help from Dr. G.D. Castillo. You may begin to notice nasolabial folds or parentheses from the nose to the mouth, lip lines, marionette lines, sunken in lower lids and disappearing cheek prominence.
  1. As if reasons #1 & #2 weren’t enough of a blow to an aging ego, they are typically followed by the loss of boney structures and underlying tissue support. The loss of boney structure and tissue support creates more sagging and more wrinkling. As this occurs, skin moves downward with the help of gravity like that of a deflated balloon or wilting flower.

How can a dermal filler help improve unwanted facial aging?

Today, dermal fillers are not just used to give you a perfectly pouty lip, fillers can actually provide nice improvements to a mild to moderately aging face. They work by filling in lines and wrinkles and by providing much needed volume. Dermal fillers fill in lines around the mouth, or other areas of the face to create a smoother appearance. They plump up sunken in areas such as the lower eyelids, nasolabial folds and can restore or create a beautifully prominent cheek.

When patients first begin to notice

Create balance with dermal fillers. Lasts upto 18 months.

the signs of aging, they are often looking for a subtle change before they work their way up to a more dramatic change like facial surgery as the signs of aging progress. Some patients find dermal fillers to be an attractive choice because they can do it on a Friday and return to work on a Monday with no one being the wiser.

It is important to recognize that most people who are concerned about unwanted signs of aging will only benefit from fillers for a period of time. Fillers cannot take the place of having facial plastic surgery nor can they give you surgical results. They can only put a band aide on aging for a period of time. That being said, band aides are sometimes desirable. They can be a quick fix to mild lines and wrinkles, until the time is right for procedures like a facelift, a neck lift, or CO2 Laser Resurfacing.

Quality Facial Plastic Surgery Is Popular Now Then Ever Before!

Friday, January 15th, 2016

Orange isn’t the new black this season!  It looks like facial plastic surgery is now the new black, especially the facelift procedure in our Champaign-area office.

In the last few years, facial plastic surgery has gained a tremendous popularity. What’s more, it seems to be a very open topic. Patients, especially women, are no longer hiding the fact that they’ve had plastic surgery. Even among Dr. Castillo’s midwest conservative patients, it seems that “don’t ask, don’t tell” has changed to, “Hey, I just told my girlfriend about my facial plastic surgery experience, and she will be in your office next week for a consultation.” Over the past year, facelifts have become our most popular surgery. We are currently performing more facial plastic surgeries than breast augmentations!

So why has facial plastic surgery, such as facelift, neck lift and rhinoplasty, become the hot ticket? Why is facial plastic surgery more acceptable now than in the past? Why are more patients willing to share the very information about their patient status that we go to great lengths to keep confidential?

Baby Boomers Abound

Well, I’m not a behavioral expert, so I can only speculate. Of course, there is the fact that baby-boomers make up the largest segment of the population, and they fall within the age category for most facelifts. But I think the aging population is only a small part of the equation.

Be Your Best Self

I think that women are more empowered today than they were even 10-15 years ago. They hold high-powered positions in the workplace, they are often the highest earners in their families, and they are regarded as equals more than ever before. I think this power gives many women the voice to openly discuss and pursue the things that will improve their quality of life. They have a taste of what self-improvement can do for their lives, whether it’s using a personal exercise coach, opting for cosmetic dental work, changing their hair color, or getting a face lift. Instead of trying to hide their decisions, they are now speaking out to say, “I love my results, and I’m so happy I did this for myself!” They want to share their personal joy, and they’re willing to let their friends in on the secret so their friends can also reap the rewards of self-improvement.

Media Influence

We also have to consider the power of media. Plastic surgeons are frequently quoted in top magazines, discussing the latest advances in procedures and techniques. Celebrities are more open about their cosmetic procedures. Multiple TV shows focus on cosmetic surgery and take viewers through the process (though some are a little unrealistic for my taste).

Although not your typical plastic surgery case, Caitlyn Jenner brought much attention to cosmetic surgery and the changes it can accomplish. All of these factors make facial plastic surgery more relatable to the average person who just wants to look and feel their best. It shows us that there are numerous surgical and non-surgical options, and we can have some say on how we age and how we take care of our bodies, our health, our skin, and our overall appearance.

Natural-Looking Results

Dr. Castillo’s patients appreciate the natural, well-rested, and youthful look that he has built his reputation on. Patients often tell me that they are so amazed that no one has figured out that they had facial surgery (that’s the sign of really good surgery, by the way). Our patients’ friends just notice how great or well-rested they look and assume they have a new hair cut or mattress. Recently, I have had several patients share that they had no intention of telling anyone about their surgery or skin rejuvenation procedure. But after surgery, they were so thrilled with their results that they were eager to share their story with friends and say, “Yes, I had a facelift, and I’ll be happy to give you the name of my surgeon.”

If you want to see the results you might expect from a facelift, browse through our before-and-after photo gallery. You can also schedule a facelift, neck lift, or rhinoplasty consultation by contacting us online or calling us at (217) 359-7508 (Savoy).

Which Ways Can a Professional Skincare Specialist Help Me?

Wednesday, August 26th, 2015

As a skincare specialist,  I will closely examine your skin, take a detailed history, discuss any skin conditions, allergies and concerns. Each of these factors along with your goals are compiled to develop the best plan for you. We will discuss in detail why we recommend a specific treatment such as CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing, Intense Pulse Light or

effective skincare product, as it pertains directly to you.  You will leave with a clear understanding of the benefits and risks and what to expect before and after your treatment.

I think our skincare patients would tell you the most valuable advantage is the wealth of information and advice you will receive. We remove the guess work, the myths, the false hype of the next best fad and simply present you with proven-effective options that will help you reach your goals. A skincare specialist can educate you on the right ingredients for cleansers, moisturizers, sun screens, anti-oxidants, boosters and retinoids to help you see results fast and get the most out of each application not to mention the fun stuff like experimenting with different make up colors and looks.

Once you have established a patient relationship with me as your skincare specialist, I am available to discuss questions or directions you may have forgotten over the phone.  This type of individualized service just isn’t available at a makeup counter or through on-line ordering.  Our goal is to prescribe the right treatments and at-home products so that you never again end up with a drawer full of products that don’t work!

Yours truly,

New Exclusive & Informative Interview with Skincare & Laser Specialist, Roxanne – Question #1

Thursday, July 23rd, 2015

Question: How has the skin rejuvenation suite at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center sustained its success over the past 25 years?

Roxanne: “We are fortunate enough that the Skin Rejuvenation Suite has a wonderful, well- respected, word-of-mouth reputation I would imagine is due to many factors:”

  • 1. “Our focus at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center has always been about providing the best possible experience for each patient, every time. The nature of our services allows us to make deep connections with our patients as we guide them through their journey both surgically and non-surgically.”
  • 2. “We are a state-of-the art facility with a physician / cosmetic plastic surgeon who has over 30 years experienceCosmetic Plastic Surgery 9/11/12e in this field and as a staff, we all benefit from working under his direction. Dr. Castillo has created a well-oiled, professional, educated team of caring individuals, simply making us good at what we do, whether it is plastic surgery, Botox or skin rejuvenation. “
  • 3. “We do not work on commission. This means it’s a relaxed environment not only for the staff but for our patients as well. If there is a service that a patient is interested in, we tell them about it but our patients are never pressured to do anything. I believe this is yet another reason why patients refer others to us. Who would want to refer a friend to an office that is willing to pressure their friend into anything?” You will never find that kind of mentality or leadership here.
  • 4. “We are not interested in offering every new fad that comes along. We are interested ONLY in offering our patients the highest-quality skin rejuvenation and skincare product regimens that offer real improvements. Essentially, we are all results oriented perfectionists here and we want what our patients want; the best results possible!”
