Solutions For Seven Sins Of Skincare

Friday, February 10th, 2017

Fabulous skin is in at any age!  While most of us  want to look our best and avoid pre-mature skin aging, sometimes we commit skincare skins that defeat our goals without even realizing it.  Here are a few skin sins that we share with our skin rejuvenation patients at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center.

  • Sin #1 – Unprotected sun exposure:

Apply a physical suncreen– every single day, without fail, that’s 365 days a year… every year.  You get the picture 🙂  UV radiation is non-discriminatory.  It will hunt down your skin winter, spring, summer and fall.  It doesn’t care if its sunny or cloudy so daily protection and re-application are key.  Treat this step as part of your daily morning routine, just like brushing your teeth, even when you are not going outside.  This will help establish a habit so that on busy mornings you will be less likely to forget.

  • Sin #2 – Not cleaning your skin after a workout:

Clean your skin after exercising – Washing your skin right after your work-out will help to prevent clogged pores, break-outs, and irritations. If you are  like many people who do not shower at the gym, then keep a tub of Clear Skin Pads by Castillo MD Skin Science in your gym bag. Whisk one across your face at the end of your workout. These triple-action, maximum-strength corrective pads help rid your skin of pore-clogging oils, sweat and debris after your workout. This decreases blackheads and whiteheads and help prevent future breakouts.

  • Sin #3 – SMOKING:

Stop smoking – Among other health concerns, smoking reduces circulation and the oxygen levels in your blood which also effects your skin. It can result in pre-mature aging. Smoking can effect the smoothness, texture and tone of your skin, producing wrinkles, rough texture, and a grayish dull tone. Be sure to avoid second hand smoke as well as it is also very damaging to your skin.

  • Sin #4 – Picking at blemishes:

Do not pick! – I repeat, DO NOT pick at blemishes.  At Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center, we suggest our patients begin a custom regimen of medical grade acne skin care products to reduce or rid their breakouts, thus removing the temptation to pick! Picking can create permanent scarring or changes in pigmentation. Our patients have great success with Castillo MD Skin Science acne products like the  Medicated Cleansing Mousse, Acne Control Serum and Clear Skin Pads.

  • Sin #5 – Dead Skin Build Up:

Exfoliate your skin – Exfoliate your skin 1-2 times per week with a microdermabrasion shower scrub.  Treat yourself to a medical microdermabrasion once a month to keep your complexion free of dead cells and looking smooth and bright.

  • Sin #6 – Mistreatment of your hands:

Be nice to your hands -Treat your skin and nails with care.  Wear gloves when lifting heavy objects or working outside.  Avoid using your nails or fingers to do things like open box tops.  There are actually special tools for that! Avoid washing your hands to hot water.  Wash with warm water instead.  Hot water can be very drying to your skin. Apply moisturizer after each wash.  Remember to apply sunscreen to your hands daily; just driving in the car exposes them to a significant amount of UV radiation which can cause brown spots and pre-mature aging of your hands.

  • Sin #7 –  Going to bed with your make-up on:

At the very least, cleanse and moisturize before bed – It is so easy to just crawl into bed without removing your make-up after a long day when your energy is zapped but your skin begs of you to resist the temptation.  Going to bed with your make-up on makes it nearly impossible for your skin to perform its nightly duties like natural sloughing, repair and regeneration. Remember that your skin has had a busy day too.  If you are good to your skin; your skin will be good to you!

Tuesday, April 14th, 2015

For those of you who have not been in the office lately or  do not receive our monthly electronic newsletter,  https://www.facebook.com/DrCastilloCosmeticPlasticSurgery/app_141428856257   you are missing out on Dr. Castillo’s BIG NEWS!!  So let me fill you in…Cosmetic Plastic Surgery 9/11/12

For anyone who has ever spent anytime with Dr. Castillo, I’m sure you’ve picked up on the idea that he may just be a bit an an over-achiever with his long list of impressive credentials, over 30 some years of achieving excellence in cosmetic surgery, Past-President of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, he holds not one, not two, but three board-certifications!  He has been involved in countless community service events, lectured around the world and spent years mentoring upcoming medical students, and is a published author, all while remaining an involved father of two, and grandfather. Did I mention he also holds the highest ranking possible as a commercial and private pilot?  All those achievements take some serious dedication and discipline!  That’s the kind of surgeon I want, wouldn’t you agree?

It seems he has been up to something once again!  Yet another accomplishment to announce on his long list.

Lush Simplicity Kit IMG_2054

In January, 2015, Dr. Castillo announced the development and arrival of his new, comprehensive,  medical-grade skincare line using only the most advanced, scientific based, proven-effective ingredients. His goal was to build a results oriented medical-grade skincare line that would provide real improvements for our patients at an affordable price point. All of the hard work has finally paid off and we are very proud to invite you to experience “Castillo MD Skin Science.”

I have been using different products from the line and couldn’t be more impressed with the rapid results and impressive improvements in my skin.  As the skincare specialist her at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center, I am so excited to be able to offer our skincare, laser resurfacing and surgical patients such as advanced line of effective skincare.  Castillo MD Skin Science is sure to build a loyal following of satisfied patients.  It certainly has me hooked!

Castillo MD Skin Science is a sophisticated, anti-aging product line that is optimized to improve a wide range of aging skin concerns including hyper pigmentation, lines, wrinkles, acne, rosacea, sun Tretinol Serum Neck Refining Therapydamage, poor texture, proper hydration and of course sun protection!

So why does Dr. Castillo believe medical-grade skincare is a better investment that over-the-counter skincare?

  • When professional or medical-grade products are made available to you through a licensed physician, the law allows for higher concentrations of active ingredients in those products.

Why is this important to you?

  • This means you are getting more effective formulations which can provide better, faster results and less disappointments from products that don’t work.
  • It also means that you receive an expert skin evaluation, with recommendations from a specially trained expert on creating a custom at home skincare regimen that is customized for your specific skin needs.  Skincare regimens are not meant to be a”cookie-cutter” system but are often treated that way over-the-counter.  At Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center we believe skincare regimens should be customized for the individual.  It is no different that needing eyeglasses.  Would you be happy wearing someone else’s prescription glasses?  Of course not. You could see a specialist who can offer a prescription the is customized just for you.  Why would you settle for anything less with your skincare?

Schedule your free skincare consultation to learn how “Castillo MD Skin Science” can help you achieve and maintain lasting improvements in the way your skin looks, acts & feels!  To learn more about the 28 specialty products available in both Dr. Castillo’s Savoy (Champaign-Urbana) and Bloomington locations visit his website at https://www.cosmeticplasticsurgery.com/cosmetic-surgery/skincare-products.cfm

Beautiful Skin…It’s NEVER Too Late

Monday, October 17th, 2011

Beautiful Skin

Awhile back, I was exiting the movie theater in Savoy, Illinois when I heard a woman’s voice.  “Excuse me, Miss.  Miss, excuse me.”  I turned around as a lady put her hand on my forearm and said “I’m sorry to bother you but I just had to tell you that you have beautiful skin.”  Clearly an extremely intelligent woman, she then turned to the gentleman whose arm I was on and said “and you sir, are very lucky!” I couldn’t have paid for a moment as fabulous as that one (lol)!  I still smile and giggle a little every time I think about it.

In that instant I knew that all the nights I had stayed up an extra five minutes taking care of my skin instead of just hopping into bed had paid off.   Just last week I was pushing my shopping cart through Meijer’s when a gentleman stopped, looked at me and said very sincerely, “you have the most beautiful skin.”  I blushed, thanked him for his compliment and went back to the mundane task of grocery shopping, only now with a lifted spirit and smile on my face.

So am I one of the “lucky” ones, just born with great skin?  I don’t think so.  I had thin, dry skin most of my life.  In fact, as far as luck goes, I don’t believe there is such a thing.  I have always believed that “luck” is the bi-product of being prepared.  It is about applying effort to those things that are important.  Having “beautiful” or healthy skin is no different.  I am telling you this story because I want you know that if you are bothered by the condition of your skin, it’s not too late to make an improvement that can really make you feel good about yourself.

There was a time when like many others, I wasn’t so nice to my skin.  As a child and teenager (when we are exposed to much of the sun damage that haunts us later in life) I spent most of my summers at the lake or outside riding horses or playing sports. I have two older sisters that I looked up to.  When I saw them putting baby oil on their skin to get the darkest tan, I followed right behind them.  I even followed them into the tanning salon.  I abused my skin, not knowing what kind of consequences it could cause later in life.  You know, dull, lifeless skin with pre-mature wrinkles, brown spots, broken blood vessels of the face, neck, chest and legs, sagging skin that makes us resemble our mother much earlier in life than we are ready for.   And let’s not forget…skin cancers.

Decades later, science has armed us with the knowledge of the kind of destruction sun exposure will cause.  We now know that most of the symptoms of aging skin (lines, wrinkles, broken blood vessels, brown spots, larger pores, rough texture, even freckles) are caused from sun damage not chronological aging.   We have had exciting advances in technology that allow us to now turn back time and correct some of sun damage we are marked with.  Thank you science!

So how did I change my once dull, lifeless, flaking skin into skin that makes complete strangers feel compelled to stop me just to tell me I have beautiful skin?  I did it with diligence and patience.  I give my skin a few minutes every morning and every night and in return it has given me back years.  So much so that most of our patients would tell you they are shocked to find out I have a daughter who is a Freshmen is College.

First and most importantly, protect your skin from the sun by using a medical-grade, physical sunblock such as Tisilc 60 and limit your sun exposure.  I’m not saying you can never see the light of day. Enjoy spending time outdoors, hiking, skiing, biking etc., just take advantage of opportunities to seek shade, wear a nice hat and re-apply your sunblock. Protect your skin every single day, not just in the summer, not just when it’s hot, but 365 days a year.  For those of you who are reading this and are thinking “but I have to get some color on my face”…try applying a bronzer instead.

Second, depending on the condition of your skin, you may need a skin rejuvenation treatment. A qualified Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon such as G.D. Castillo M.D. can help you decide which choice is right for you.  For me, it was CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing of the face. This procedure took my skin to a whole other level, erasing lines, pigmentation, restoring collagen and smoothing out the surface of my skin to a point that it feels much like the skin of a new born baby.

Third, MAINTAINANCE! Say it with me,” MAIN-TAIN-ANCE!”  This is where consistency and dedication come in.   This will require daily applications of medical-grade skin care products and possibly an occasional microdermabrasion, chemical peel or other facial treatment when needed.  Apply your medical grade skincare products consistently, every morning and every night.  Be sure to follow the regimen your medical skincare specialist and cosmetic plastic surgeon design for you.  You must be patient!  Quality, scientifically proven skincare products need time to make real changes in your skin.

Now, of course as a Medical Skincare and Laser Specialist, I have an advantage. Without the knowledge I have gained about the right combination of medical- grade skincare products and treatments needed to accomplish results, I would be as frustrated as most of the men and women that walk into both the Savoy and Bloomington locations at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Skin Restoration and Laser Institute. The key to successful maintenance is applying the right combination of medical grade skincare and sticking with it.  Avoid skipping around from product to product. This action is sure to set you for failure.  Your skin needs consistent applications of scientifically proven effective medical grade skincare.

Many of our patients at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Clinic have expressed concern that it’s too late to improve their sun damaged, aging skin.   You can’t take back to hours and hours of sun exposure but your skin has an amazing ability to regenerate and repair itself with a little help from science, technology and professional experience. Most importantly, you don’t have to go on a mission of trial and error to discover how to obtain beautiful, radiant skin that make people stop you on the street.  The steps are laid out right here in this blog.

It’s NEVER too late.

Holiday Cash Back

I love the holidays; the food and aromas, the beautiful decorations, the social events, and the time with my family but it can also be so exhausting!  We tend to spread ourselves way too thin, taking care of everyone but ourselves. The next thing you know, you find yourself staring in the mirror, looking worn-out, trying to wish away dull skin, forehead lines, deep grooves between the eye brows or lines around the eyes just in time to walk into your next holiday gathering looking fabulous and radiant, as though you are not completely frazzled! Sound familiar?

If you could be granted a wish this holiday season, would you choose to look radiant and refreshed at all of your holiday gatherings, or keep you’re hard earned cash instead?  Hummm – decisions, decisions, decisions…

At Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Clinic, we don’t want you to have to choose.  This year Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Clinic is excited to announce that the manufacturers of Botox, Dysport, Juvederm, Perlane and Restylane are offering impressive rebates to assure you look and feel you’re best this holiday season.

The manufacturers products that relax facial lines such as Botox or Dysport are offering rebates of up to $50.00 per treatment!  You can save up to $75.00 on dermal fillers such as Juvederm, Perlane, and Restylane to plump the skin and lips, erasing and filling lines around the mouth , nasolabial folds, marionette lines and adding volume where needed.  This adds up to an even bigger savings for those of you who are already receiving discounts with your Cosmetic Plastic Surgery VIP membership!

Unfortunately, these impressive rebates are time limited.   Starting now, you can schedule an appointment at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Clinic in Savoy (217-359-7508) or Bloomington (309-662-0436) for Botox or Dysport, and / or a dermal filler to smooth out your skin and erase lines and wrinkles.  We will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the details of these special rebate offers at the time of your call.

Dr. Castillo and his staff wish you a wonderful holiday season.

Ask Our Expert – Tanning to Cover Sun Damage?

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

Ask Our Expert Blog

Q:  Now that summer is over, my tan is fading.   I have dark brown patches and spots on my face that are making me feel very self-conscious.  If I use a tanning bed through the winter months to stay tan, will it help hide these brown spots?

A:  Stop…  Back away from the phone…  Do not schedule a tanning appointment.  Covering up sun damage by getting more sun damage is never the answer.

First, understand that the UV radiation (exposure to the sun or a tanning bed) is the reason these unwelcome spots are appearing on your face in the first place.  Though tanning your skin may initially camouflage them, those spots will become darker and multiply very quickly. Not only that, but eventually these unwelcome visitors will bring friends in form of lines, wrinkles, broken blood vessels, and poor skin texture.  Your skin is giving you an initial visual warning.  It is saying “STOP abusing me or else!”  And believe me, “or else” means it will punish you by introducing you to lines, wrinkles, large pores, and rough texture next!”

Many people find themselves caught in the same viscous circle.  They develop sun damage.  Then to cover the sun damage, they sun tan. Then they develop more sun damage.  It isn’t until the sun damage is so bad that it can no longer be hidden, that people truly realize what they have done to their skin.  Your best bet is to give your skin the protection it is demanding and begin to correct the sun damage that is causing you to feel self-conscious.

So let’s talk about ways to correct your sun damage.  There are many options that will help you to some degree or another.  It is important to seek advice from someone who specializes in aging, sun damaged skin such as a Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon.  They will help you match the amount of sun damage you have to the appropriate treatment. Usually the less expensive options are less aggressive and therefore give less result or require multiple treatments.  If you are someone who is willing to be patient, some of the less aggressive options may work well for you.  I will start with the least invasive options and work up.

Topical skincare treatment:

1.      Avoid sun exposure as much as possible and protect your skin faithfully by applying a medical grade physical sunblock every single day of the year, not just when it is hot or sunny. (THIS IS A MUST NO MATTER WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING SOLUTIONS YOU CHOOSE) In both our Bloomington and Champaign-Urbana locations, we recommend TiSilc 60 medical grade sunblock.

2.      Use a prescription bleaching agent with retinol every night for 6 weeks.  Both of these will help lighten the brown spots over time but you will need to be patient.

3.     In addition, applying Vitamin C and E topically to the skin every morning may also improve your spots.

4. Talk with an experienced medical skincare specialist within a Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon’s office.  Ask her or him to build a medical-grade skincare program for you based your skin injuries. Remember that there are no magic creams out there but there are some scientific based medical skincare products that will make great improvements to your skin.  However, you must be faithful in applying them as directed.

Chemical Peels:

There are several formulations of strengths when it comes to chemical peels.  I suggest you seek an experienced cosmetic plastic surgeon to develop your chemical peel plan.  Chemical peels have a quantitative effect, so typically you would expect to have multiple peels. You need to protect your skin from UV radiation and use a physical sun block every day.

Approximate cost:  At Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Clinic chemical peels range from $50.00 to $175.00 each.

Intense Pulse Light (IPL) Treatments:

Intense Pulsed Light can improve both brown spots and redness.  You should plan on three to six treatments depending on the severity of your sun damage.  Expect redness and swelling for a few days following each treatment.  Your brown spots will get darker before they get lighter.  Then they will come to the surface and flake off.  Again you will need to protect your skin from UV radiation and use a physical sun block every day.

Approximate cost:  At Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Clinic, you can expect to pay $250.00 and up per IPL treatment depending on the location of the treatment area.

CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing:

This is typically the best treatment for sun damage in the form of brown spots, melasma, lines, wrinkles, and the break-down of collagen and elastin.  In most cases this is a one- time treatment. You will need to take about four days off from work or social activity as you will be swollen, red and your skin will peel between days three and five.  This option will give you the best non-ablative results available if preformed by an experienced laser practitioner.

Approximate cost:  At Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Clinic, for a first treatment you can expect to pay

Full face:  $2000.00                              Hands: $700.00                        Neck: $900.00

Chest:  $1900.00                                    Shoulders: $900.00                 Eyes only: $600.00

Upper & Lower lips:  $600.00            Upper or lower arms: $1800.00

Instant Wrinkle Reducers – Do They Really Work?

Monday, October 25th, 2010

ASK THE EXPERT:

Q:  I have seen advertisements for instant wrinkle reducers.  Is this a good investment?  Do they really work?

A:  I am sure that some of the over the counter products will reduce your wrinkles for a few hours.  They do this by acting as a plumper.  However, don’t be fooled by over-promising, over-the-counter skincare that swells the skin for an instant wrinkle reducer.  Remember, it is contracting and relaxing the elastic fibers of your skin over and over again.

Think of a new balloon.  What happens to that balloon after you have blown it up and let the air back out several times, expanding it and contracting it over and over again? The balloon material becomes loose and thin.  This doesn’t seem like a good solution to me.

Our experience at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Clinic has been that it is best to treat the condition with a scientifically proven-effective method rather than putting your skin at risk of further damage for a few hours of temporary correction.

ASK OUR EXPERT: ARE BOTOX AND JUVEDERM THE SAME TREATMENT?

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Derma fillers can be used to fill volume loss as seen here

Q: Are Botox and Juvederm the same treatment?

A: No. However, this is a good question and one we hear often in both our Bloomington and Savoy (Champaign–Urbana) Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Clinics. Botox Cosmetic ® https://www.cosmeticplasticsurgery.com/cosmetic-surgery/botox.cfm and Juvederm are both injections, but they are very different.
Botox Cosmetic ® is a neuro-muscular relaxant. It is used to relax over-active muscles, such as the vertical lines that can appear between the eyebrows, forehead lines and crow’s feet around the eyes. By injecting Botox into these problem areas it prevents the muscles from “creasing” the skin over and over which forms unwanted facial lines. An added benefit of using Botox Cosmetic ® repeatedly (every 3-6 months) is that over time it can re-train your motor memory to no longer make the expressions that created the lines in the first place.

Juvederm is classified as a dermal filler. There are several of dermal fillers available today (Radiesse, Restylane, Perlane, Sculptra…). Dermal fillers vary in thickness and longevity, as well as content. Though injecting dermal filler is not a new procedure, it is getting a lot of publicity these days. You may have heard the term “liquid facelift.” This refers to the use of dermal fillers to lift, fill, smooth or volumize an aging face. However, “liquid facelift” is a misleading title choice as a dermal filler will not achieve the type of results received with a facelift and is therefore deceptive. Dermal fillers such as Juvederm are used to replace or add volume. As we age, we lose facial fat volume and experience skin changes. Our once smooth, plump skin develops wrinkles and folds. By injecting dermal filler, Dr. Castillo can fill in or smooth away facial lines and restore volume. Dermal fillers are used to add volume to areas such as lips, lip lines, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, cheeks, even hands. Our patients like this treatment because they see immediate improvement.

Oh the “beauty” of science!
