Breast Asymmetry

Not All Breasts Are Created Equal

Breast asymmetry is quite common, though the degree and patient perception of it varies.  Often patients are not aware of their asymmetry, they just recognize that they are unhappy with the appearance of their breasts.  Frequently women have one breast that is larger than the other breast or nipple that is positioned lower than the other.  Patient’s often share their stories of frustrations when searching for clothing that will fit properly without accentuating the asymmetry and the continual distress it causes them.

If breast asymmetry is so common, why does it bother us females so much if our breasts are not perfectly symmetrical?  Maybe as women, we just haven’t had as many opportunities to compare our breasts to the breasts of the average women unlike say… women living in other countries, like maybe…France, where breasts seem to be on display. Maybe it’s because we torture ourselves by thinking our partner is comparing our breasts imperfections to the perfectly perky, perfectly shaped, perfectly sized, perfectly air brushed breasts in magazines.  Maybe it is because we remember what our breasts looked like before children. Maybe it’s because we just want to be the best self we can be. The list could go on indefinitely I’m sure. Unfortunately, there isn’t much comfort to be found in the idea that there are lots of women facing the same imperfections.

Fortunately, Dr. Castillo has decades of experience in dealing with and developing solutions for this very problem.  For those of you who have not had the pleasure on meeting G.D. Castillo, M.D., “as a surgeon (and an individual) he is a breath of fresh air” as quoted by one of our patients.  I must agree!  He is a truly gifted surgeon with a compassionate, understanding, engaging bedside manner. Dr. Castillo’s goal is your goal: to create beautiful breasts that look and feel exactly as you envisioned them.

At Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Clinic, we offer options to address each type of asymmetry concern.

1.     Breast augmentation – This procedure may involve inserting a breast implant in one or both breasts, depending on the individual patient’s needs.

2.     Liposuction – Many times liposuction of the larger breast can be used to simply equal out the volume / size of your breasts without breast implants.

3.     Breast Reduction – This cosmetic surgery procedure can be used to reduce the size of one or both breasts to create breast symmetry.

4.     Breast Lift (Mastopexy) – This breast surgery is used improve breast ptosis (sagging) in one or both breasts, reshaping the breasts to create beautiful symmetrical breasts.

5.     Nipple Reduction or Nipple Augmentation – This cosmetic procedure can be used to increase, decrease or equalize the size and shape of the nipple and give balance to the breasts.

6.     A combination of one or more of the above breast surgeries is sometimes needed to correct the asymmetry in its entirety.

Ask Our Expert – Mastopexy (Breast Lift)

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

POPULAR BREAST LIFT (MASTOPEXY) QUESTIONS:

1.     Where are the scars after a breast lift? Will I be able to wear bikinis and low v-neck tops or dresses after a Mastopexy? Yes.  The scars following a breast lift are located around the areolar complex and in the lower portion of the breast where they will be hidden by your swim suit or clothing.  Dr. Castillo’s patients also find that because of the higher position of the breast following a breast lift, they are able to wear many clothing options that they were unable to wear prior to the surgery.

2.     At what age can a Mastopexy be performed?

A Mastopexy can be performed at any time after the breasts are fully developed.

Typically, Dr. Castillo performs a Mastopexy to correct sagging breasts which usually does not occur before the mid-thirties. It is at this age that the breast tissues can begin to suffer the natural consequences of gravity.   However, many times after pregnancy and breast feeding, the breast becomes less firm and tends to sags, in which a breast lift may be needed much earlier in life.

3. Can I breast feed a baby after having a breast lift?

Yes.  The normal breast channels carrying the product of milk glands are undisturbed by this procedure and lactation should not be a problem following this procedure.

4.     Will my breasts feel natural after a breast lift?

Yes. At Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Clinic, G.D. Castillo, M.D. utilizes Mastopexy procedures to repositions the breast.  It does not change the consistency and / or feel of the breast tissue.

5. Will a breast lift make me look like I have breast implants?

No.  Although during the first few weeks of healing, your breasts may appear  more full on top, much like the look created by breast augmentation. This top fullness will resolve itself once the breast tissue relaxes.

6. Can Dr. Castillo decrease the size of my areolas at the time of a breast lift?

Yes.

7.     Does a Mastopexy require hospitalization after the procedure?

No.  All of our cosmetic surgeries, including Mastopexies, are performed in our on site surgical facility in Savoy, Illinois.  You will recover for approximately 1 1/2 hours after your surgery, and then you will be released to recover in the comforts of your own home without being exposed to many of the illnesses that one might be exposed to in a hospital. At Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Clinic, we are performing surgery only on healthy patients.

Ask Our Expert – Breast Augmentation

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

Ask The Expert:
Bloomington IL, Breast Augmentation:

Q: I wear a size 34 A bra. My breast size or lack of is something that affects me daily. I have difficulty wearing a variety of clothing styles and am self-conscious in a swim suit. At 29 years old, I do not want to continue fighting these issues. However, my friends are not supportive of my decision. How can I make them more comfortable with my decision?

A: Breasts are an important factor in how women feel about themselves. For many women, breasts are directly related to their sense of femininity. Having breasts that in some way make you feel less than adequate can change the way you relate both emotionally and intimately. This characteristic is quite normal to human nature and is not a sign of over-indulged vanity (though, I believe a little vanity is a positive thing).
Though having the support of your friends is extremely valuable, choosing to have breast augmentation is a very personal decision and one only you and your cosmetic surgeon can make together. After all, it is your body. You are the one who deals with the daily frustrations that your breast size is creating.
There are implant shape and size options to fit the desire of almost any women. You can choose breast implants that resemble the look you achieve when you wear a push up bra (high set, perky, round) or you can choose implants that look and feel so natural that it will be difficult for others to even notice that you have them. For women considering breast augmentation in our Champaign, Illinois surgical facility, Dr. Castillo uses a specialized minimal scar incision technique that makes it difficult to detect the scarring after a few months.
I would suggest making a consultation with a few cosmetic plastic surgeons. Once you have found one that you feel comfortable with, I believe you will be able to make the decision that is right for YOU.

Who Are Our Patients? The Average Citizen We See Every Day

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Q: What demographic represents the bulk of your patients?

A: The answer is surprising to many – the majority of our patients are comprised of the average citizen that you and I pass everyday on the street. A stereotype used to exist that relegated an elective procedure to the realm of celebrities or the very wealthy – that stereotype has become a thing of the past and rightly so.

Q: What do you mean by rightly so?

A: Well, the average person looks in the mirror everyday, and if we are fortunate enough to enjoy what “society” considers the norm reflected back at us, we often don’t realize how many people don’t share our good fortune.

For example, if a woman’s breasts are naturally equally pleasing in both size and shape, she may have never considered how common it is for this not to be the case for other women. Breasts, in particular, are a strong focal point for most women, and for the woman who has developed disproportionately, this can be emotionally devastating.

A woman suffering from one smaller tubular-shaped breast and one larger round-mounded breast doesn’t have the same experiences as a woman with breasts similar in size and shape. Every aspect of her life – both social and intimate, will be colored by this congenital deformity. Imagine shopping for bras in this situation or the discomfort in fun activities such as going to a swimming pool with your friends. Think of the distress of needing to camouflage this irregularity in both choosing and wearing your wedding dress. This would be incredibly limiting for those of us who take our physiques for granted.

A breast procedure can correct this situation and although an insurance company may consider the procedure elective and cosmetic, that doesn’t mean it’s not necessary for the mental health and well being of the patient.

This is just one example of many. Cosmetic procedures are termed such mainly because they are elective. These procedures have a very high satisfaction rate and most patients immediately comment on the effect on their quality of life. The value and necessity of these procedures is undeniable.

Cosmetic surgery has become more affordable for all and has remained economically stable. Breast augmentation pricing remains the same as it was ten years ago while regular medical care has gone up 140%.

ASK OUR EXPERT:How do I choose the implant size that is right for me?

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Q:  I am considering breast augmentation. How do I know which size implant I should chose?

A:  Making the decision about breast size is a very personal decision. If you have not already had a consultation with a reputable cosmetic plastic surgeon, I recommend that you talk with one. Your surgeon and his staff should be able to answer many of your questions about implants and sizes. They should be able to talk with you more about how to select the right sizing with your particular body shape while keeping your goals in mind. Here are 3 options that can help you make a visual decision about sizing.
OPTION #1:
The majority of surgeons use “the baggie of rice method,” although Dr. Castillo offers a much more realistic option for his patients in both the Savoy (Champaign – Urbana) and Bloomington offices. To utilize the at home baggie of rice method, you can put rice, oatmeal, or birdseed in a sandwich baggie. Do not use a zip lock baggie as they are too firm. (1 ? cups = 10 ounces or 1 ? cups = 12 ounces…) Most breast augmentations utilize between 9 – 14 ounces for each breast (270cc – 420cc per breast). You should probably start with 10 ounces then adjust as you prefer. Select a bra for the size you want to be. Put the filled baggies inside the unpadded bra. Once you find the size baggie you are comfortable with, you may want to wear it for a few hours, with different shirts, do some normal daily activities…this will help you decide if the size is truly comfortable.
OPTION #2:
In both our Savoy and Bloomington offices, Dr. Castillo provides the option of trying on professional sizer implants in the office. This option by far offers the most natural, realistic visual comparison.  We have a variety of sizes so that our patients can get a good idea of what their results will look like.
At the time of the consultation, we give the patient an unpadded bra. The patient can also bring one if she knows about what size she would like to be. I suggest that our patients bring 2 different style tops; one form-fitting, one loose fitting. This gives our patients a great feel for how each size can change their body appearance. Of course our specially training staff is available to personally assist each patient and answer any questions they may have. Our patients love this option.  I think they feel much more confident in their decision.
OPTION #3: NEW
Allergan, the makers of Natrelle Breast Implants, Botox, Juvederm and Latisse, just started offering an exclusive kit for women who are considering breast implants. You can order this kit for $45.00 on-line by going to Natrelle.com. The kit includes four sample implants (275cc, 325 cc, 375 cc, & a 425 cc), a bra and an educational DVD and booklet, plus a total of $170.00 in rebates! The rebates include:

I have viewed the DVD. I think it would be helpful for anyone who is considering breast implants. The DVD introduces you to a patient who has Natrelle breast implants as she shares her experience with her daughter who is now considering breast enhancement. You will view some before and after photos of breast augmentation. More importantly, the DVD takes you through a consultation so you know what to expect. I think this kit will be helpful in preparing you to ask the right questions when you are talking with your surgeon.

I would recommend using your own unpadded bra with the sample implants. The sample implants from this kit allow you to try them on with different pieces of clothing in the privacy of your own home. This will help you get a good idea of what size implants you will be comfortable with. In my opinion, they do not give near the realistic visual as the professional implants that we have in the office. The implant samples from the kit do not provide as smooth or realistic shape as our profession implant provide.  Therefore, even if you purchase the kit, I would still recommend taking advantage of the profession sizer fitting at our office.

If you are interested in getting further information on breast augmentation (breast enhancement) options, call our office to schedule a consultation with G.D. Castillo, M.D. at 217-359-7507 for the Savoy location (Champaign-Urbana area) or 309-662-0436 for the Bloomington, IL location.
