My Airbrush Tanning Experience

Tuesday, July 11th, 2017

Unless you’ve been avoiding television, magazines, newspapers and social media for the last decade, I think it’s safe to say you’ve heard that UV radiation from both sun exposure and tanning beds are known to cause pre-mature skin aging, skin cancer, even death.

Tanning beds are known carcinogens!

The three things that skincare patients will always here from me are:

  1. “If you do nothing else for yourself or for the health and beauty of your skin; wear medical grade, physical sunscreen every single day, 365 days a year, for the rest of your life.
  2. Re-apply your sunscreen often and generously.
  3. Avoid sun exposure whenever possible.”

If you’ve spent anytime in consultation with me at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center, then you know I am a proponent for healthy skin. I spend my days helping others turn their sun-damaged skin into a smooth, clear, healthy canvas featuring their natural skin tone, free of pigmentation with a high level of light reflectivity and smooth texture.

Signs of sun damaged skin: brown spots, lines, wrinkles, sagging, dullness, rough texture

UV radiation from both tanning beds and the sun will rob that natural beauty by leaving it’s unflattering signature behind in the form of unwanted pigmentation or brown spots, lines, wrinkles, sagging, broken vessels, facial redness, rough texture and sometimes cancerous skin lesions. These signs may not show up right away but if you are not protecting your skin, they will catch you off guard at some point, no matter your skin type.

Through the use of Castillo MD Skin Science skincare products, sun protection and in-office skin rejuvenation treatments, our patients are seeing for themselves that well cared-for, clear, even toned, smooth, radiant skin can be more beautiful than tanned skin and is worth protecting!

If you are one of those people who think tanned skin is more attractive than natural-toned skin, a spray tan is a way to accomplish that look without putting your skin’s health at risk. Many past sun worshipers are now searching for alternative ways to appear sun-kissed when they have a special event coming up. They frequently ask for recommendations for self-tanners or spray tans for upcoming weddings, vacations, and class reunions.

I decided to investigate to options of self-tanners on the market and spray tans available in our area. Truthfully, once I researched the self-tanners for at home use, I couldn’t bring myself to try them. It seemed WAY too complicated with lots of opportunity for error considering my inexperience! I didn’t want to risk being blotchy or streaked, or umpa-lumpa orange.

That left spray tan booths and airbrushed spray tans to consider. In recalling my single experience with a spray tan booth about 15 years ago, I was reminded why I never opted for another spray tan. I was in a spray booth, cold, naked and alone without professional direction. It is impossible to hold your breath the whole time, so breathing in some of the solution is unavoidable, unless maybe you’re a fish. As I gasped for a quick breath, I got a mouth full of spray tan solution! Not good! My “tan” was blotchy in areas, which may have been a result of improper exfoliation in certain areas were my skin was drier (between fingers, ankles, the underside of my writs) but also on my lower legs which was not expected :-(. So… I ruled out volunteering for a duplicate of that experience, even though I realize it’s quite possible booths have improved over the years.

Airbrush tan it is then! I spoke in depth with Kristen, the owned of Body Bronze in Champaign. I decided to try a professional airbrush spray tan instead. I liked that the spray is controlled by a technician, similar to being spray-painted. They can give you direction along the way, “turn this way, hold your breath, breath now…” which put my worries to ease. I did not ingest any mist.

The rooms were equipped with ventilation systems to remove the mist immediately. Kristen explained that their FDA-approved solutions are all gluten-free, paraben-free and non-comedogenic and come in different shades to meet the needs of each individual. Together we determined that the sun-kissed to light, quick dry application would best meet my goals.

It was a quick, easy, process, a little chilly. I was given a specific time to shower (which you will definitely want to factor in before making your appointment!) and away I went. I felt a little sticky afterwards and was alarmed (though Kristen warned me) by how dark I appeared as the solution was setting. She assured me that when I showered, the dark color would rinse off and it did. By morning, I had a nice, even sun-kissed glow just in time to catch my plane for Hawaii.

I was concerned about whether or not the tan would fade evenly as I would be on vacation for 10 days. Kristen recommended I take a small bottle of Body Blendz Touch-Up spray with me just in case. My tan faded quite evenly so I did not need to use it. However, it’s nice to know there is a touch-up spray available.

While I remain a firm believer that well cared for, protected, original skin tones (color) are most beautiful, it was fun to change things up and experience a sun-kissed glow for a few days.

Stay tuned to my blog as I will share the lessons I have learned during my adventure with spray tanning and discuss the things you should know before your next fake bake.

Sincerely,

The Characteristics of Beautiful Skin

Thursday, May 5th, 2016

While sitting in a small room in a Champaign office recently, I over-heard an elated young lady boasting about the beautiful diamond she received over the holiday. Her gushing excitement was infectious. I found myself feeling almost as excited as she, yet I couldn’t even see the diamond!

I then began to wonder “what it is that makes diamonds or other precious gems for that matter generate that type of admiration.” I would guess most of us regard diamonds as a thing of beauty… but why? What specifically is it that makes girls go gaga over diamonds? Is it the number of carats? Could it be the shape of the stone that is so enchanting?

To me, it is the clarity and color of the stone. I would much prefer a petite diamond with such superior color and clarity that it shimmers and dances in the light, allowing me can see every curve and every contour, to a cloudy, three carat diamond that lacks life and luster. Would you agree? Now, don’t get me wrong. I am absolutely a fan of big rocks. I’m not trying to fool anyone here. Size does matter! It just falls short without superior color and clarity.

So why am I even talking about diamonds in a skincare blog?

Well, the characteristics that make a diamond sparkle and radiate beauty are very similar to the characteristics of beautiful skin. I mean is there anyone out there who would not be flattered to have their skin compared to a radiant, flawless diamond? Just as clarity and color are mandatory characteristics of a beautiful diamond, clarity and color are also key factors in creating beautiful skin.

Achieving superior skin color means that your skin is free of brown spots, freckles, redness, broken vessels and melasma. Skin clarity refers to skin that is free of rough texture, flakes, dull skin, large pores, acne, keratoses and moles. Superior color and clarity can be achieved through treatments such as traditional CO2 Full Face Laser Resurfacing , CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing, IPL, medical grade bleaching agents such as Castillo MD Skin Science Skin Lightening Complex, medical microdermabrasion, chemical peels and medical grade skincare products.

I would say that most people who are bothered by facial aging are focused on wrinkles. When they look in the mirror, they see an aging face with a custom set of lines and wrinkles that have formed after years of abuse, mainly by sun exposure, and other factors. However, most often, removing wrinkles is only half the battle. It is the brown spots, broken vessels, rough texture and dull, flaking skin that create a less youthful appearance.

The concept of color and clarity is an important concept to understand. One must realize that if you treat only the lines and wrinkles of an aging face whether it be though a facelift, forehead lift, fat grafting, Botox or dermal filler such as Restylane Silk,  you are likely to find yourself feeling more like cubic zirconium than the real thing.

Here’s to wishing you the kind of admiration only superior color and clarity can generate.

Interview with Skin & Laser Specialist, Roxanne – Question #3

Tuesday, September 15th, 2015

Question: Why do people come to the skin rejuvenation suite at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery?

3057Roxanne: “Most men and women, even teens simply want to become a better version of themselves.

  • They may have a special occasion coming up like a wedding, vacation or new job.
  • They may want to learn more about how CO2 Micro-Fractional laser resurfacing can improve their lines, wrinkles, texture and brown spots to give them a fresher, more youthful look.3182014 101
  • Some are seeking one of our signature facials or microdermabrasion to relief stress and brighten their appearance while others are working on self-improvement with chemical peels, hair reduction or vein therapy.“
  • In January of this year, to support the services that the skin rejuvenation suite offers, Dr. Castillo introduced his medical-grade skincare line https://www.cosmeticplasticsurgery.com/cosmetic-surgery/skincare-products.cfm   [contact-form][contact-field label=’Name’ type=’name’ required=’1’/][contact-field label=’Email’ type=’email’ required=’1’/][contact-field label=’Website’ type=’url’/][contact-field label=’Message’ type=’textarea’/][/contact-form]
  • The new skincare line has been a huge success and the results speak for themselves! This has brought a new sector of patients to us who are simply tired of being disappointed by empty promises made by over-the-counter skincare product lines. Trial sizes are available for most of the products so patients can try them out before purchasing a full size product. It is a nice benefit for the patient and they come back so excited, bursting with compliments about the skincare products they tried. As I always say, “you don’t need a cabinet full of skincare products, just the right products and knowledge to know the difference!”Microdermabrasion ScrubIMG_2054

LOOK YOUNGER WITH CO2 MICRO-FRACTIONAL LASER RESURFACING

Friday, May 22nd, 2015

Finding non-surgical ways to look younger isn’t exactly a novel idea, in fact it’s growing by leaps and bounds. Men, women, scientists and clinicians alike are seemingly on a constant search the latest answer to aging.I’m not sure I would put to much stock in most of the options being presented today but there are indeed a few good options for looking younger in situations when surgery is not necessary.

Although dermal filler may get all the media hype, I would say the biggest non-surgical development came about a few years back and is holding strong as the front-runner for non-surgical facial rejuvenation.

“COMICRO-FRACTIONAL LASER RESURFACING”

I have performed well over 500 COMicro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing procedures at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center in Champaign and have yet to have a patient who doesn’t walk away looking younger at their one week appointment and even younger yet at their 3 month appointment. It really is a tiny little bit of magic when it comes to looking younger fast.

CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing https://www.cosmeticplasticsurgery.com/cosmetic-surgery/laser-skin-rejuvenation.cfm is my favorite procedure to perform because I know I will put a smile back on my patient’s face when they look in the mirror and see a reflection looking back at them that they are happy with and can feel confident with. That makes what I do very rewarding on a personal and professional level.

CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing is a non-surgical treatment for:

•lines      •wrinkles               •blotchiness          •brown spots        •builds collagen and elastin

•acne scarring      •rough texture     •Aging skin           •dull, lifeless, sun damaged skin

You will notice more light reflectivity within a week after treatment which creates a softer, more radiant, youthful appearance. It even continues to create more collagen and elastin formation for up to year. That is not to say that you lose results after one year, I’m saying that the treatment actually continues to produce more and more results for up to a year. Now that’s a treatment that keeps on giving!

The beauty of this treatment (sorry, no pun intended) is that BOTH the epidermis (outer layer of skin) and the dermis (middle layer of skin) are treated and affected at the same. The epidermis is where the damaged, color producing cells are located that are responsible for the unwanted appearance of brown spots and tone changes. The dermis is made of elastin and collagen which provides the skin with structure; in other words, they make up the skins pliability, strength, form… When sun exposure and natural aging compromise the dermis; collagen and elastin break down and those dreaded lines and wrinkles start to form.

CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing is performed while you are awake in the privacy and comfort of Dr. Castillo’s state-of-the-art skincare and laser rejuvenation suite. Most patients are ready to re-apply cosmetics with in about four days after treatment. Some more aggressive treatments may take a few days longer.

If you are thinking about non-surgical facial (or body) rejuvenation for any of the above signs of aging, I would definitely recommend considering CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing. I think you will find that you get a great return on your investment!

The Pregnancy Mask

Wednesday, October 31st, 2012

ASK OUR EXPERTS:

Q:  I developed Melasma on my upper lip while I was pregnant.  It’s been months and it is still there.  What can I do?

Over-production of melanin is also stimulated by UV radiation which makes it a complex issue that is difficult to treat, because your body has already kicked melanin production into over-drive and that is compounded further by recurring stimulation from UV rays. Sometimes Melasma will go away after pregnancy or lighten enough to cover the discoloration with cosmetics but unfortunately it often returns with additional pregnancies, hormonal changes and sun exposure.  The good news is there are treatment options that offer hope.

It is important for you to understand that sun is your ENEMY and it will remain your greatest nemeses. Melasma is a chronic condition.  There is no magic cream that will guarantee to banish it forever. I find that Melasma is one of the most difficult skin issues that we treat at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Skin Rejuvenation and Laser Institute.  It is frustrating for both myself and my patients.  Therefore, I want to express the importance having realistic expectation before you decide if or which treatment option is right for you.

There are a few things you can try to improve your Melasma.  The first and most important one is simply applying medical-grade physical sunscreen with either micronized Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide every day, 365 days a year, without fail. You can get this from a dermatologist or plastic surgeon like Dr. Castillo. Avoid trying to sneak by with just the SPF of 15 that is in your make-up or moisturizer, it won’t cut it.  Because even the best sunscreen cannot block all UV radiation, other protection should also be used such as a wide-brimmed hat or umbrella. There is no such thing as “water-proof” sunscreen, only “water-resistant” sunscreen so if you are sweating or swimming you will need to re-apply every 80 minutes.

Prescription Bleaching creams, which I prefer to call “lightening” creams can also be helpful. They are used initially on only a short term basis but can be repeated in the future as a form of maintenance. You must be very faithful to your sunscreen regimen with using lightening agents.

If changing your oral contraception or hormonal therapy is not an option, and you haven’t gotten the type of improvement you desire then it may be time to consider more aggressive treatment options.  At Cosmetic Plastic Surgery we find the most success using CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing in combination with a lightening agent, medical grade sunscreen and sun avoidance. Other treatment options may include series of medical grade peels or IPL treatments.  Again, sun is your ENEMY.  It can very rapidly undo any successful treatment with sun exposure.

Yours Truly,

Ask Our Expert – Tanning to Cover Sun Damage?

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

Ask Our Expert Blog

Q:  Now that summer is over, my tan is fading.   I have dark brown patches and spots on my face that are making me feel very self-conscious.  If I use a tanning bed through the winter months to stay tan, will it help hide these brown spots?

A:  Stop…  Back away from the phone…  Do not schedule a tanning appointment.  Covering up sun damage by getting more sun damage is never the answer.

First, understand that the UV radiation (exposure to the sun or a tanning bed) is the reason these unwelcome spots are appearing on your face in the first place.  Though tanning your skin may initially camouflage them, those spots will become darker and multiply very quickly. Not only that, but eventually these unwelcome visitors will bring friends in form of lines, wrinkles, broken blood vessels, and poor skin texture.  Your skin is giving you an initial visual warning.  It is saying “STOP abusing me or else!”  And believe me, “or else” means it will punish you by introducing you to lines, wrinkles, large pores, and rough texture next!”

Many people find themselves caught in the same viscous circle.  They develop sun damage.  Then to cover the sun damage, they sun tan. Then they develop more sun damage.  It isn’t until the sun damage is so bad that it can no longer be hidden, that people truly realize what they have done to their skin.  Your best bet is to give your skin the protection it is demanding and begin to correct the sun damage that is causing you to feel self-conscious.

So let’s talk about ways to correct your sun damage.  There are many options that will help you to some degree or another.  It is important to seek advice from someone who specializes in aging, sun damaged skin such as a Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon.  They will help you match the amount of sun damage you have to the appropriate treatment. Usually the less expensive options are less aggressive and therefore give less result or require multiple treatments.  If you are someone who is willing to be patient, some of the less aggressive options may work well for you.  I will start with the least invasive options and work up.

Topical skincare treatment:

1.      Avoid sun exposure as much as possible and protect your skin faithfully by applying a medical grade physical sunblock every single day of the year, not just when it is hot or sunny. (THIS IS A MUST NO MATTER WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING SOLUTIONS YOU CHOOSE) In both our Bloomington and Champaign-Urbana locations, we recommend TiSilc 60 medical grade sunblock.

2.      Use a prescription bleaching agent with retinol every night for 6 weeks.  Both of these will help lighten the brown spots over time but you will need to be patient.

3.     In addition, applying Vitamin C and E topically to the skin every morning may also improve your spots.

4. Talk with an experienced medical skincare specialist within a Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon’s office.  Ask her or him to build a medical-grade skincare program for you based your skin injuries. Remember that there are no magic creams out there but there are some scientific based medical skincare products that will make great improvements to your skin.  However, you must be faithful in applying them as directed.

Chemical Peels:

There are several formulations of strengths when it comes to chemical peels.  I suggest you seek an experienced cosmetic plastic surgeon to develop your chemical peel plan.  Chemical peels have a quantitative effect, so typically you would expect to have multiple peels. You need to protect your skin from UV radiation and use a physical sun block every day.

Approximate cost:  At Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Clinic chemical peels range from $50.00 to $175.00 each.

Intense Pulse Light (IPL) Treatments:

Intense Pulsed Light can improve both brown spots and redness.  You should plan on three to six treatments depending on the severity of your sun damage.  Expect redness and swelling for a few days following each treatment.  Your brown spots will get darker before they get lighter.  Then they will come to the surface and flake off.  Again you will need to protect your skin from UV radiation and use a physical sun block every day.

Approximate cost:  At Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Clinic, you can expect to pay $250.00 and up per IPL treatment depending on the location of the treatment area.

CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing:

This is typically the best treatment for sun damage in the form of brown spots, melasma, lines, wrinkles, and the break-down of collagen and elastin.  In most cases this is a one- time treatment. You will need to take about four days off from work or social activity as you will be swollen, red and your skin will peel between days three and five.  This option will give you the best non-ablative results available if preformed by an experienced laser practitioner.

Approximate cost:  At Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Clinic, for a first treatment you can expect to pay

Full face:  $2000.00                              Hands: $700.00                        Neck: $900.00

Chest:  $1900.00                                    Shoulders: $900.00                 Eyes only: $600.00

Upper & Lower lips:  $600.00            Upper or lower arms: $1800.00

ASK OUR EXPERT: Anti-Aging Treatments for Hands

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Q:  Do you offer anti-aging treatments for hands at Dr. Castillo’s Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Skin Restoration and Laser Institute?

A:  When it comes to trying to conceal our age, hands can be a dead give-a-way.  Brown spots, “age spots”, loose skin, and loss of fat can all be contributing factors of aging hands.  So often we protect our face or improve the appearance of aging facial skin but we forget about our hands, and our neck and chest for that matter. Think of all the hours spent over a lifetime with your hands on the steering wheel of a car while the sun is beating down on them.   Do you apply UVA/UVB sun block with an SPF of 45 or higher to your hands each day; winter, spring summer, fall?

I have a few of recommendations for improving the appearance of aging hands.

  1. The first and most important recommendation is to apply a UVA/UVB physical sun block with SPF of 45 of higher to your hands each day.  Because incidental sun is responsible for a large percentage of skin cancer and aging it is imperative to use sun block 365 days a year.   Using sun block on your hands daily will help prevent melanocytes from becoming over-active, leaving brown spots on your skin.
  2. CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser resurfacing removes brown spots, builds new collagen and improves loose, sagging, crepy skin to restore your hands to a more youthful appearance.   This is typically a one- time treatment and will provide the best corrective results.  A prescription skin lightening agent may also be used to pre-treat brown spots in conjunction with this treatment.
  3. IPL (Intense Pulse Light) can be used to improve brown spots and redness.  It is not likely to improve loose, sagging skin however.  This procedure typically requires 3-6 treatments.  Again a prescription skin lightening agent may be used as a pre-treatment in conjunction with this procedure.  I would not recommend this treatment for skin types IV and higher.
  4. Dermal fillers such as Radiesse can be used to increase volume if fat loss has occurred.  This option offers immediate, long-term effects in a single treatment.  It also works well in conjuction with any of the above mentioned options.
  5. Wear gloves when driving.  Remember that your hands get a lot of UV radiation while perched on the steering wheel of your vehicle.
  6. You’re at home skincare regimen should include a minimum of exfoliation, hydration and sun protection.
