Ask Our Expert: Absolutely Everything You Need To Kow About Retin-A Skincare

Friday, July 20th, 2018

RetinA postQ:   My dermatologists gave me a prescription for Retin-A, but after a few days my skin became very red and irritated.   My Doctor explained that several weeks of skin irritation is often just par for the course when using Retin-A.  He asked me to try applying it every other night instead of every night, to be patient and that eventually the irritation would resolve itself.  I stopped using the Retin-A because the irritation was worse than my aging skin.   Is there anything else I can do?

A:  I am happy to report – YES!  Our patients have found success with a few simple adjustments to the way they apply their Retin-A, Renova, Tretinion, etc.

1.  After you cleanse your face, pat it dry and wait at least 15 minutes (to assure your skin is completely dry) before applying your Retin-A.

2. Apply a pea size amount.  This is typically all you need for the entire face. Remember that more is not better in this case.

3. Avoid combining other exfoliating or skin regenerating products like glycolic acids, with Retin-A, at least until your skin is able to easily tolerate the Retin-A.

4. Always apply a moisturizer on top of your Retin-A.  This is a very important step in the success of your regimen so resist skipping it. (If you find that you are still experiencing dry, irritated skin after trying all of the suggestions here,  you can try mixing your moisturizer and Retin-A together as this will reduce its potency. )

5. Begin applying your Retin-A every third night.  As your skin tolerates the Retin-A, increase use to every other night, then every night.

6. Remember that Retin-A and like products will cause increased sensitivity to the sun.  Therefore Retin-A should only be applied at night only, never during the day.  Wear a medical grade broad-spectrum suncreen every day, re-apply the sunscreen when needed and avoid excessive sun exposure.

If despite all of the above suggestions, you find that you are still unable to tolerate Retin-A, you may want to consider medical microdermabrasion.  It is a pain-free, even relaxing way to keep your skin well exfoliated and looking fresh.  For more information on medical microdermabrasion visit Dr. Castillo’s website.

Interview With Dr. G.D. Castillo – Part One

Q: It’s obvious that you love the field of Cosmetic Surgery? What makes it so meaningful to you?

Dr. Castillo: “I enjoy  Cosmetic Plastic Surgery for many reasons:

Performing surgery is energizing. It appeals to some of my most basic characteristics. I’m a problem solver. I have a strong need to work with both my hands and my head on a daily basis. I love challenges. I’ve been accused of being a frustrated architect, always looking for ways to change and improve any structure. I have a strong connection to visual arts and the beauty of form: human or otherwise.

Performing Cosmetic Plastic Surgery gives me the chance to perform surgery on every area of the body not just one. If offers an incredible variety in the types of surgeries I perform.

Patients often present with anatomy than is a little different or other challenges that will not be found in a textbook. I have to rely on my experience and knowledge to solve the problem and help them reach their goal. I find it very gratifying to help a patient with a problem that has prevented them from the freedom of fully enjoying and embracing life.”

Q: Your world renowned credentials are very impressive, including teaching appointments all over the world so why did you choose to practice in the Champaign– Urbana area?

Dr. Castillo: “I was appointed to teach at the University Of Illinois Medical Circle Campus in Chicago. I felt that Champaign-Urbana was a solid community to raise my children in. I like the atmosphere, the people, and have built many meaningful relationships in Central Illinois.”

Q: How would you describe your staff?

Dr. Castillo: “They are accomplished people pleasers who understand their jobs well.”

Q: Have you practiced any other forms of medicine besides cosmetic surgery?

Dr. Castillo: Initially my practice was focused on cancer surgery along with cosmetic surgery. There was obviously no competition as to which one would win my heart. I have focused exclusively on cosmetic surgery since 1983 and I wake up loving what I do every day.”

Q: What type of music do you listen to in O.R.?

Dr. Castillo: “I typically listen to soothing music like piano, soft jazz, classical or or spa.”

Q: In which areas do you feel your practice excels in, above other cosmetic surgery practices?

Dr. Castillo:

  • “Our focus on safety, our desire to understand patient goals and our commitment to deliver the results our patients desire.”
  • “We are dedicated to making sure that each patient is educated about the procedure and what the can expect every step of the way.”
  • “I’m really proud of my staff.  It is a great group of genuine people. They are knowledgeable and dedicated to making sure that every patient has the best experience possible.”

Q: What are the most challenging parts of your everyday practice?

Dr. Castillo: Each patient’s idea of improvement and goals are personal. I need to understand each individual’s story, desires and goals to deliver the best results I can. It’s my job to listen and understand what they really want out of this experience with Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center and translate that into the best outcome for them.”

Q: What are the best moments that make it all worthwhile?

Dr. Castillo: Smiling patients. Knowing that I have in some small way, helped them with a problem that they would not be able to correct themselves.”
