How Can I Protect Myself From Melanoma?

Thursday, April 29th, 2021

If we have learned anything over the past year, living life “unprotected” can have serious consequences.  Since the pandemic has decreased our social options, many of us are spending more time than usual outside; this means more opportunity for sun exposure.  With the potential for removing masks in the very near future, I expect the time outside to continue to increase as we are able to loosen the social reins. It’s important to think ahead about protecting our skin from UV rays.  Skipping this simple step will not only cause pre-mature skin aging but can also lead to a devastating diagnoses of Melanoma.

Use multiple tools to help decrease sun exposure like applying and re-applying broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen every 2 hours, seeking shade, wearing a wide-brim UV protected sun hat and sunglasses, and limiting high-sun exposure time because it’s easy to over-look your next sunscreen application and end up with unintended sun exposure, especially when you are working outside or  having a great time with friends.  Did you know, according to the CDC, the occurrence of melanoma has doubled within the past three decades in the United States? One person now dies of melanoma every hour of every day.

May is Melanoma Awareness Month. Melanoma Month was put into place to encourage efforts to increase awareness about melanoma, the dangers of UV exposure, how to identify suspicious skin changes, and how to protect yourself and your family. UV exposure cannot only cause pre-mature aging such as wrinkles, lines, rough, uneven texture, brown spots and spider veins, but it primarily responsible for all forms of skin cancer.

What is Melanoma?

Melanoma is the most-deadly form of skin cancer.  It develops in pigment producing cells called melanocytes. While basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are more common forms of skin cancer, melanoma takes more lives because it can quickly spread to other organ if it is not diagnosed and treated in the early stages.

What does melanoma look like? What should I look for?

  1. A spot, lesion, bump or mole that becomes painful, tender, itchy, or bleeds and doesn’t heal.
  2. Visual changes on the skin such as shape, color, size, flaking or bleeding of a new or existing spot.
  3. A spot, lesion, bump or mole that looks shiny, waxy or pale in color.
  4. Red bumps that become crusty and / or bleed.
  5. Red, flat spot that has a rough texture, is dry or scaly.
  6. One half of a mole or a pigmented spot that is an uneven shape (asymmetrical) or has irregular or ill-defined borders.

***This is just a list of SOME of the signs of melanoma, but it could appear differently on a case to case basis. See your doctor with any suspicious signs.

Which factors can put me at a higher risk for melanoma?

  1. Sun / UV exposure – Skin cancers are mostly the result of UV exposure, that includes both sun exposure and UV exposure from tanning beds and other tanning devices.
  2. Family history – If you have a family history of skin cancer, visit your dermatologist for frequent skin checks.
  3. Skin type – while skin cancers are diagnosed much more frequently in lighter skin types, it often proves more deadly in darker skin types as the signs of skin cancer often do not appear on dark skin types until the later metastatic stages.

How can I protect myself from melanoma?

  1. Make UV protection a priority! Apply a broad-spectrum, UVA/UVB physical sunscreen generously every day of the year. Re-apply every two hours as needed when exposed. If you are swimming or sweating, re-apply every 80 minutes. Be generous with your sunscreen applications.  It takes one shot glass of sunscreen to cover the average body appropriately.
  2. LIMIT your sun exposure time. Applying sunscreen is not meant to be a free ticket to all day exposure.
  3. Wear GOOD UV protective sunglasses! UV exposure has also been linked to cataracts and other eye conditions.
  4. Wear a wide-brimmed, UV protected sun hat and seek shade.
  5. Wear UV protective clothing.
  6. Avoid sun exposure between 11am-3pm.
  7. Do frequent self-checks and visit your dermatologist with any suspicious changes.

Help us improve community knowledge about the dangers of UV radiation and decrease the number of lives effected or lost to melanoma by sharing this post on your social media platforms and sharing this knowledge with your friends and family.

Want To Know What To Expect During Your Comprehensive Microdermabrasion Consultation?

Wednesday, February 12th, 2020

When you arrive to your consultation, you will be greeted by our patient coordinator and asked to fill out a brief form regarding your skin.  It will cover topics such as your skin type, current medications, allergies or sensitivities, past skin treatment history, and your current skincare regimen.

Then you will meet with me for a full skin evaluation. We will discuss your skincare concerns, current regimen and your goals.  We will then determine whether or not you are a good candidate for microdermabrasion.  Microdermabrasion is often a good choice for those with minimal to moderate aging changes, rough texture, lines, blotchy skin tones, or minimal acne scarring, for those who want improvements in the way their skin looks and feels but do not want a more invasive treatment or those who have a busy schedule that does not allow for down time, and for those want to maintain their skin after having a surgical and laser procedure.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions.  We want you to have all the information you need to make an educated decision. Once the evaluation is completed, if microdermabrasion is not an appropriate treatment option for you, other treatment alternatives may be recommended instead.

If it is determined that you are a good candidate for microdermabrasion, we will review the benefits, risks, expected out-come and contra-indications.  Should you decide to move forward, we will create a treatment plan. The plan will include the number of treatments anticipated and how far apart you should schedule each treatment.  You will also leave with a formal, written cost quotation.

We will also discuss your current at home skincare regimen, if you have one.  We will look at which ones will enhance your results and which ones we may want to discontinue.  Maximum results are obtained by consistently and simultaneously participating in an at-home medical grade skincare program.

What To Expect During Your Microdermabrasion Treatment:

Your appointment will last 35-45 minutes. We will begin by reviewing the condition of your skin, any changes since your consultation and your at-home skincare program if you have already begun one.

We will begin treatment by cleansing your face. I will then physically exfoliate your skin with the diamond-tome wand.  As we progress further into your treatment plan, we may increase the abrasiveness of the exfoliating tip as your skin dictates. This is followed by a glycolic application.  You can expect some light tingling for 1-2 minutes. Then we finally reach everyone’s favorite part…the soothing oxygen-nutrient facial mist!  The treatment ends with an application of Dr. Castillo’s premier line of medical grade skincare products and mini-facial massage. You will leave the office feeling relaxing, refreshing and ready to face the world!

Depending on your treatment plan, you are likely to schedule the first 3-6 treatments 2 weeks apart if this is your first experience with microdermabrasion.  Our maintenance or monthly club members are more likely to seek treatment every 4-6 weeks.

Working as a team is the best way to support your results.  I am available to answer questions, deliver information and education as it pertains to your goals. I will routinely review and evaluate your treatment plan and perform effective, thorough in-office treatments.  Keeping your regularly scheduled appointments, consistently following an at-home skincare product regimen and limiting unprotected sun exposure will assure that we are both investing in the same goal of obtaining the best outcome possible.

Does It Hurt?

The old saying “no pain, no gain” does NOT apply here.  There is no pain involved in Diamond -tip type microdermabrasion.  You can feel a slight tugging of the skin due to suction, with abrasiveness similar to a buff puff.  You can feel a light tingle during the glycolic application and just might fall asleep during the mini facial massage.

What To Expect After Your Microdermabrasion Treatment:

Click here to learn more about BOTOX® in Illinois.

There is no-downtime after microdermabrasion. You will immediately notice that your skin feels smoother and looks refreshed. You may experience slight flushing of the skin for 10-30 minutes post treatment. As we increase the level of abrasiveness in future appointments, it can occasionally result in small cat-like scratches that will resolve quickly. Microdermabrasion is a quantitative procedure.  This means you will see more results after each treatment.

You can apply make-up and carry-out all of your normal activities immediately following your treatment. Microdermabrasion, like any exfoliating treatment will make your skin more sun sensitive for a few weeks.  Be sure to apply the recommended medical-grade, broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen daily.

Do You Know The Best Season for Your Cosmetic Surgery Procedure?

Wednesday, December 7th, 2016

Are you considering a facelift, tummy tuck, or another plastic surgery procedure? Many of Dr. G.D. Castillo’s patients in both his Champaign cosmetic surgery practices will often ask if there is a better time of the year is to have the particular surgery they are considering. Truthfully, most surgeries can be performed anytime of the year but each season does lend itself to certain advantages. Hopefully this blog post will give you some points to consider when choosing the best time for you and your lifestyle.

FALL:

Fall is known to be a time for change. The leaves change, colors change, temperatures change, daylight hours change, so why not make some changes of your own?

There are many advantages to having surgery during this time of year. The kids are back in school. Busy summer schedules and beach days have come to an end (at least here in the Midwest) and life is starting to get back into a more consistent routine after summer. The holidays are coming up and with a little planning you can have surgery and be healed with no remaining telltale signs all before your first holiday get-together.

lipo jeans to bigThere are also a few long holiday weekends like Columbus Day and Thanksgiving. This is a good time to have body contouring with liposculpture or even neck liposcultpure. Breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, and even mini-facelift procedures are possibilities over long weekends. It is usually cool enough to camouflage yourself with an over-sized shirts, turtlenecks or scarves.

The only real disadvantage to having plastic surgery this time of year is that you are heading into the holiday season. It you have a lot of pre-holiday prep work or demands, it might be more challenging.

WINTER:

Winter is typically a very popular time to have surgery and for good reason; it is generally a slower, more laid back time. You can extend time off from work by adding vacation days to the beginning or end of holiday time. For this reason, it’s an ideal time to have surgeries that take more than a long weekend to be presentable, like a facelift, forehead lift, eyelid surgery, fat transplant or rhinoplasty.

It is easier to hide out for a few days without friends and family getting suspicious of your absence. It’s a common time to be stuck at home with “the flu or a cold” for a few days. Since no one wants your flu or a cold, they are likely to stay away. 😉

Winter wardrobes make it easy to conceal post-surgical swelling and bruising of the face or body. Scarves, turtlenecks and cute winter hats make it easy to hide lady covered with scarfthe signs of a recent facelift or forehead lift. Big, comfy sweaters can hide slower movements that are necessary just after breast surgeries, tummy tucks, and body contouring. Since you will need to avoid sun exposure after surgeries like laser resurfacing, winter is also the easiest time to stay out of the sun.

I cannot really think of any disadvantages of having surgery in the winter, though winter sometimes creates procrastination and before you know it, it’s spring and you’re suddenly in a time crunch to meet your cosmetic goals.

SPRING:

Spring is probably the most motivating season. It’s a very popular season for 4562 smallscheduling liposuction, tummy tucks, breast surgery and mommy makeovers. Patients are looking ahead to late spring and summer and want to get their body in check before heading to the beach, going to class reunions, weddings, vacations, or just having less clothing to conceal their areas of concern. It is also a great time for those who couldn’t fit a facelift, brow lift, rhinoplasty into their winter schedule because you can still conceal with a big spring hat, scarf and sunglasses for the first few days if you have bruising or swelling to cover.

SUMMER:

Summer can be a more challenging time to have certain cosmetic surgery procedures, as it is more difficult to avoid sun exposure to lasered skin or new, exposed incisions. If you are a gardener, a golfer or work outside, summer may not be the best season to have laser surgery. Most surgeries will impinge on your summer activities, at least to some extent.

However, if your daily summer lifestyle doesn’t include spending lots of time summer-cute-hipster-beautyoutside and you are accustomed to protecting your skin from the sun depending on your lifestyle, if you’re someone who already restricts the amount of sun exposure you get, or if you are willing restrict the time you spend outside for awhile, it can be a good option.

If you have kids at home, summer is a good time to send them off to Grandma’s house or summer camp for a fun-filled week while you concentrate on your recovery. By the time they return, they will be none-the-wiser. Since most people are pretty busy during the summer months, it won’t be too suspicious if you disappear from your social scene for a week.

Procedures like breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, eyelid surgery and tummy tuck procedures are good summer surgery choices. If summer is not a good time for surgery but you want a more youthful look for all your summer events, consider BOTOX Cosmetic or dermal filler treatments, or facials and skincare to keep yourself looking fresh until fall.

I think James Taylor said it best when he sang “Winter, spring, summer, or fall…all you’ve got to do is call…”

Quality Facial Plastic Surgery Is Popular Now Then Ever Before!

Friday, January 15th, 2016

Orange isn’t the new black this season!  It looks like facial plastic surgery is now the new black, especially the facelift procedure in our Champaign-area office.

In the last few years, facial plastic surgery has gained a tremendous popularity. What’s more, it seems to be a very open topic. Patients, especially women, are no longer hiding the fact that they’ve had plastic surgery. Even among Dr. Castillo’s midwest conservative patients, it seems that “don’t ask, don’t tell” has changed to, “Hey, I just told my girlfriend about my facial plastic surgery experience, and she will be in your office next week for a consultation.” Over the past year, facelifts have become our most popular surgery. We are currently performing more facial plastic surgeries than breast augmentations!

So why has facial plastic surgery, such as facelift, neck lift and rhinoplasty, become the hot ticket? Why is facial plastic surgery more acceptable now than in the past? Why are more patients willing to share the very information about their patient status that we go to great lengths to keep confidential?

Baby Boomers Abound

Well, I’m not a behavioral expert, so I can only speculate. Of course, there is the fact that baby-boomers make up the largest segment of the population, and they fall within the age category for most facelifts. But I think the aging population is only a small part of the equation.

Be Your Best Self

I think that women are more empowered today than they were even 10-15 years ago. They hold high-powered positions in the workplace, they are often the highest earners in their families, and they are regarded as equals more than ever before. I think this power gives many women the voice to openly discuss and pursue the things that will improve their quality of life. They have a taste of what self-improvement can do for their lives, whether it’s using a personal exercise coach, opting for cosmetic dental work, changing their hair color, or getting a face lift. Instead of trying to hide their decisions, they are now speaking out to say, “I love my results, and I’m so happy I did this for myself!” They want to share their personal joy, and they’re willing to let their friends in on the secret so their friends can also reap the rewards of self-improvement.

Media Influence

We also have to consider the power of media. Plastic surgeons are frequently quoted in top magazines, discussing the latest advances in procedures and techniques. Celebrities are more open about their cosmetic procedures. Multiple TV shows focus on cosmetic surgery and take viewers through the process (though some are a little unrealistic for my taste).

Although not your typical plastic surgery case, Caitlyn Jenner brought much attention to cosmetic surgery and the changes it can accomplish. All of these factors make facial plastic surgery more relatable to the average person who just wants to look and feel their best. It shows us that there are numerous surgical and non-surgical options, and we can have some say on how we age and how we take care of our bodies, our health, our skin, and our overall appearance.

Natural-Looking Results

Dr. Castillo’s patients appreciate the natural, well-rested, and youthful look that he has built his reputation on. Patients often tell me that they are so amazed that no one has figured out that they had facial surgery (that’s the sign of really good surgery, by the way). Our patients’ friends just notice how great or well-rested they look and assume they have a new hair cut or mattress. Recently, I have had several patients share that they had no intention of telling anyone about their surgery or skin rejuvenation procedure. But after surgery, they were so thrilled with their results that they were eager to share their story with friends and say, “Yes, I had a facelift, and I’ll be happy to give you the name of my surgeon.”

How To Revive Your Skin After a Little R & R

Tuesday, August 19th, 2014

cosmetic plastic surgery, skin rejuvenation, medical spa champaign il, Kankakee, decatur Ahhhh vacation! There is nothing like a summer vacation to re-charge your body and mind and take a much-needed break from the demands of daily life.  Even though you return relaxed and ready to head back into the rat race, vacation often has the opposite effect on your skin.  I see a lot of concerned patients in the Skin Rejuvenation Suite at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center once they return from their summer vacation destination. Long flights and changes in climate can dehydrate your skin making it even more susceptible to sun damage and other environmental stressors.  Too much sun, too many sugary Pina Coladas on the beach, not enough exercise, or sunscreen and skipped skincare regimens may not help your case either.

So how can you revive your skin after a little R &R?

EXFOLIATE: Use an exfoliating cleansers and buff puff on your face, neck, décolleté to remove dry, dead skin cells that leave your skin looking dull and flaky.  Dead cells can even decrease the effectiveness of your skincare products.  Use a salt or sugar and coconut oil body scrub to exfoliate the rest of your body. After exfoliating, your skin will be ready for re-hydration.

As long as you are not sporting a sunburn, you might even consider scheduling a exfoliating microdermabrasion treatment at you local plastic surgeons office.  Within 30 minutes, your skin will look brighter and feel smoother. Dr. Castillo’s patient’s tell me that microdermabrasion in our office leaves them feeling so relaxed they feel like they have just a had a min-vacation.  You can even top off your treatment with a rejuvenating, hydration mask.

4311♦RE-HYRATE:  Apply an at home moisture mask to your face, neck, décolleté every two-three days for the first week after your vacation then follow with your moisturizer.  Apply coconut oil to the rest of your body.  If you are looking for a quicker fix than your home regimen can provide, Dr. Castillo or your local plastic surgeon will have effective solutions to boost your skin radiance.  ♦Increase your water consumption.

♦PROTECT: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect your skin from further damage.  Re-apply as needed.

**Remember to increase your water consumption, and consider investing in UV rated clothing and a wide-brimmed hat prior to your next trip.
