What Can I Do At Home To Reduce The Signs Of Aging?

Wednesday, July 28th, 2021

More than ever, skincare has become a booming. progressive industry!  Finally, we have entered a culture  or state of mind that says it’s okay to value ourselves,  to invest in ourselves.   I’m not talking about entitlement,  That’s a whole other kind of topic. I’m talking about self-care and self-respect.  On one hand, that’s great.  We are living longer but we don’t necessarily want to look like it, am I right? This boom has created a push to develop and (hopefully) improve the very products you need to keep your skin looking good for as long as possible.  Now, on the other hand, wow – the sheer number of options out there is over-whelming, and it can be a disappointment and costly lesson to try to figure out which products work and which products are just marketing hype.  How many of you have drawers full of  product disappointment?

An at-home skincare regimen can mean so many different things to different people.  During each new skincare evaluation, I ask my patient to tell me what they are currently doing for their skin.  The answers range from an over-the-top laundry list of products to absolutely nothing.  I have always believed that delivering age-reversing results for our patients is best accomplished through dedication to communication, teamwork and most of all, consistency. You can start small with a smart, simple, medical-grade, proven-effective skincare product regimen at-home and move forward if needed, as you become more comfortable.

So, what can you do at home to reduce the signs of aging, sun damage and improve your skin’s texture and tone?  I will review a few of my favorite at-home product categories that will help you do just that!

Before I dive into discussing each basic product category, the first thing I want to talk about is the principal reason our skin ages.  Can you guess it? I’ll give you a hint… is NOT our age itself… but rather recurring sun exposure from birth onward. Studies indicate that approximately 80% of our lifetime sun exposure comes from “incidental” sun exposure, not a day at the beach.  Incidental sun exposure refers the UV rays you catch while walking your dog or in my case…walking my cat, walking to your car, sitting in front of a window in your home or while driving etc.  That being said, if you are not applying and re-applying quality, broad-spectrum UVA/UBA sunscreen on a daily basis, then the rest is for not because unprotected sun exposure will speed up your aging process and lines, wrinkles, rough texture, dull skin are certainly on the horizon.

Any basic anti-aging skincare regimen should include four application categories, although in some cases we may be able to streamline it even further.  Now of course, depending on the severity of your skin damage and your goals, we would customize a regimen specifically for you and skin concerns, but this will give you some good general knowledge.

The categories in review are:

  1. Cleansers
  2. Transformation products
  3. Anti-aging moisturizers
  4. Protection:

Okay, so the first product category I typically recommend to fight the signs of aging and achieve glowing skin is a good cleanser.

  1. CLEANSE:

In general, I prefer facial cleansers that contain exfoliating enzymes, AHA’s, BHA’s, and certain botanical ingredients. These ingredients will help to break down the build-up of dead skin cells, bacteria, grime, and sebum.  They can also stimulate circulation and improve cellular turn-over; all good things when you are looking for that natural glow.

In the Castillo MD Skin Science Skincare line, I recommend one of the following cleaners depending on your skin type:

Advanced Enzyme Cleanser:

This cleanser can be used for dry, normal, oily, combo, acne sensitive skin types.  It is formulated to deliver a brighter, clearer complexion and encourages the healthy production of new skin cells. Papaya Enzymes and salicylic acid exfoliate dead cells, kill bacteria in pores and removes impurities and make-up without stripping the protective skin barrier.

Gentle Cleanser:

Gentle cleanser is for dry, normal, post-procedure, rosacea, sensitive skin types. It is formulated with botanical ingredients such as Clary Sage, Aloe, Cucumber Fruit, and Ginger Root. This cleanser will clean, condition and invigorate the skin, leaving it feeling soft, smooth and visibly younger looking without causing irritations. It is also a good choice for mature skin that is dry as aggressive cleansers can compromise the protective skin barrier even further.

  1. TRANSFORM:

This category refers to products that have a specific anti-aging job to do.  Transformation products might be used to reduce brown pigmentation, fight free-radicals, repair damaged DNA cells, brighten your complexion,  improve texture, reduce lines, wrinkles and large pores.  Depending on the skin concerns you may have, one of the following products might be recommended in your anti-aging at-home treatment plan.

Clear Skin Pads

These pre-soaked pads are a quick and simple way to deliver an at-home, anti-aging micro-peel to exfoliate and improve dull skin, rough texture and lines or clean out pores, correct acne and prevent future breakouts.  Clear Skin Pads soften and sooth acne-prone, inflamed skin while reducing irritations and redness with a botanically infused formula.  Contains Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Lactic Acid, and Yeast, Horse Chestnut, Ivy, Burdock, Olive, and Clary Sage Extracts.

Tretinol PM Serum

Beyond sunscreen, topical Vitamin A products (retinoids) such as Tretinol PM Serum are the most beneficial, proven-effective anti-aging topicals available.  Tretinol PM Serum stimulates cellular regeneration which improves tone, texture and hyperpigmentation. It reduces lines and wrinkles (who doesn’t love that)!  It is naturally derived, sulfate and paraben free and contains antioxidants.  This is an after dark product only.  You should not apply this product during the daytime as it can make you more sun sensitive and could increase your chances of developing unwanted pigmentation.  If you are going to use this product you should always wear a sunscreen during the day.  Vitamin A products generally have a reputation for being harsh at first.  However, Tretinol PM Serum is impressively gentle due to the product it’s silky emollient delivery system.

Antioxidant Serum:

This is a powerful combination of medical-grade Vitamin C (15% L-ascorbic acid), Vitamin E, ferulic acid and a peptide complex. It enhances collagen syntheses, which means you can expect firmer more supple skin.  Vitamin C is the ultimate skin brightener. Not only will it brighten dull, lifeless skin, but this antioxidant serum inhibits melanin production which helps reduce unwanted pigmentation and melasma,  leaving your skin clearer and luminous.  Antioxidant Serum neutralizes free radicals to protect the skin from cellular damage, resulting in healthier, more radiant skin inside and out! It even increases the broad-spectrum in sunscreen as it helps to fight UVA/UVB sun damage.  Vitamin C reduces sunburns, redness and irritation. It is a wonderful anti-inflammatory and increases your skin’s ability to produce collagen. This product can be used twice daily. It is formulated for dry, normal, oily, combo, acne sensitive skin types.

Pigment Reducer:

This is a recent addition to Dr. Castillo’s skincare line.  This is another “after dark” only product.  It is an advanced, multi-active formula designed for rapid and significant improvement in the appearance of unwanted pigmentation. Pigment Reducer features an innovating lightening complex combined with alpha-hydroxy acids and botanical extracts to maximize penetration and stimulate cell turn-over.  This technology interrupts the melanogenesis pathway at multiple points, resulting in visible reduction in brown spots and other pigmentation.

Microdermabrasion Scrub:

Microdermabrasion is a wonderful, inexpensive addition to almost any skincare regimen in need of exfoliation or resurfacing to improve rough texture and allow your smooth, natural glow to show through!  It gives your skin an instant little boost of radiance.  It smooths dull, dry skin by exfoliating away dead cells and debris from your skin’ surface. It allows your skincare products to penetrate more effectively and will improve the look of your make-up.  While I am focused on faces to today, this product is also wonderful on your neck, chest, legs, feet, hands, lips, everywhere really! You will love how smooth your skin feels after using Castillo MD Skin Science Microdermabrasion Scrub .  This product is also beneficial to help maintain the result of an in-office microdermabrasion in between treatments.

  1. MOISTURIZERS:

For many patients, winter means drier skin. Not only does the outside air become drier but when you turn on the heat, our homes and vehicles become drier too and our skin suffers.  Without proper hydration and moisturization, skin can become dull, dry, flaky and irritated. Lines and wrinkles will become more apparent and cosmetics will not perform as well if your skin becomes dry.  You can avoid losing that supple, youthful appearance but using a moisturizer that is appropriate for your skin type.

Lush Replenishing Cream:

Lush Replenishing Cream is a patient favorite for sure! It is an elegant moisturizer that combines 5% Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) with barrier enhancing lipids. It is intended for dry, normal, sensitive skin types and those with occasional minor acne breakouts.  It is formulated to decrease the appearance of sun damage, texture, hyperpigmentation and lines. Because of its anti-bacterial properties and oil reducing factors, those with mild-acne breakouts may also benefits from this moisturizer.

Calmative Cream:

Calmative Cream is intended for dry, normal, combo, oily and sensitive skin types. It is fortified with Vitamin K, Sunflower Oil, and Sweat Almond Oil. It is a concentrated, restorative treatment moisturizer that helps reduce dark undereye circles and puffiness. It reduces the appearance of bruising, spider veins and broken capillaries. Calmative Cream is an excellent choice for those with conditions such as Rosacea who wish to reduce facial redness. Soothing, hydrating properties help skin retain its natural moisture. Calmative Cream combats symptoms of aging with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and calming emollients relieve redness and irritation associated with rosacea. It can be used for pre and post-treatment of fragile skin.

Revive Recovery Complex:

Revive Recovery Complex contains four different ceramides to restore the skin’s barrier function which helps the skin maintain its structure. Maintaining structure decreases water loss and increases factors which hydrate and protect the skin and aid in the skin’s recovery after exposure to stress. It is specially formulated with cactus and yeast extracts to significantly reduce irritation and redness caused by AHA’s, or  retinoids.  Appropriate for Dry, normal, combo, sensitive, and irritated, acne skin types.

  1. PROTECT:

The last step in this basic skincare routine as I mentioned earlier is the most important if your goal is to create or maintain a healthy, youthful appearance.

Sun Defense SPF 45

Sun Defense is designed to protect the skin from UVA / UBV and infrared radiation. It is a thin, lightweight, medical-grade, broad-spectrum sunscreen that is recommended for acne, oily, combo and sensitive skin types.  It absorbs quickly and contains high levels of Niacinamide along with Vitamin E, knotweed extract and hyaluronic acid to increase firmness and elasticity and reduce redness and blotchiness.

Physical Defense SPF 49

Physical Defense  is a very versatile, medical-grade, broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen. It is both gentle and light-weight.  It absorbs and dries quickly.  It offers our patients a more natural approach to sun protection by utilizing only chemical-free active ingredients.  Zinc Oxide & Titantium Dioxide sit on top of the skin to deflect UV radiation. Physical Defense SPF 49 creates a moisture barrier to stop the skin’s water from evaporating to help maintain hydration.  This sunscreen is beneficial for all skin types, especially those who are sensitive to over-the-counter chemical sunscreens. Barrier reef safe.

Prime Defense SPF 40:

If you love the feel of a good BB cream, you will love Prime Defense.  I always feel a little extra pampered when I am applying this product. It just feels so good!  Not only does it provide you with the necessary sun protection, but the pigments in this luxurious tinted sunscreen help to even out your skin tone.  Prime Defense contains protective anti-oxidants like Vitamin C & E, and Ferulic Acid Ester along with barrier protective lipids.  Prime Defense is a chemical-free sunscreen.  It even contains silicone polymers that provide a make-up primer base which leads to an even, smooth make-up application.

Surprisingly Nervous? What To Expect During Your Liposuction Consultation:

Wednesday, July 14th, 2021

Liposculpture basics:

Dr. Castillo has been sculpting bodies into more proportionate forms since the early 80’s.  In the hands of an expertly trained and experienced cosmetic plastic surgeon, body contouring via Liposculpture (Liposuction) can do more in a few hours to equalize the proportions of the body, then you may be able to do on your own in a lifetime.

While making healthy food choices and maintaining a regular exercise regimen is essential for maintaining trim body shape,  spot-reducing  disproportionate areas through those means, where fat tends to over-collect is nearly impossible to correct on your own.

Liposuction will remove excess fat that over-accumulates in certain areas, resulting in body bulges of the hips, waist, stomach, lateral and medial thighs, back, arms, even the neck and face.

Liposculpture is used best in one of two ways:

  1. For those with a relatively normal BMI, who have 2-5 problem areas they wish to have reduced, such as the hips, thighs, stomach and waist…
  2. For those individuals who have a higher than normal weight, volume reduction liposculpture is the procedure of choice. Here the main goal is to remove as much fat as possible, typically up to 6 quarts (1.5 gallons) of fat. Volume reduction liposuction can reduce and better equalize your over-all body shape. The best candidates for volume reduction liposuction would have a BMI of 34 or less.

 Your Consultation:

Dr. G.D. Castillo hosts consultations for body contouring in his Champaign (Savoy), Illinois office.  He has a full state-of-the-art, surgical center on-site as well.  You will be greeted by our patient coordinator as soon as you arrive. Then you will be escorted back to one of our consultation rooms where you will meet briefly with a member of our clinical staff.  You will be asked a few brief questions regarding your health history, including a list of your current medications, allergies, past surgeries etc.

You will then meet with Dr. Castillo to share your body contouring goals.  Once he has performed a brief body evaluation, he will discuss his recommendations and give you a detailed over-view of what to expect before, during and after your surgery.  You will also receive an all-inclusive cost quote so there are no surprises.  Don’t be shy about asking questions.  We want you to be well informed so that you can make the decision that is right for you. Most patients take some to think about the information they have received and call to schedule if they decide to move forward with the surgery, though we can certainly make all the arrangements for your pre-op appointment, surgery and post-op check ups before you leave the office if that works best for you. Once you have scheduled surgery, you will receive a surgical packet in the mail that will contain instructions on how to best prepare for upcoming surgery. Once you receive it, if you have any questions at all, just give a call.  We are always here to help.

Questions you might want answers to:

1.  Q: Will the fat Dr. Castillo removes come back?

A: That is a big – “FAT” —NO!  Of course, that does not mean it will prevent you from accumulating more fat in the future, typically in other areas, if you are not disciplined in your diet and exercise habits.

2.  Q: How long before I can return to an active lifestyle?

A: You can expect to be up and walking around the day of your surgery and walking a mile the days following surgery. Patients return to most forms of activity after the 1st week.  Running, jogging, high-impact aerobics and heavy lifting can typically be resumed after the 3rd week.

3.  Q: What effect, if any, will liposculpture have on the appearance of my skin?

A:  This ranges on a variety of factors such age, degree of sun damage, skin type, weight stability etc.  This is a question Dr. Castillo will be better able to address once he evaluates your skin.

4. Q: What is the scheduling time before surgery?

A:  Surgical availability can vary greatly so it is best to check with us once you have some dates in mind.   We will be happy to discuss our available dates in your consultation or by phone.  If you have a certain date or time frame in mind, it is best to schedule your consultation several weeks before in advance.

5. Q: What kind of results can I expect?

A:  It is important to us that we convey the type of results you can realistically expect.  Once Dr. Castillo evaluates you during your consultation, he will discuss your expected outcome.  While each patient outcome involves many factors,  you can typically expect to see a reduction  and sculpting of those tough bulges that you were unable to reduce yourself.

6. Q: Do you have before and after photos of your work?

A:  Dr. Castillo has been performing liposuction to improve the shape of male and female bodies since the 1980’s! He has a collection before and after photos of his work to help you the type of changes that he can make with this cosmetic surgery procedure.

A few things to consider when making the decision to have surgery are

  • 1.  Am I a good candidate?

•Good candidates for liposculpture are those who:

•Have been at a stable weight for at least 6 months

•Have realistic expectations. It should not be thought of as a “weight-loss” solution. Liposculpture is not meant to solve the issues of someone who is chronically over-weight. Making healthy life-style choices when it comes to eating right and exercising regularly will still be up to you.

•Those with a BMI of 34 or less.

2.  Am I choosing the best procedure to accomplish the results are am looking for?

•Is this the procedure Dr. Castillo recommended for me or did he recommend something different?

3.  Is Dr. Castillo, his facility and his staff right for you?

  • How much experience does Dr. have performing Liposculpture?
  • Did you feel comfortable with his explanation?
  • Did he answer your questions?
  • Did you finish the consult with a clear idea of expectations?
  • Was Dr. Castillo kind, professional and knowledgeable?
  • Was communication between you and Dr. Castillo / staff clear?
  • Was his staff friendly, knowledgeable and helpful?
  • Were you comfortable in the facility?

Important Note:  Traditional Liposuction / Liposculpture is still the GOLD STANDARD of treatment.  While there are many new non-surgical “fat reduction” treatments being marketed today, Dr. Castillo has elected not to offer those treatments to our patients.  We want what our patients want; the best outcome possible.  Unlike other non-surgical options, traditional liposuction/liposculpture offers consistent, smooth, predictable, superior results.  It is able to contour in 360 degrees known as 3-D or 3-dimensional body sculpting. Today there is simply no substitute for traditional liposculpture.

LOOK YOUNGER WITH CO2 MICRO-FRACTIONAL LASER RESURFACING

Sunday, February 2nd, 2020

Finding non-surgical ways to look younger isn’t exactly a novel idea, in fact it’s growing by leaps and bounds. Men, women, scientists and clinicians alike are seemingly on a constant search the latest answer to aging.I’m not sure I would put to much stock in most of the options being presented today but there are indeed a few good options for looking younger in situations when surgery is not necessary.

Although dermal filler may get all the media hype, I would say the biggest non-surgical development  came along over a decade ago and is holding strong as the front-runner for non-surgical facial rejuvenation.

“COMICRO-FRACTIONAL LASER RESURFACING”

I have performed well over 700 COMicro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing procedures at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center in Champaign and have yet to have a patient who doesn’t walk away looking younger at their one week appointment and even younger yet at their 3 month appointment. It really is a tiny little bit of magic when it comes to looking younger fast.

CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing is my favorite procedure to perform because I know I will put a smile back on my patient’s face when they look in the mirror and see a reflection looking back at them that they are happy with and can feel confident with. That makes what I do very rewarding on a personal and professional level.

CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing is a non-surgical treatment for:

•lines      •wrinkles               •blotchiness          •brown spots        •builds collagen

•acne scarring      •rough texture     •Aging skin           •dull, lifeless, sun damaged skin

You will notice more light reflectivity within a week after treatment which creates a softer, more radiant, youthful appearance. COMicro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing even continues to increase more collagen and elastin formation for up to year. That doesn’t mean that you lose results after one year, I’m saying that the treatment actually continues to produce more and more results for up to a year. Now that’s a treatment that keeps on giving!

The beauty of this treatment (sorry, no pun intended) is that BOTH the epidermis (outer layer of skin) and the dermis (middle layer of skin) can be treated and affected at the same. The epidermis is where the damaged, color producing cells are located that are responsible for the unwanted appearance of brown spots and tone changes. The dermis is made of elastin and collagen which provides the skin with structure; in other words, they make up the skins pliability, strength, form… When sun exposure and natural aging compromise the dermis; collagen and elastin break down and those dreaded lines and wrinkles start to form.

CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing is performed while you are awake in the privacy and comfort of Dr. Castillo’s state-of-the-art skincare and laser rejuvenation suite. It is available in two levels.  Level 1 is used for more superficial lines and brown spots while level 2 is a deeper, more extensive treatment used for those with more advanced signs of aging. Most patients are ready to re-apply cosmetics with in about four days after treatment. Some more aggressive treatments may take a few days longer.

If you are thinking about non-surgical facial or body rejuvenation for any of the above signs of aging, I would definitely recommend considering CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing. I think you will find that you get a great return on your investment!

Microdermabrasion

Thursday, January 16th, 2020

Microdermabrasion:

If you are feeling disenchanted with the texture and appearance of your skin, you might check with your local cosmetic plastic surgeon to see if they offer Microdermabrasion.  It can be a simple, even relaxing way to revitalize your complexion.

What is it?

Microdermabrasion is an in-office skin treatment that is used to treat sun-damaged skin, signs of aging, acne-prone skin, acne scarring, mild pigmentation, rough texture and lines. It increases circulation and exfoliates and removes the superficial layer of dry, dead skin cells, leaving your skin feeling smoother and looking brighter, much like a buff and polish process.

How does it work?

There are two basic types of microdermabrasion:

  1. Crystal Microdermabrasion – This is the original form of microdermabrasion. It was first used over in Europe and then came to the United States by the early 1990’s. In this version, crystals (usually made of aluminum oxide) are sprayed over the skin to exfoliate, then the crystals and skin cells are suctioned back through a tube suction system.

Personally, I am less of a fan of this type of microdermabrasion though it is widely used.  It can sting when the crystal hit the skin, making it a less enjoyable experience.  The crystals can be messy and there is potential for crystals ending up in places they should not. For those who are more sensitive, breathing in aluminum oxide can cause temporary breathing difficulties.

  1. Diamond Tome Microdermabrasion – This version utilizes interchangeable diamond-tip wands with varying degrees of abrasiveness to gently exfoliates and loosens the dead cells which are then suctioned away through a sterile vacuumed system. There is no debri or crystals making this system a healthy choice for both the operator and the patient.

If you have never had Microdermabrasion (or skin treatments such as Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing) then it is generally best performed in a series of treatments as each treatment results in more improvement. On average, you can anticipate having about 6 treatments to get your skin back in shape; of course, this depends on the condition of your skin to begin with.  Once your initial series is completed, you may want to consider a microdermabrasion treatment every 4-6 weeks to maintain your results. While microdermabrasion is most often used to treat the face, it can address skin concerns of the neck, chest, hands, arms, legs etc.

At Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center, we take microdermabrasion a few steps further. We offer “Medical Microdermabrasion,” which is a 5-step process.  We begin by exfoliating the skin with microdermabrasion with a Diamond-tome system as described above but we don’t stop there!  We follow with a glycolic application, an oxygen-nutrient mist, a mini facial massage, and finally an application of premium medical grade skincare products.

What improvements could I expect?

With recurring treatments, you can expect to see diminished appearance of lines, rough texture, and acne scarring.  You can expect a more even skin tone, fewer break-outs, a softer feel, and a radiant glow. Microdermabrasion can also help maximize the benefits of your at-home skincare product routine.

 Am I a good candidate?

Microdermabrasion is safe for all colors of skin.  It is best utilized for those with minimal to moderate lines, rough texture, dull, dry or lifeless skin, sun damage, clogged pores / black-heads, acne-prone skin, mild pigmentation concerns.  Microdermabrasion can also be an alternative solution for those with melasma (condition usually due to hormonal changes that results in brown or grey-brown patches on the skin) that becomes aggravated with other forms of treatment.

Those who have Rosacea and those who have active cold sores should avoid this treatment. Those who have waxed, had a chemical peel or other facials treatments should avoid microdermabrasion in the same area for a few weeks.

How will I look after my treatment?

The good news is there is no down time for this rejuvenating treatment.  Your skin may look slightly flushed 10-30 minutes after your treatment. When more advanced ranges of abrasiveness are used, it can result in cat like scratches that will resolve quickly.  Your skin will look and feel smoother after the first treatment and will continue to improve with each additional treatment. You can apply cosmetics right away.  You can return to work, go out for lunch, or carry out any of your daily activities immediately.

Microdermabrasion or exfoliation of any kind will make you skin more sun sensitive for a few weeks. Be sure to apply quality broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen daily and reapply as needed.

Expert Advice: When Should I Actually Clear Out And Replace My Make-Up?

Tuesday, July 16th, 2019

How Can I tell When It’s Time To Purge My Make-Up?

They say “all good things must come to an end,” and unfortunately, the shelf-life of your make-up is no exception. At some point, they expire either from age or contamination and it’s time to purge and replace. So how is one supposed to know how long to expect their make up to last?

Look on the product box or label for the POA (“period after opening”) symbol on your cosmetic. This symbol will tell you how long the product will last once you have opened it. The symbol is a cosmetic jar with an open lid. You will see a number and letter inside (6M, 12M, 24M) indicating whether it is good for 6 months, 12 months, 24 months etc.

If you don’t know the POA of a product, here are a few signs that it’s time to pitch a cosmetic:

  • It smells wonky
  • If it looks bumpy or chunky instead of smooth after you apply it.
  • If small, shiny or shimmery areas appear on the top of your powders (pressed powers, blush, eye shadows); this means oils from your skin, fingers, make-up brushes etc. have been transferred onto the surface of your powder. You can try to gently scrape it off but if it has penetrated very deep, it’s time to pitch it. It will be difficult to get a good application, as your makeup brushes will have a hard time picking up the makeup from its compact and distributing it evenly.
  • If you have had an eye infection or a cold sore.

There are a few keys to preserving most cosmetic items:

  1. Do not share your make up – with ANYONE. Seriously. No really, don’t do it. Sharing your makeup means sharing the millions of micro-organisms present on your skin! Ewe! Someone else’s micro-bacterial bits transferred to your skin (or vice versa) isn’t exactly a beauty booster and take it from someone who spent the last few days of her freshman year in an eye patch trying to pass her final exams half blind, an eye infection is no joke!
  2. Keep your finger out of them. Oils, debris and bacteria from your fingers can contaminate your makeup and shorten its shelf-life.
  3. Always use a clean brush. Avoid double-dipping your makeup brush once it has touched your skin. Cross-contamination from your make up brush into your makeup compact or container can cause you to have to pitch your product.
  • When applying liquid foundations, concealers or cream makeup, use spatula to remove the amount your will need and dab it on the back of your hand like a palette. You can double-dip your brush or use your finger as often as you like at that point.
  • I also recommend an anti-bacterial brush spritzer after each use. Then once a week, soak them in a glass of water with Shampoo (for brushes made of real hair) or gentle anti-bacterial soap for synthetic brushes. Then rub them with a little hair conditioner, rinse and let them dry.

The typical shelf-life times for most cosmetics:

3-4 months range-

  • Mascara / liquid eyeliner:

These are first on my list for good reason. You want to stick pretty close to the shelf-life dates these ones. They will go bad and are easily contaminated. When oxygen gets in the tubes, it dries out the product so try not to “pump” the wand, instead just rotate it. This will help you make it to the 3-4 month mark. In the event that you have any type of eye irritation or infection, conjunctivitis / sty, then boom! It goes straight in the trash! It’s contaminated and could re-infect you.

6 – 12 month range-

  • Cream blush, cream eye shadows:

Expect them to last 6-12 month unless you are dipping into these creams with your fingers, which can transplant the oils, debris and bacteria living on your skin into your makeup and shorten their shelf life.

12 -18 Month range-

  • Liquid Foundations & Concealers:
  • Pressed Powder
  • Lipsticks, Lip Liners,  Lip Gloss
  • Eye Liner Pencils

12 -24 Month range-

  • Powder Blush
  • Powder Eye Shadow

Happy Purging!

Sincerely,

Your Skincare Specialist

THE IMPORTANCE OF CLEANSING AT NIGHT

Tuesday, February 12th, 2019

I can’t tell you the number of men and women who have confessed to me that they often skip washing their face at night.  Noooo!  Pleeeease!  Must wash.

Aside from wearing sunscreen on a daily basis, washing your face at night is probably the most important step on the road to healthier skin.

Why:

Not to freak you out but seriously – it’s a dirty, dirty world out there.  Think of all of the bacteria, dirt, grime, environmental pollutants floating around in the air. Guess what – they land on your skin. They get stuck to your skin… embedded in your make-up. This happens to you daily, whether you realize it or not.

How many items do you touch every day: a grocery cart, money, door knobs…?  Again, you just made skin contact with bacteria, dirt, grime, pollutants and probably touched your face as some point. Am I right?  I know, that is not a pretty picture! At the end of the day how can unwashed skin appear pretty covered in all that environmental garb? Not to mention that if you didn’t wash your face before bed, you’ve just transferred all the bacteria, dirt, grime and pollutants to your pillow.  Yes, the very pillow you lay your sweet little head on every night.  Move over microbes! Make room for me!

Now – if the dirty world reality check wasn’t enough to convince you to wash your face every single night, well then… I guess… I’ll try harder…

Let’s talk about large pores:

Larger pores are one of the top concerns patients in our skincare suite want to address. Washing your face every single night is the best way to avoid large pore issues.  If you are not consistent with nighttime cleansing, your pores will get impacted with all the above mentioned grossness and form blackheads, whiteheads, full blown break outs, develop irritations and inflammation and lead to… you guessed it… larger pores.

A Better Canvas:

Like any good and prideful artist, you must start your painting with a pristine canvas! Having clean, smooth, well hydrated, and UV protected skin will make applying flawless make up so much easier!

So Why All The Emphasis On Cleansing At Night?

It’s simple really.

Even the most basic at-home skincare regimens require an application of moisturizer and maybe a retinoid or anti-aging product of some kind.  Even if you don’t wear make-up, your skin needs to be cleansed to remove the dead cells of the day so that your skincare products can penetrate effectively and do their intended job.  Your skin is working hard while you sleep.  It is a time of increased rejuvenation and cell renewal.

You must be on-board by now with consistent nightly cleansing, so let’s take a look at the proper way to cleanse at night.

I like facial cleansers (notice I did not say a bar of soap or facial wipes) that contain exfoliating enzymes, AHA’s, BHA’s, or certain botanicals to help break down the days build up.  I recommend massaging the cleanser into wet skin with your clean hands and then using a damp facial sponge, thin buff puff or textured facial cloth to clean away all the debris.  Rinse, then pat your skin dry.

Cleansing not only helps remove dead cells, bacteria and grime but it stimulates circulation and improves cells turnover. Yay! This means new fresh, sexy skin cells! Now you are ready for the rest of your skincare routine.

Real Results Are Achievable With Our Popular Gold-Standard Liposculpture

Friday, January 18th, 2019

There are many non-surgical modalities available to treat unwanted fat.  Unfortunately most of those non-surgical modalities lead patients down a lumpy path of disappointment.  The reality is that even if you are at a normal weight (BMI below 34)  excessive fat in areas such as the “love handles or hips, back, thighs, stomach, etc.  can make your body look disproportionate. The only way to accomplish real results is to actually remove quantifiable – measurable – fat.

If you find yourself in a consultation where someone suggests a type non-surgical modality rather than traditional liposuction or liposculpture, you may want to ask a simple question:  “How much fat will this procedure physically remove in terms of pounds or volume?”

During volume reduction liposuction, traditional liposculpture removes up to 6000 cc of fat at the time of the procedure! That is 13 pounds or 7 quarts or 1.8 gallons of fat!  These are typical numbers for volume reduction liposculpture performed at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center routinely. So yes, traditional liposculpture translates into being able to downsize in a significant way.

When considering if the latest way to “reduce” body fat is the best way to get the results you desire, ask the hard questions that are important to your outcome!

•How many pounds will you remove?

•How much volume will I loose?

•Will the results be smooth or lumpy?

•How many treatments will I need to achieve my desired results?

•What happens to the “melted fat?”  Are there future health concerns I should know about?

When asked “was worth it?”, more than 95% of our traditional liposculpture patients answered – ABSOLUTELY!

If you are looking for consistent, smooth, proportionate, REAL results consider choosing the “gold-standard” of body contouring – traditional liposculpture surgery.

POST-SURGICAL PAIN PUMPS

Friday, October 26th, 2018

A common reasons patients put off having the cosmetic surgery they have always dreams of is their concern about post-surgical pain. While pain is a valid concern, it doesn’t have to be. Today, we offer our patients a simple way to manage pain without pills (narcotics).

This technology is called a pain pump. While the majority of the surgeries we perform at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery do not results in much post-surgical pain, utilization of a pain pump can offer a more comfortable recovery period for those procedures that do or for those individuals who have a low pain threshold.

A pain pump is a simple, non-electrical device that delivers local anesthetic (numbing

medication) such as Marcaine, directly to the surgical site after your surgery, allowing you to recover from surgery without the typically discomfort.

The pain pump looks like a small ball or balloon and comes in it’s own strapped carrying case. Dr. Castillo connects the pain pump at the surgical site at the time of surgery. It will deliver medication to the surgical area slowly and continuously through tiny catheters for 3-4 days. As the patient, you do not have to do anything with the pain pump. It is automatically regulated; you just get to reap the rewards of steady relief!

The pain pump offers pain management without the side effects of traditional methods of pain control like oral pain medications. This means you can avoid the potential side effect that oral pain medications often cause such as:

      •mental fogginess             •drowsiness              •nausea             •vomiting             •dizziness            •constipation

For patients who are narcotic sensitive or allergic, this can be a first-rate alternative for pain management. Patients who elect to use pain pumps are typically moving, driving and functioning and return to normal life activities more quickly since the affects are limited to the surgical area, the rest of your body & mind remain unaffected and have normal function.

While it does add about $350.00 to the cost of your surgery, the feedback we receive from our patients is that use of the pain pump provided them with a much smoother and quicker recovery than they had originally anticipated.
