Best Season for Your Cosmetic Surgery Procedure

Wednesday, December 7th, 2016

Are you considering a facelift, tummy tuck, or another plastic surgery procedure? Many of Dr. G.D. Castillo’s patients in both his Champaign and Bloomington cosmetic surgery practices will often ask if there is a better time of the year is to have the particular surgery they are considering. Truthfully, most surgeries can be performed anytime of the year but each season does lend itself to certain advantages. Hopefully this blog post will give you some points to consider when choosing the best time for you and your lifestyle.

FALL:

Fall is known to be a time for change. The leaves change, colors change, temperatures change, daylight hours change, so why not make some changes of your own?

There are many advantages to having surgery during this time of year. The kids are back in school. Busy summer schedules and beach days have come to an end (at least here in the Midwest) and life is starting to get back into a more consistent routine after summer. The holidays are coming up and with a little planning you can have surgery and be healed with no remaining telltale signs all before your first holiday get-together.

lipo jeans to bigThere are also a few long holiday weekends like Columbus Day and Thanksgiving. This is a good time to have body contouring with liposculpture or even neck liposcultpure. Breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, and even mini-facelift procedures are possibilities over long weekends. It is usually cool enough to camouflage yourself with an over-sized shirts, turtlenecks or scarves.

The only real disadvantage to having plastic surgery this time of year is that you are heading into the holiday season. It you have a lot of pre-holiday prep work or demands, it might be more challenging.

WINTER:

Winter is typically a very popular time to have surgery and for good reason; it is generally a slower, more laid back time. You can extend time off from work by adding vacation days to the beginning or end of holiday time. For this reason, it’s an ideal time to have surgeries that take more than a long weekend to be presentable, like a facelift, forehead lift, eyelid surgery, fat transplant or rhinoplasty.

It is easier to hide out for a few days without friends and family getting suspicious of your absence. It’s a common time to be stuck at home with “the flu or a cold” for a few days. Since no one wants your flu or a cold, they are likely to stay away. 😉

Winter wardrobes make it easy to conceal post-surgical swelling and bruising of the face or body. Scarves, turtlenecks and cute winter hats make it easy to hide lady covered with scarfthe signs of a recent facelift or forehead lift. Big, comfy sweaters can hide slower movements that are necessary just after breast surgeries, tummy tucks, and body contouring. Since you will need to avoid sun exposure after surgeries like laser resurfacing, winter is also the easiest time to stay out of the sun.

I cannot really think of any disadvantages of having surgery in the winter, though winter sometimes creates procrastination and before you know it, it’s spring and you’re suddenly in a time crunch to meet your cosmetic goals.

SPRING:

Spring is probably the most motivating season. It’s a very popular season for 4562 smallscheduling liposuction, tummy tucks, breast surgery and mommy makeovers. Patients are looking ahead to late spring and summer and want to get their body in check before heading to the beach, going to class reunions, weddings, vacations, or just having less clothing to conceal their areas of concern. It is also a great time for those who couldn’t fit a facelift, brow lift, rhinoplasty into their winter schedule because you can still conceal with a big spring hat, scarf and sunglasses for the first few days if you have bruising or swelling to cover.

SUMMER:

Summer can be a more challenging time to have certain cosmetic surgery procedures, as it is more difficult to avoid sun exposure to lasered skin or new, exposed incisions. If you are a gardener, a golfer or work outside, summer may not be the best season to have laser surgery. Most surgeries will impinge on your summer activities, at least to some extent.

However, if your daily summer lifestyle doesn’t include spending lots of time summer-cute-hipster-beautyoutside and you are accustomed to protecting your skin from the sun depending on your lifestyle, if you’re someone who already restricts the amount of sun exposure you get, or if you are willing restrict the time you spend outside for awhile, it can be a good option.

If you have kids at home, summer is a good time to send them off to Grandma’s house or summer camp for a fun-filled week while you concentrate on your recovery. By the time they return, they will be none-the-wiser. Since most people are pretty busy during the summer months, it won’t be too suspicious if you disappear from your social scene for a week.

Procedures like breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, eyelid surgery and tummy tuck procedures are good summer surgery choices. If summer is not a good time for surgery but you want a more youthful look for all your summer events, consider BOTOX Cosmetic or dermal filler treatments, or facials and skincare to keep yourself looking fresh until fall.

I think James Taylor said it best when he sang “Winter, spring, summer, or fall…all you’ve got to do is call…”

LOVE YOUR BODY NOW

LOVE YOUR BODY!

Body bulges can create such a frustration, even for most dedicated gym rats. While body bulges may appear as a result of too much eating mixed with too little exercise, it’s not the only reason for fatty bulges. Sometimes, it is simply the body you were born with. Some bodies, even when at a “normal” weight, with good diet and exercise habits, do not change easily and being disproportionate can be a constant struggle, affecting ones self-image.

I have performed thousands of liposuction /  liposculpture procedures in my Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center in Champaign, through out my career as 4523a Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon. I have seen countless cases of men and women who struggle with bulges whether they are over weight or under weight. If you where born as an apple or pear shape and you fight constantly to maintain or obtain the body shape you want; if fat bulges of the hips, knees, buttock, or thighs etc. are related to lack of proportion, there is a successful, predictable solution at hand.

CPS Blog Photo Nude body5007Traditional liposcultpure is the best solution for contouring your body into a shape that is pleasing to you, leaving you looking and feeling fabulous in any outfit! Suctioning a significant amount fat cells from the appropriate areas can have a magical effect, creating slender, graceful and vivacious female contour or a lean, fit and muscular male form. It is safely performed under general anesthesia in my Joint Commission accredited out-patient surgical facility, with a four day recovery.

There are so many terms used to describe options of fat removal today that it is sometimes difficult to keep them all straight.   Media loves to romanticize new fad techiques like Cool Sculpting or Smart Lipo for example so don’t let them woo you! Just because they are new, does not mean they provide the best or safest long-term solution void of issues.

I believe that traditional liposculpture offers my patients best results. It is a modern and proven technique that in the hands of an experienced, board-certified cosmetic surgeon offers long-term, predictable, smooth results with thousands of ecstatic patients who now love their body

Middle-Age Muffin Tops

Monday, February 23rd, 2015

Middle-age for most of us brings about change in one way or another. It typically shows up on your doorstep with an under-handed series of hits to the ego that completely blind-side you.   Suddenly, you find yourself in the “it’s time for your colonoscopy” category, which let’s face it, I’ve yet to meet another human who is excited about that promotion.  You trade in sinusitis for arthritis, begin to complain about lack of wholesome television programming today.  You find yourself searching for the nearest teenager to explain this modern social technology, wondering “why anyone with any good sense would waste their time with Tweeter, Snaptrist and the rest of them. Doesn’t anyone protect their privacy anymore?”

Along with these delightful changes, middle-age often brings about some physical changes too.  It’s like you wake up one morning to find that your abs of steel or lady curves have been replaced with a bulging, muffin top. There are several factors that contribute to the development of the muffin top that moves in and obliterates what was once an hour-glass waistline or fit male physique.

  • Heredity
  • Hormonal changes (that topic deserves it’s own blog post, maybe two or three!)
  • Lifestyle or life choices.

Many of Dr. Castillo’s patients arrive for consultation at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center in Champaign or Bloomington, asking if liposuction can help reduce their “middle-age muffin tops.”  Liposuction, also called liposculpture, is often the solution to many muffin top issues without the need for more extensive surgery such as a tummy tuck.  (For more information about choosing between the two procedures, read this blog post.) However, in most cases, it is important to understand that removing fat only from the abdomen and ignoring the bulk of the surrounding torso will not give you the results you envision.

Excess fatty tissue in the abdominal area is most often accompanied by excess fatty tissue (even if at a lesser degree) of the hips (love handles), back, waist and sometimes the lateral thighs.  As Dr. Castillo once told me, “During liposuction, it’s not the fat you take that counts, it’s what you leave behind.” I think that principle applies here.  In order to sculpt out the sensuous, proportionate curves of an hour-glass shape, you must also address any bulk of the hips, back and waist that exist. For our male patients, the same applies.  It is difficult to create the fit, well-proportioned contour of a male physique when excess fatty tissue in surrounding areas is left untreated.

Patients who choose liposuction or liposculpture to restore and define a slim waist of youth often report not only being happy with their new body shape but find that it is a great source of motivation to lead a healthier lifestyle with better exercise and diet choices, increasing their overall quality of life.

Spot Reduction by Liposuction

Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

G.D. Castillo, M.D.  has been sculpting bodies into a more proportionate form in his Cosmetic Plastic Surgery practice since 1983, through liposuction or liposculpture.  While maintaining a good diet and a realistic exercise routine is vital to looking good and maintaining a healthy body, there is no such thing as “spot reduction” thru diet or exercise.  This fact often causes an otherwise reasonable active individual to struggle with their body image and their inability to self-correct those problem areas.  Often patient’s maintain abnormally low weight in attempt to reduce their body bulges.  When that doesn’t work, it is often interpreted as a failure and many find it difficult to remain dedicated to their exercise routine and healthy eating habits.

Liposculpture or Liposuction is used to reduce volume and re-contour specific areas of the body by suctioning out the fat that over-collects in certain areas, disrupting the inherent, sensuous flow of the human body.   Through the use of Liposculpture, Dr. Castillo is able create a feminine contour from the hips to the buttock that would boost any women’s confidence. He is able to create a smooth, naturally flowing contour of the body that restores self-pride for both our male and female our patients.

After liposuction, patient’s often become re-invested in making healthy food choices and staying consistent in their exercise program because liposuction has given them the encouragement they needed to continue on a path of healthy living.  After reducing the problem areas, patients can finally see that their hard work truly is paying off every time they look in the mirror.

While liposuction is often used for volume reduction, the best candidates for liposuction are those who are reasonable fit but have some problem areas though it can also be used for volume reduction.  Liposuction can be used to “spot reduce” nearly any area of the body.  It can also be used in conjunction with other cosmetic plastic surgery procedures to enhance the results.  For instance, it can be used during a facelift for a patient who carries extra weight in his or her face, or to reduce a double chin or jowls during a mini-facelift.  In some cases liposuction is used in combination with an abdominoplasty or tummy tuck. It can be used to reduce arm fat during a Brachioplasty or arm lift.

Imagine being a woman who feels compelled to wear long skirts or pants in the heat of summer because she is too embarrassed to expose her thighs. Imagine the frustration that comes with realizing that no matter how thin and fit you are your thighs or hips will always be larger or disproportionate to the rest of your body.  Consider how frustrating it must be for a male who eats consciously and exercises but cannot decrease the bulk of his breasts or his love handles through those means. For patients like these, Liposuction or Liposculpture can make a tremendous improvement in their quality of life.

Dr. Castillo is compassionate toward the struggles that individuals go through, and he is passionate about helping them reach their goals. As the Past-President of The American Society of Liposuction Surgery and the Past-President of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Castillo continues to be an influential leader in liposuction surgery.   If you would like more information on Liposuction or Liposculpture, call Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Clinic in Savoy (Champaign – Urbana area) at 217-359-7508 or Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Clinic in Bloomington at 309-662-0436 to schedule your consultation with G.D. Ask Our Expert: Liposuction Vs. Liposculpture

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

Q: What is the difference between liposuction and liposculpture?

A: Though both of these cosmetic surgeries are used for body contouring. Liposuction is a two dimensional cosmetic surgery, while liposculpture is a three dimensional cosmetic surgery. Liposuction and liposculpture can be used to contour any body shape, though we use it primarily for body contouring in individuals who are reasonably fit but have some problem areas.  Removal of fat in specific areas such as the love-handles, waist, thighs, back or arms allows the patient to feel more proportionate and confident in and out of their clothing.

Liposuction can also be used as a volume reduction tool.  We are able to remove up to two gallons of fat during this procedure.  The results of this procedure create an over-all slimmer, more proportionate body shape in an otherwise full-figured individual.

Topic: Liposculpture / Liposuction

Q: Why does Dr. Castillo still recommend liposculpture over newer treatments like Smart Lipo?

A: At Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Clinic, Dr. Castillo investigated newer fat reduction treatments Smart Lipo, Ultrasonic Lipo and others you may have read about.  The simple truth is that we want the very best outcome for our patients.  We have chosen to stay with traditional tumescent liposculpture because it’s the only one that can be used for contouring in 3600, also known as tri-dimensional body sculpting.  Traditional liposculpture offers consistent, predictable, superior results.  Today there is simply no substitute for tumescent liposculpture for accurate results, speedy recovery, lack complications, and it is affordable.

Sometimes newer trends are not as effective.  They are just well marketed.  At this time, the newer fat reduction procedures DO NOT offer ANY advantages to our patients.  They only decrease safety and increase cost, two things we are not willing to compromise on just to keep up with the latest marketing fad.

Liposuction Vs. Abdominoplasty

Friday, July 29th, 2011

LIPOSUCTION   VS.   ABDOMINOPLASTY

People and physicians alike have difficulty deciding if liposuction or abdominoplasty is the best procedure when both fat and excess skin coexist.  Generally speaking, liposuction is best when we need to remove a fair amount of fatty tissue from areas where it has accumulated over time.  This would be the upper and lower abdomen, waist area, hips, upper buttocks, etc.   On the other hand, abdominoplasty is used typically when we have an apron in the lower portion of the abdomen and/or loose skin without a lot of fatty tissue in the abdominal area, whether it’s above or below the umbilicus.  Abdominoplasty is most frequently needed after pregnancy where the white tissue that covers muscles (fascia) has stretched out and relaxed.  This allows the abdomen to bulge and so the chief complaint is that of an abdominal “pooch” or loose skin, whether it is an abdominal apron or relaxed wrinkled skin over the abdominal area.

The difficult decision, however, comes when we have someone who has both loose abdominal fascia, wrinkled skin and also an excess accumulation of fatty tissue in the hips, upper buttocks, waist, upper back, and upper and lower abdomen.  In these instances, many times both of the procedures are necessary; HOWEVER, they cannot be carried out during the same surgical setting since extensive liposuction would create injury to the blood vessels that are necessary to keep the abdominal flap (that is, the anterior skin covering the abdomen that is going to be stretched from the umbilicus to the pubic area) in good nourishment.  In such an instance, the best solution is to carry out an abdominoplasty or liposuction first as a staged procedure and later coming back and doing secondarily whatever is necessary.  While this is in many instances the best avenue, it is also costlier and for this reason we tend to avoid it.  Typically, if this is necessary, it would best to carryout the liposuction first since in some instances liposuction will tend to solve both problems.

In our consultations for liposuction and abdominoplasty in Champaign-Urbana or Bloomington-Normal area offices, we do a very complete evaluation of the best procedure on an individual basis, keeping in mind that while to solve most problems both procedures would be necessary, in many instances proper evaluation will yield a good result with only one procedure as long as the right one is used to solve the primary problem, whether it be excess tissue or excess fat.
