Real or Fake… You Decide

Monday, July 6th, 2009
We know that for decades long, full lashes have been a sign of higher beauty. So what makes those who tout lengthy, charming lashes leave a lasting imprint on the minds of so many? Think about it. If you were asked to name some of Hollywood’s leading ladies from the past, who would come to mind…Doris Day, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe. What do you remember about their beauty? It’s their eyes right? These American Beauties were seen all around, flaunting their graceful yet alluring lashes on the silver screen, in photos and magazines. It made them appear mysterious, desirable, and memorable.  What woman doesn’t want that? Sign me up!
Many would say that among other cosmetic enhancements, eyelash enhancement was born in Hollywood.   However, I think we can date it back a bit further than Hollywood. In the first century, Egyptians rubbed kohl on their lashes to draw attention to their eyes.
Beauty legend says that in 1916, D.W. Griffith, an American movie director created the first pair of false eyelashes. His desire was for his leading lady to have eyelashes that were so long that they would gently lay upon her cheeks as she blinked or looked down in thought.
Over the past few years, there has been a vast increase in the number of us “non-celebrities” who are now touting a set of false eyelashes on a daily basis. These days everyone wants to leave an impression.
Unfortunately, wearing false eyelashes is often easier said than done and expensive too. It can be a minimum of $30.00 per week with higher end lash extensions in upwards of $300.00 per application. The glue can leave your skin irritated, itchy and it can break down the skin over time. The trauma of wearing false eyelashes often results in a loss of your real lashes. It is time consuming as they typically have to be replaced every 1-2 weeks. By the time we care properly for our skin, apply our make-up, shave our legs, keep up with the latest hair trend, who has time to add another beauty step to their schedule?  Imagine speaking to a group of people, or sitting across an intimate table for two and one of your false lashes falls to the floor.  What now? I think buying “fake” may be a purchase better suited for your “Prada”.
That is where the genius discovery of Latisse comes in. Why walk around batting those false lashes when you can have the real thing?
