Ask Our Expert – Will My Nose Get Smaller?

Tuesday, June 17th, 2014

Question:  I had Rhinoplasty two weeks ago.  Will my nose get smaller over time?

Answer: Dear reader, I would first encourage you to speak with your plastic surgeon regarding your concerns as he will be able to best answer your questions as your surgeon.  However, in general, two weeks is definitely too short of a time period to make any kind of decisions as to what the final outcome will be from your nose surgery.  Six to Eight weeks after surgery, you will be better able to evaluate the nasal dorsum. Ittakes time for swelling to settle down and for the nose to take its shape.

Rest assured that your nose will continue to change for up to one year post-surgery.

G.D. Castillo, M.D., Expert in Rhinoplasty Surgery

Q: Which surgical procedure does Dr. Castillo most like to perform?

A: Before beginning to write this piece, I consulted with Dr. Castillo.  Of course, working closely with him, I already knew the answer.  Rhinoplasty (cosmetic nose surgery; nose job) definitely gives Dr. Castillo the most personal satisfaction.  Judging from the beaming smiles on the faces of our patients following rhinoplasty, I would have to say it is one of our patient’s most rewarding surgeries as well.

It has been said that there are only two kinds of rhinoplasties; the difficult ones and the very difficult ones. Imagine the challenge of working with instruments in a tiny surgical space with little room for maneuvering, adjusting the nasal structure by just millimeters as your view is obstructed by blood, all the while knowing that you only have one chance to “get it right.” And get it right, he does!

I have had the pleasure of working for Dr. Castillo for several years now.  Watching the changes in both the patient’s appearance and their emotional outlook after rhinoplasty is a remarkable process to witness.  I still find myself anticipating each post-op visit of our rhinoplasty patients. It is truly amazing to see how even a minor adjustment of a hump or the refining of a tip can change a face from appearing unfriendly or closed off to the world to appearing warm and welcoming. Suddenly, that is face of someone you want to get to know.

Because Dr. Castillo is so gifted in knowing exactly what shape the nose needs to be to highlight the rest of the facial contours, the end result is that the patient’s nose looks so natural, it’s as if they were born with it. In fact, it becomes difficult to imagine the patient with his or her pre-surgical nasal shape.

This procedure allows him to use his true artistic skill.  A good surgeon always creates a nose that compliments the beauty and contour of the face, avoiding crafting the same ole’ cookie cutter nose on every face that comes through the office as many surgeons do.  This means that each nasal surgery is different than the last.  Rhinoplasty is most challenging of cosmetic procedures and is  by far the true measure of a surgeon’s skill.
