PREPARING FOR YOUR RHINOPLASTY

Wednesday, July 18th, 2018

Congratulations! You have just made a decision that is going to change the way you see yourself! Now that you have decided to move forward with nasal surgery, there are a few things to consider.

To Tell or Not To Tell…

  • One of the biggest concerns patients typically have is what to tell their family and friends. You are not obligated to tell anyone anything, unless you want to. It is a very personal choice and one only you can make. I will stress however, the idea that it is a VERY rare occasion when a patient tells us that someone was even suspicious that they had a Rhinoplasty. I know it’s hard to imagine that you could have a surgery that creates such a wonderful facial balance and your closest friends won’t notice, but it’s true! I have heard it over and over again from patients that while they receive so many “wow, you look great!” comments, no one suspects a rhinoplasty, just a new hair cut or color, weight loss, a refreshing vacation or better sleep. Since Dr. Castillo performs a closed Rhinoplasty for nearly all his patients, there are no outside incisions which makes it very difficult for anyone to determine that you have had a Rhinoplasty.

Personal Arrangements To Consider:

  • You will need to make arrangements for a family member or friend to drive you home after your surgery.
  • Make arrangements for a responsible adult to stay with you for the first 24 hours after surgery.
  • If you have children or pets, you will need someone to help care for them for the first few days. It is best to avoid any situation where pets or small children could bump into your nose unexpectedly and cause displacement.
  • Because many of our patients travel a distance to see us, Dr. Castillo has made special arrangements with a local hotel favorite; The I-Hotel in Champaign, IL to offer our patients a discounted “CASTILLO STAYCATION” package. This special package includes transportation from our office to the hotel the day of surgery, dinner and breakfast for two, and your hotel accommodations. Our staff will be happy to assist in those arrangements.

 10 Days Before Surgery:

Discontinue all NSAIDS (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) along with the supplements listed below as they are all blood thinners:

  • Aspirin      •Ibuprophen      •Motrin       •Advil       •Aleve     •Fish Oil       •Vitamin E

If you are unsure if a medication or vitamin supplements contains any of these ingredients, please call our office or your pharmacist for clarification.

  • SMOKERS: We suggest that you stop smoking 10-14 days prior to surgery as it can reduce your chances of complications.

Your Pre-Op Visit:

You will be scheduled for a pre-operative visit about 7-10 days prior to your surgery. During this appointment, Dr. Castillo will review your surgical plan and expectations for recovery. You will have an opportunity to ask any final questions of Dr. Castillo. He will listen you’re your heart and lungs, draw lab work, and take your before photos. You may also be given a prescription for pain at this time though most of your patients just use OTC Tylenol as there is typically very little discomfort associated with a Rhinoplasty.
