We've not yet discovered the fountain of youth, but you can think of BOTOX facial rejuvenation therapy as taking a small dip in that fountain. BOTOX Cosmetic is a very safe, purified protein derived from the Clostridium Botulinum bacterium, which was first identified as a toxin in 1895. Botulinum toxin was then purified in the 1940's and produced in a fairly stable form.
In the 1970's, it was discovered that Botulinum causes the removal of the facial lines of animation (the dynamic lines or wrinkles that appear around the eyelids, frown area and forehead when smiling or gesturing). That discovery has lead to the use of Botulinum in recent decades for the management of lines of facial expression. For many years, BOTOX has been America's most popular cosmetic treatment.
The Treatment
During this brief, in-office treatment, Botulinum is injected into the muscles causing facial wrinkles. This causes a temporary reduction in the motor activity of the muscle and weakness of the muscle that result in loss of wrinkling in the crow's feet area, frown lines, forehead and other facial areas. Many patients compare the sensation of the injections to a bug bite, with very little discomfort. Dr. Castillo utilizes a very specialized technique to actually raise the eye brows. This opens up the eyes and gives that well rested, alert look many of our patient's desire.
After Treatment
Once injected, BOTOX begins to block nerve impulses to the facial muscles, relaxing these over-active muscles. Results are not immediate, but patients should expect to see their skin gradually begin to smooth out in treated areas within one to three days following treatment.
The results of using BOTOX for facial expression have been fairly spectacular. We have found a tremendous increase in the demand for this treatment in our practice, both as a single treatment and in combination with other procedures like dermabrasion, dermal fillers and even a surgical facelift in Champaign.
