The Procedure
The goal of reduction mammoplasty is to reduce, re-contour and reshape the breasts. The breasts are made smaller, the nipple / areola is repositioned upward and the excess skin is removed. Dr. Castillo will attempt to make the breasts as identical as possible but patients should keep in mind that often some asymmetry remains. There are usually three incisions: one incision around the nipple, a vertical incision from the nipple to beneath the breast that remains visible for some time and an incision in the breast fold. Scarring will fade over time, and patients can choose to have IPL treatments to improve the appearance of post-surgical incisions.
Through the incisions, Dr. Castillo removes fat and glandular tissue and trims excess skin before repositioning the nipple to a higher place on the breast. In most cases, the nipple remains attached to the underlying vessels and nerves, so sensation can be preserved.
