For many women there is a direct link between the size and shape of their breast and how well they are able to express their feminine or sensual side. This 35-year old from Kankakee, Illinois, was seen in consultation with a main complaint of breast droopiness and loss of volume in her breast. She stated that after the births of her children, she began to feel embarrassed when exposing her breasts during intimate moments with her husband.
After two pregnancies and breastfeeding two babies, she noticed increasing droopiness and loss of volume of both breasts, which created significant concern and forced changes in her lifestyle. She found that the droopiness of her breasts limited the types of clothing she was able to wear. She was concerned that her waist appears shorter now that her breasts sag to a lower level. This made her feel additionally self-conscious as she appeared heavier in much of the clothes she wore. She was forced to wear very supportive garments that were uncomfortable and often rubbed her skin creating pain. She also expressed concern with the size and irregular shape of her areolas. She desired smaller, spherical areolas much like she had as a young women.
In consultation, she was found to have very noticeable flattening of both breasts with nipple areolar complexes pointing downward in both breasts. In her case, we could not just do a breast augmentation because as you can see in her before photos, her nipple areolar complex was below the level of her breast fold. Therefore, it was necessary to combine her breast augmentation with a breast lift to get her desired result. We discussed her options, and mutually agreed to proceed with a surgical plan of a breast lift (mastopexy) and bilateral augmentation with saline prostheses.
The day of surgery, the patient arrived at our fully-accredited outpatient surgical facility in Champaign / Urbana for breast augmentation and mastopexy (breast lift). Smooth saline prostheses were placed on both breasts and filled to 390cc. This increase took her from a size B to a small D. Six days post-surgery, her sutures were removed and the incisions were taped for several weeks to promote better healing.
The patient was pleasantly surprised that her recovery was faster than she’d imagined. She stated that one of reasons she put off having the surgery was because she wasn’t sure how her family would operate without her for a few days. She was able to return to the care of her children within 3 days of the surgical procedure. Recovery went so smoothly that she wishes she would have had surgery a few years ago, avoiding the emotional distress that feeling so self-conscious caused her. She is now able to wear any clothing she chooses and her husband is very pleased that she feels comfortable with her body once more.
Her post-operative photographs taken 3 months after surgery show a well-healed incision on both breasts. She presents with a very slight pigmentation in the vertical incision below the nipple. This pigmentation will begin to fade as it is temporary. Both breasts are full with normal position of nipple areolar complexes and complete correction of the flattening of the breast. The tubular shape of both breasts seen in the pre-operative photographs has been completely corrected.
She has been able to resume the activities that she shied away from prior to surgery. She is very impressed with how well the incisions have healed, and is very happy to have had both procedures carried out in a single trip to the operating room.
