This 20-year old from the Champaign/Urbana area was seen for consultation, accompanied by her mother, with the chief complaint of large, asymmetric breasts. She is a very busy and physically active student, measuring 5’8” and 155-pounds. She has experienced problems with large breasts since the age of 14 and has been consistently troubled by an asymmetry of her breasts with the right breast being significantly larger than the left one. She found it difficult to camouflage both the size of her breasts and the size difference between the right and left sides.

We discussed the different approaches to breast reduction and discussed in detail the ability to reduce breasts by liposuction, particularly in younger individuals who have not had their family yet and have aspirations of breast-feeding. A breast reduction by liposuction has much better chances of resulting in the ability to breast feed normally, as well as the obvious benefits of not having any scars following the surgery. This will also result in a much easier surgical procedure and a shorter recovery for the patient as well.

After carefully considering her options, she decided to undergo breast reduction by liposuction. Breast reduction by liposuction in Champaign, Illinois was carried out in our fully accredited outpatient surgical facility. During a 1-1/2 hour surgical procedure, 525cc of fat was removed out of the right breast and 300cc was removed out of the left breast.

She was pleased to have a very easy recovery with minimal discomfort and only moderate swelling in both breasts. She wore a support garment for one week, and then went on to use normal bras. Although she decreased her level of activities for the first week, she was able to carry on with normal light activities uninterrupted after surgery. Over a period of several weeks she noticed a significant decrease in volume for both breasts, and was also pleased to find both breasts to be of equal size, although of different shape.

She was re-examined at four months and her estimated pre-operative volume of 900-1,000 grams on the right breast and 700-800 grams on the left breast had been uniformly reduced to approximately 500 grams for both the right and left breasts. Both breasts are even and equal, the nipple areolar complexes have moved up and there is no change in the shape of the breast in so far as droopiness. The surgical procedure has not only reduced and equalized the size of the breasts, but it has also improved the shape and position of both breasts. There remains a difference in the shape of the breasts that can only be corrected by changing the shape of the skin, which would require incisions.

Breast reduction by liposuction is a very powerful alternative in a young patient with or without asymmetric breasts, who is wishing to reduce the breast size while preserving and/or improving the shape without incisions.
